In this series of four eight-minute videos, Abu Sarah meets with people from both sides of the conflict in order to better understand and communicate how this international dispute impacts their everyday lives. Use these videos to give students a broader understanding of both the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and the concept of conflict resolution. Please watch these videos in order. Each presents a different perspective on the Israeli- Palestinian conflict. "In the conflict zone," Abu Sarah says, "everything depends on which side you are on." Video 1: Uneasy Coexistence For Israelis and Palestinians trying to lead an ordinary life, the complications of living in a conflict zone can be extraordinary. Aziz Abu Sarah meets with people from both sides to understand how this conflict impacts their daily lives. Video 2: Israel Defense Forces For most Israelis, military service is mandatory. Aziz Abu Sarah meets with some of the young people who form the backbone of the Israel Defense Forces, and rides along as they encounter protesters from the Palestinian village of Nabi Saleh. Video 3: Palestinian Protesters Throughout the West Bank, Israeli settlements and Palestinian villages co-exist in close proximity. Conflict over resources ensue, and can turn deadly. Aziz Abu Sarah takes a look at one such conflict, between the Palestinian village of Nabi Saleh and Israeli settlement of Halamish. In this report, he embeds with Palestinian protesters as they clash with Israeli soldiers. Video 4: A Space to Talk A soccer game may not necessarily lead to peace in the Middle East, but you have to start somewhere, so why not with soccer? Aziz Abu Sarah's goal is to create opportunities for dialogue among people that are on opposing sides of a conflict. The hope is that if each side sees the other as human beings, they are less likely to support one another’s destruction. Could a soccer game among mixed teams of Israeli and Palestinian boys help? For more information and discussion questions on Aziz Abu Sarah and these videos, please read this March 2013 blog post. Questions Aziz Abu Sarah interacts with people on both sides of the “conflict zone.” What methods does Abu Sarah use that allow him to talk to people on both sides of the issue? Abu Sarah uses non-judgmental language, doesn’t yell or scold, allows people to speak for themselves, doesn’t interrupt, and he doesn’t get angry. In the second video, as Abu Sarah talks with members of the IDF and Palestinian protesters in the West Bank, they both identify a resource—not a religion or ideology—as the source of conflict. What is this resource? A natural spring that lies between the Palestinian village of Nabi Saleh and the Israeli settlement of Halamish. Talking to Israelis, what Abu Sarah calls the “day-to-day impact” of the conflict is a sense of insecurity and fear. For Palestinians, it’s a sense of oppression and injustice. Abu Sarah listens to the personal experiences of Israelis and Palestinians. His work puts a focus on these personal stories, not opinions or beliefs. Is there a local conflict that students think would benefit from both sides listening to personal stories from the other side? How could these stories be expressed? Answers may vary. Issa Dept. of English & Translation, Jadara University, PO box 733, Irbid, Jordan Abstract This study is devoted to discuss the renditions of the prophets' names in the Holy Quran due to the authority of the religious text where they reappear, the significance of the figures who carry them, the fact that they exist in many languages, and the fact that the Holy Quran addresses all mankind. The data are drawn from two translations of the Holy Quran by Ali (1964), and Al-Hilali and Khan (1993). It examines the renditions of the twenty five prophets' names with reference to translation strategies in this respect, showing that Ali confused the conveyance of six names whereas Al-Hilali and Khan confused the conveyance of four names. Discussion has been raised thereupon to present the correct rendition according to English dictionaries and encyclopedias in addition to versions of the Bible which add a historical perspective to the study. Introduction In Prophets’ names comprise a significant part of people's names which in turn constitutes a main subdivision of proper nouns which include in addition to people's names the names of countries, places, months, days, holidays etc. In terms of translation, many translators opt for transliterating proper names thinking that transliteration is a straightforward process depending on an idea deeply rooted in many people's minds that proper nouns are never translated or that the translation of proper names is as Vermes (2003:17) states "a simple automatic process of transference from one language to another." Even though East Jerusalemites have the status of permanent residents in Israel and are entitled welfare and municipal services, only as little as 10% of the mu- nicipal budget is allocated to East Jerusalem. There is a shortage of services such as water, sewage, road maintenance and garbage collection. The schools in East Jerusalem are in deplorable condition and there is a lack of classrooms and qualified staff. Some claim that the neglect is caused by Pales- tinians’ non-participation in the municipal elections. Palestinians in East Jerusalem have tradition- ally been boycotting the municipal elections in Jerusalem since the annexation in 1967. The reason for the boycott stems from recognizing the legitimacy of the Jerusalem municipality and Israel’s control over East Jerusalem. Thus, the PLO and religious leaders encourage East Jerusalemites not to vote in the elections. However, in 2018 there was an unprecedented interest in the elections among Palestinians. Two Palestinian candidates intended to enter the electoral race, albeit only one ran for the council seat. This thesis seeks to examine how Palestinian engagement in the elections has changed throughout the years by looking at historical timeline, analyzing Palestinians’ pro and contra elections arguments and discussing Israel’s policies towards East Jerusalem residents.

