Lent, Holy Week and Easter at Norwich Cathedral cathedral.org.uk A special season in the Christian year Picture: Paul Hurst It is remarkable how in our contemporary culture, in which Christianity has lost so much of its wider resonance, the idea of ‘giving something up for Lent’ still has such a wide purchase. This may be because it is seen to fit in so neatly to our obsession with self-improvement: Lent as a personal test of self-control – can I go the limit without alcohol, without meat, without chocolate? These ambitions may be worthwhile, but they have little to do with Lent. The essence of this season is to reconnect ourselves with God’s will for us. At the heart of Christian discipleship, Jesus tells us, is to take up our cross in order that we might faithfully follow him to Calvary and to the tomb, that we might come to share his resurrection life.
