Dear Committee,

Both Joel and I are native Oregonians and know the landscape. We are experienced in exterior and interior large and small scaled murals painted directly on the wall or other substrate, including panels. We have considerable experience on large scale mural projects, the largest being a Terra Mural “Plaza del Sol” measuring 14,000 square feet. We are on the pre-qualified public artist rosters in several states, including through the Oregon Arts Commission (OAC) and the Regional Arts and Culture Council (RACC) whose headquarters is here in Portland.

I liked the rough concept presented in your materials; leaving the steel beams exposed to integrate the work with the architecture. Also, integrating people exercising is appealing.

We would work to capture the spirit of Oregon landscapes, especially those which represent Yamhill County. There is so much to choose from: Yamhill Oaks Preserve that sanctions Fenders’ Blue Butterfly and avails forest lands, oaks and prairie habitats, richness of vineyards in the wine county, Trask Mountain, Amity hills, Miller Woods Conservation Area, Yamhill River Bridge, Agency Creek Bridge, farm land, the lavender farms and more urban sites such as the Westside Bicycle Path Greenway. Historical landscapes that have faded into the past could perhaps also be represented such as the Wallace Covered Bridge and Newby’s gristmill. Within the concept of leaving the steel beams exposed, as was suggested in your materials, one mural panel would lead into the other. As we intend to offer many different landscapes inspired by the area, this can be accomplished by bringing an element(s) from the proceeding panel into the next. For example, if one of the landscapes was from Yamhill Oaks Preserve, the blue butterfly would be represented in that panel and also seen in the next.

Incorporating people exercising:

1. People exercising can be rendered by receding the figures within the landscape so that they come into harmony with the mural instead of being the primary images. Let me explain: You use the shape of the person, like a silhouette, but instead of the figure being one dark shade, the colors and movements of the landscape are either lightened or darkened within the figure. This gives the appearance to the figure being “Transparent” yet present.

2. The figures could be treated in the “Transparent” manner, or more realized and integrated into the action of the landscape. For example, a person doing pull ups using the branch of a tree.

3. The figures could simple be an additional element that contributes to the dimensionality of the mural, fully realized, or in sihloutte. They would be forward in the painted plane using gym equipment such as weights.

These are a few of the directions that can be discussed. From there, we would draft examples of the direction(s) that are of interest. Once the direction is agreed upon, we would proceed to development and then to fabrication. We are available to move forward in accordance to the timeline indicated in your materials.

The History of Land Use in Hillsdale - 2012 – Angelina Marino-Heidel and Joel Heidel Exterior mural, acrylic on prepared concrete, UV and anti-graffiti coating; Dimensions: 932 sq. ft.; Commissioning Agent: RACC, City of Portland Public Art Collection; Site: Portland, OR Budget: $27,000; Design Team: Committee Reviews; Site Specific: Historically, the mural site is the cross roads of an area rich in dairy farming and of a land grant that created the forested Terwilliger Park Way. It also honors the Portland view benches, SW walking trails, the history of Capitol HWY and acknowledges it as an ancient foot path to the Willamette used by indigenous people. Bottom: the mural interacts with shadows and weather.

2. Bird Child Travels Through History – 2014 - Angelina Marino-Heidel Interior mural, acrylic on aluminum composite board; Dimensions 4’ x 21’; Commissioning Agent; Shute Library; Site: Hillsboro, OR; Budget: $5,350; Design Committee Reviews; Site Specific: The mural hangs in the children’s section and is the focal point of the entire library. It responds to the multi-cultural population of the neighborhood and architectural themes.

Plaza Del Sol Terra Mural – 2009 – Angelina Marino-Heidel Exterior mural, acrylic on asphalt, concrete orbs; Dimensions: 14,000 sq. ft.; Commissioning Agent: Gresham Urban Planning; Site: Rockwood Police Station; Gresham, OR; Budget: Part of $150,000 Temporary Project; Design Team: City of Gresham Committee Reviews; Site Specific The mural was positioned by using a pendulum made of rock. At a predetermined time day, the pendulum cast a Shadow illuminating the direction of true north. The rays of the sun and reflects a compass-like design. The top image is an aerial photo of the project in progress. The bottom right was taken upon its completion and includes concrete orbs to mark the planets. The overall imagery creates a Mandela of the sun, orbiting planets within their relative distances. The color schematic features the colors of the rainbow, ROYGBIV. Within the mural triangular graphics were set and disclose the distance from planets to sun and are written in three languages.

The School of Outdoor Learning Mural – 2012 Exterior mural, acrylic on cement wall; 1400 sq. ft.; Commissioning Agent: Beaverton Arts Commission, City of Beaverton, OR; Site – Alleyway; Budget: $24,000; Site Specific Project Partners: Beaverton Arts Commission Oversight Committee, Downtown Neighborhood Association, Phil Wikelund Fund; Community Involvement: Public Paints, Neighborhood Association, And Cultural Festival Location Local Business Street Fair Fundraisers, Dedication Ceremony Lead by Mayor Doyle Inspired by a phrase from Luther Burbank’s manifesto, The Human Plant, considering youth and the outdoors, the mural ties into the areas historical wet lands. The project involved several public paints. The mural was painted in a large alleyway as part of the Art in Unexpected Places movement in Beaverton. Here you see views from each side of the alley and a close-up of a Great Egret. Bottom: This is a broadside of the final schematic which shows the full content of the mural.
