NOTES:

Pitcher Wins After each game a Win is given to a pitcher (on the winning team) and a Loss is assigned to a pitcher (on the losing team). The win can be assigned to a starting pitcher or a relief pitcher depending on certain circumstances such as how many innings did the starting pitcher pitch before being relieved, was his Team in front or was the score tied when he was relieved, and his Team only won the game after the relief pitcher started to pitch etc. Given our winter seasons fluctuate between 15 and 16 minor round games plus possible finals, and allowing for washed out rounds due to unplayable conditions, and starting possibly being rotated weekly, to win 8 games in a season is a remarkable achievement.

Batting Average Batting averages are worked out for each individual Team player. It is defined as the number of (Safe) hits divided by the number of (At-bats) as determined by a Team’s Scorer. So to achieve a Batting Average of .500 a player would need to hit safely once out of every two At -bats. Ie: If a player has 30 At-bats in a Season which is regarded as the minimum At-bats required to meet the criteria for a Blue or Half-Blue, he would need to obtain 15 Safe Hits to achieve a .500 Batting Average, which is very hard to achieve over a full season. The reason for this is that it is not just a matter of hitting the ball and getting to at least First Base, as it is up to the Scorers to determine whether or not it was a definite safe hit; whether the batter got safe due to an error by an opposition fielder; whether or not the opposition fielder made a normal or above normal effort to field the hit ball.

Competition Award A Competition Award is an award given by the South Australian Winterball Association (SAWBA) which is affiliated to the South Australian Baseball League (SABL).

Club Award All Coaches/Captains of Teams that play for Adelaide University Baseball Club are given sole responsibility for selecting Team Award winners at the end of each winter season and different Coaches/Captains like to award trophies for different criteria ranging from Most Valuable Player based on the player that obtains the most votes per game over the whole season, Best Batting Average, Best Team Fielder based on the player that obtains the most votes per game over the whole season, Most Improved, Best Team Player and Coaches Award. However, each Coach/Captain is limited to nominating for 3 Team Awards only each season.

The Club Committee has also approved the introduction of an annual Club Award called the “Blacks” Award which is awarded to the Club Member whom the Committee deem has done the most each year to ensure the success of the Club. Each Team Coach and the Club President then put forward one name for the Committee to vote on, on a 4,3,2,1, basis and the person with the most votes win’s the award. The inaugural “Blacks” Award was presented by David Penn in 2019.

Winterball Winterball has been run by the South Australian Winter Baseball Association (SAWBA) as a stand- alone competition since 1969 following the South Australian Baseball League’s (SABL) decision to convert from a winter baseball competition after the 1968 Season to a Summer Competition commencing with the first summer Season in 1968-69. The winter competition was continued to allow those people who already played a summer sport to continue to play Baseball in winter. It currently caters for many Clubs who mostly run multiple teams. Teams play over 3 different Divisions - 1, 2 and 3 with Division 2 split into North, Central and South Leagues and Division 3 having a Central League. The competition is quite strong as most teams are made up of a mixture of players who also play summer baseball as well as players who only play in winter.