    Saints Anne & Joachim ach year the Church venerates the memory of Saints Anne & Joachim Eon July 26th. An ancient story dating to the first centuries of the Church’s life recalls how Saints Anne & Joachim, like Abraham and Sarah, were scorned by their neighbors because they had no children. Years of longing did not weaken their trust in God, but grief eventually drove Saint Joachim into the wilderness to fast and pray. Saint Anne, remaining at home, dressed in mourning clothes and wept because she had no child of her own. Seeing her mistress distressed, a servant girl reminded Anne to put her trust in God. Saint Anne washed her face, put on her bridal clothes and went to a garden to plead with God for a child. Angels appeared to Saint Anne in her garden and Saint Joachim in the desert, promis- ing that, despite their old age, they would give birth to a child who would be known throughout the world. The new parents ran to meet one another at Jerusalem’s Golden Gate, and with a kiss rejoiced in the new life which God had promised would be theirs. Saints Anne and Joachim are powerful intercessors for all married couples, expectant mothers and married couples who are having difficulty conceiving, as well as all who have grown old. About the Mosaic The art of mosaic dates back some five thousand years to ancient Babylon. The mosaic of Saints Anne and Joachim, depicted on the cover of this novena, was made of an Italian glass called smalti. Its intentionally uneven surface makes it highly reflective.

Rebecca thought Jacob should be the next leader of the Jewish people, even though it was Esau’s right as the older son. Rebecca helped Jacob trick Isaac. Isaac blessed Jacob instead of Esau and Jacob became the next leader. Jacob- Jacob was the clever, younger son of Isaac and Rebecca. With the help of his mother, Jacob became the next leader of the Jewish people.

For biblical women, a major source of suffering is infertility. Although only described in short portions scattered throughout the stories, infertility plays a significant role in the lives of biblical women. The tales of Sarah, Rachel, and Hannah have prompted major discussion about infertility amongst scholars. Initially, the reason infertility causes suffering for these women seems obvious: their inability to give birth to a child eliminates their chance of experiencing the love motherhood offers. However, their suffering was rooted much more deeply; barrenness during biblical history threatened women’s identity, lineage, and status, which reveals how infertility was perceived during ancient times. Today, these notions have carried forward, marking the lives of, and giving guidance to, modern women struggling with their own infertility. Before exploring Sarah, Rachel, and Hannah’s infertility, it is necessary to define the terms used to describe the ways infertility threatened women’s lives.

    UNCORRECTED PROOF Palestinian Political Forgiveness: Agency, Permissibility, and Prospects The Israel-Palestine conflict stands at the heart of tensions in the Middle East and, more than that, at the heart of tensions between the West and the Islamic world.1 It is sometimes suggested that the resolution of this conflict will require forgiveness on the part of both Palestine and Israel.2 However, what such forgiveness would involve has not been adequately explored. Our aim is to remedy this gap in the discussion. We shall focus, in particular, on Palestinian political forgiveness. There are several reasons for adopting such a focus. The first concerns the distinctiveness of the Palestinian case. Whereas Israel is a durable law-based polity (at least within its 1967 borders), Palestine is a disag- gregated polity in flux. This difference in the nature of the two polities has significant implications for what forgiveness might involve in the two cases. Second, there is a considerable asymmetry in the scale of for- giveness required. The major concessions with regard to territory and people are Palestinian. Israel was, after all, carved out of Palestine, and will continue to occupy at least 78 percent of the territory that comprised British mandatory Palestine prior to 1948. In human terms, Jews can ex- pect to retain their right of immigration to Israel based on the 1950 Law of Return, whilst Palestinians are a refugee people, many of whom will be required to forgo the right of return in a final settlement.     Dreamers: Jonah Sermon by Pastor Sarah Rohde Bethlehem Lutheran Church, St. Charles January 28, 2021 Many of us, I’m sure, grew up hearing the story of Jonah. We know it to be a theatrical story, and one that points us to God’s persistence in spite of human resistance. Those are absolutely two themes that come out of this story, but as I was reading it again this week, I was drawn to some of the other details and nuances that I think are worth exploring today. The word of the Lord came to Jonah a second time – is how our passage for today begins. So this is after Jonah has spent three days and three nights in the belly of a fish – and he’s just now seeing blue sky again, as the fish has just vomited him out on land. As he’s sort of coming to his senses again, the word of the Lord comes to him and commands him to do the very thing he was asked by God to do before he got swallowed up by a fish: “Get up, go to Ninevah, that great city, and proclaim to it the message that I tell you.” Go to Ninevah, that great city. Really? Great? All that I read about Ninevah, and frankly the reason that Jonah wanted nothing to do with it, is that they’re the enemies. Israel loathed Ninevah, and for good reason. You see, Ninevah was the capital of Assyria, and the Assyrians were the people who had destroyed the Northern Kingdom of Israel.
