  • About Pigs [PDF]
May 2015 About Pigs Pigs are highly intelligent, social animals, displaying elaborate maternal, communicative, and affiliative behavior. Wild and feral pigs inhabit wide tracts of the southern and mid-western United States, where they thrive in a variety of habitats. They form matriarchal social groups, sleep in communal nests, and maintain close family bonds into adulthood. Science has helped shed light on the depths of the remarkable cognitive abilities of pigs, and fosters a greater appreciation for these often maligned and misunderstood animals. Background Pigs—also called swine or hogs—belong to the Suidae family1 and along with cattle, sheep, goats, camels, deer, giraffes, and hippopotamuses, are part of the order Artiodactyla, or even-toed ungulates.2 Domesticated pigs are descendants of the wild boar (Sus scrofa),3,4 which originally ranged through North Africa, Asia and Europe.5 Pigs were first domesticated approximately 9,000 years ago.6 The wild boar became extinct in Britain in the 17th century as a result of hunting and habitat destruction, but they have since been reintroduced.7,8 Feral pigs (domesticated animals who have returned to a wild state) are now found worldwide in temperate and tropical regions such as Australia, New Zealand, and Indonesia and on island nations, 9 such as Hawaii.10 True wild pigs are not native to the New World.11 When Christopher Columbus landed in Cuba in 1493, he brought the first domestic pigs—pigs who subsequently spread throughout the Spanish West Indies (Caribbean).12 In 1539, Spanish explorers brought pigs to the mainland when they settled in Florida.

  • The Global Impact of Wild Pigs (Sus Scrofa) on Terrestrial Biodiversity Derek R
www.nature.com/scientificreports OPEN The global impact of wild pigs (Sus scrofa) on terrestrial biodiversity Derek R. Risch1*, Jeremy Ringma1,2 & Melissa R. Price1 The International Union for the Conservation of Nature’s (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species is a comprehensive database of over 120,000 species and is a powerful tool to evaluate the threat of invasive species to global biodiversity. Several problematic species have gained global recognition due to comprehensive threat assessments quantifying the threat these species pose to biodiversity using large datasets like the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. However, the global threat of wild pigs (Sus scrofa) to biodiversity is still poorly understood despite well-documented ecosystem level impacts. In this study, we utilized the IUCN Red List to quantify the impacts of this globally distributed species throughout its native and non-native range. Here we show that wild pigs threaten 672 taxa in 54 diferent countries across the globe. Most of these taxa are listed as critically endangered or endangered and 14 species have been driven to extinction as a direct result of impacts from wild pigs. Our results show that threats from wild pigs are pervasive across taxonomic groups and that island endemics and taxa throughout the non-native range of wild pigs are particularly vulnerable. Global biodiversity is decreasing at an alarming rate with species extinction rates 1000 times greater than natu- ral background rates and anticipated to be 10,000 times greater in the future 1. Te establishment and spread of invasive species are among the primary drivers of these losses as they directly afect native species and can infuence ecosystem change through disturbance 2–4.

It's interesting with good pictures, and my daughter enjoys the idea of sounding like more than one person. The author definitely knows family dynamics for instance, all of the kids going to the bathroom as soon as they get thereand he's good Olivia Forms a Band writing it in an amusing way. Olivia wants to be Olivia Forms a Band one-girl band for the fireworks show she is attending with her family. She gathers up all sorts of instruments, steals her dad's suspenders while he's wearing them! When it comes time to go to the fireworks show, she changes her mind. That night, Olivia dreams of becoming a member of the Supreme Court. Although only Olivia Forms a Band second book in the series, I really think these books are adorable. Great to read for all ages and the illustrations are really well done! This isn't as good as Olivia's other outings, but Falconer can't help but have moments of brilliance in all his books. Here it's when Olivia suggests forming a band on one page and her family uniformly disengages eye contact on the next. Delightful, as always. Olivia is an outspoken rambunctious pig. • Crop Profile for Swine in Virginia
CROP PROFILE FOR SWINE IN VIRGINIA Prepared: March 2008 GENERAL PRODUCTION INFORMATION • Virginia was ranked 18th out of 50 swine-producing states in 2006, down from 17th in 2005. • Most swine in Virginia are raised in the south-central and southeast counties, including Suffolk, Southampton, Surrey, Isle of Wight, Virginia Beach, Buckingham, and Halifax counties. • Over half of the swine in Virginia are produced for Murphy-Brown LLC, the world’s largest hog producer and a division of Smithfield Foods. • There were 365,000 hogs and pigs on 850 farms in Virginia as of December 2006, of which 30,000 were breeding swine, while the remaining 335,000 were destined for the market. Swine totals were 125,000 fewer than the previous year. • The 2006 pig crop totaled 548,000 animals. • Cash receipts totaled $69,680,000 for 2006. The average price per 100 lbs. on a live- weight basis was $42.60. Photo Credit: Ken Hammond, USDA Online Photography Center. CULTURAL PRACTICES The major breeds of swine grown in Virginia are Hampshire, Landrace, Duroc, and Yorkshire (Large White). Other breeds include Berkshire, Spotted, Chester White, Poland China, and Pietrain. However, the majority of pigs reared on commercial hog farms in Virginia and most other states are crossbreeds or composites of the aforementioned breeds. The white breeds (Yorkshire, Landrace, and Chester White) tend to have excellent reproductive traits, including larger litter size, greater milk production, and submissive temperament. White breeds also tend to flourish indoors rather than in pastures. The colored breeds are less susceptible to sunburn, better able to withstand stressful situations, and tend to be more lean and muscled than the whites.
