CHELMONDISTON HORTICULTURE SOCIETY I hope everyone is well and still coping with the lockdown. It’s a while since we have met and we don’t have anything on the cards for the near future as we may not be able to use the village hall until late June. There is also the problem of a lack of officers to run the society. We need a secretary, a chair and a treasurer. The accounts have been finalised and audited and unless we find new officers, we will give formal notice to wind up. Therefore, it is up to the members as to whether we can carry on or not. SHOTLEY ROSE BOWLS CLUB Firstly, all club members send their best wishes to the whole community and hope you have all stayed safe and well. There has been no bowls activity in the last year but we are grateful to our groundsman and his assistant for maintaining the green which might have benefited from a year’s rest. However, with the latest government announcements, it does appear that outdoor grassroots sport can begin again after Monday 25 March. We will have to see if there are any changes to this timescale over the next week or so. Therefore, the plan is to start preparing the clubhouse and green for the first few rollups. The committee will implement Covid-19 precautions for all players and visitors but, as the sport is outdoors, all should be relatively safe. The county committees have met and a full programme of matches have been made in both the Samford League, played on Monday evenings, and the Triple League, played on Wednesday evenings. Time will tell if these fixtures can take place but there is a real hope some of them will. We do hope as many of our past members as possible will be able to return to the club this summer. This is also a great opportunity for other residents of Shotley and the surrounding district to join in a pleasurable and safe activity out in the open and make new friends and contacts. Please come along in groups or individually, you will be very welcome. As Bowls have said: “Our overriding objective is for as many bowlers as possible to enjoy our sport safely this summer. Bowls is a naturally socially distanced, non-contact activity and plays a key role in the mental and physical health of many across the country. The positive prospects for the new season provide a great boost to bowlers and sport in general.” If you have never tried bowls, do get in touch and have a go. It could be a sport you might like to try until your normal sporting activity starts up again. It will get you up and out and joining in friendly social banter where we can all share our stories of the last year. Do give us a call. HOLBROOK BOWLS CLUB A welcoming and friendly club situated at the end of the community car park. Unfortunately, last year’s league games were cancelled due to Covid-19. However, in line with current guidance from the government and Bowls England, fixture lists for this season (2021) have been circulated by Suffolk County Bowls Association, with league games currently scheduled to begin at the end of April. In addition to league games on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday evenings, the intention is that our green will also be open to members and newcomers with taster sessions organised accordingly. If you are interested in taking up a new hobby or want to discuss a possible taster session, please feel free to contact one of the following. Club Captain Peter Abbott: 01473 780525 Chairman Derek Harper: 01473 327505 Secretary Martin Pink: 07809 222057 All sessions will be conducted in line with guidance from Bowls England and sanitisation products and Covid-19 guidance will be provided to all interested parties. We look forward hopefully to meeting and sharing our wonderful facility with members of the community irrespective of their age.
