Situated close to the pretty villages of Barr and Pinwherry in the heart of the Stinchar Valley in South Ayrshire, Barr (5.5 miles) has a well regarded primary school, shop and a village pub, and is about 6 miles north from the seaside town of Girvan offering a wide range of shops and services including a new community hospital. (6 miles) also has a new primary school. There is secondary schooling in Girvan whilst the nearest private school is in Ayr (about 28 miles). Ayr has an excellent range of shops, supermarkets, leisure and sports facilities, cinema and art galleries. The railway station in Girvan provides regular services to Glasgow and . Glasgow is within easy reach via the newly improved A77 and M77 and Glasgow Airport (31 miles) offers regular international flights. There is a regular ferry service from Stranraer (about 23 miles) to Ireland.

Nestled in the Stinchar Valley, the area is a popular destination for those seeking outdoor pursuits. There are a number of excellent designated walking routes in the area and some excellent cycle paths including the nearby Changue Forest (6 miles) with a network of nearly 20 miles of paths and tracks available, being one of the may designated cycling routes in the area. The is a famous salmon fishery and is renowned for its autumn run. DESCRIPTION Situated about 150m above sea level, High Aldons is believed to have been originally constructed around 1714 and was purchased by the current owners in 1968. The cottage has been renovated and extended to provide a comfortable 6 bedroom family home, enjoying a fabulous location overlooking the beautiful Stinchar Valley.

High Aldons is situated on the Aldons Hill SSSI (Site of Special Scientific Interest) part of the Grasslands unusual in Europe because of the species-rich grassland with abundant wildflowers and rare plants, which is linked to the unusual underlying geology including rocks like serpentinite, once part of the earth’s crust 500 million years ago.

The setting of this cottage is particularly special, enjoying spectacular views with beautiful mature garden grounds in a very private setting.

ACCOMMODATION The front door opens to the hall with slate flooring. The cosy sitting room with large ceiling beam has two woodburning stoves – a Jetmaster in-set stove with stone fireplace, brass plate and wood mantel and a cast iron Jotul stove with stone hearth and wood mantel. A glass door leads to the hall with study area and the south facing conservatory with slate flooring and French doors leads to the delightful gardens.

The large central kitchen/dining room with slate flooring and dual aspect windows has a traditional 4-oven Aga with simmering and baking ovens, warming plate and hot plate, a large Belfast sink with tiled splashback, shelved area for storage and a wood burning stove with brass plate and painted surround. From the kitchen, the hall has maple flooring and a staircase leading to bedrooms 3 and 4. The bathroom has freestanding clawfoot bath, fireplace with pine surround and half height wood panelling with w.c. and sink. There are two bedrooms on the ground floor, both with fireplaces and a store/larder with plumbing for washing machine.

On the first floor, there are two sets of stairs each providing two bedrooms and a cloakroom w.c.

Accessed from outside, there is a cellar which would be suitable for a home office or workshop. OUTSIDE To the rear is a peaceful, private and enclosed garden bounded by a stone wall with a gravelled patio seating area, lawn and borders stocked with mature shrubs and colourful flowers.

The front of the house is sheltered by a stone wall and fencing, with a fuchsia making a very attractive hedge, there are colourful hydrangeas, buddleia, rose bushes and a Eucalyptus tree amongst other colourful shrubs and bushes. Several raised beds provide fruit and vegetables throughout spring and summer, and fruit trees including cherry, apple, elderberry, damson and Victorian plum.

DIRECTIONS From Ayr head south on the A77 passing through and Turnberry making for Girvan. Continue through Girvan and take the A714 from Girvan signed for Newton Stewart. Continue along this road for about 6 miles passing the B734 sign for Barr, after a couple of hundred yards turn right next to the small church, passing the cottage on the left hand side and under the bridge to the forest crossing. Proceed straight on up the gravelled road to High Aldon.

Please note that a four-wheel drive vehicle is recommended for access up this road.
