Voice Leading and Text-Music Relations in David Bowie’s Early Songs * Mahew E. Ferrandino NOTE: The examples for the (text-only) PDF version of this item are available online at: h+p:/,www.mtosmt.org,issues,mto.17.23-2,mto.17.23.4.ferrandino.php 3E45 RDS: Roc6 Analysis, Pop Music, Voice Leading, David Bowie, Text and Music ABSTRACT: In this paper, I explore how voice-leading analysis can illuminate text-music relations at both structural and foreground levels in three songs by David Bowie: ;Life on Mars,” ;Five 4ears,” and ;5e Are the Dead.” The analyses provide a way of relating seemingly disparate stylistic examples through text-music relations applicable to a wide variety of roc6 music. Received May 2017 Volume 01, Number 2, December 00.7 Copyright > 00.7 Society for Music Theory Voice Leading and Text-Music Relations in David Bowie’s Early Songs ?1..@ Over the course of his five-decade career, David Bowie experimented with diverse musical genres, from fol6 and roc6 to soul, Bazz, and electronica. Though stylistically disparate, many of his songs exhibit consistent musical and lyrical connections that lend continuity to his uniDue compositional voice. For instance, there are several cases where a trac6’s tonic is purposefully obfuscated, a compositional techniDue that Mar6 Spicer calls “absent tonic,” which supports lyrical descriptions of alienation ( Spicer 2016 ). Such relationships between text and music can be illuminated through the use of reductive voice-leading graphs. Structural musical components can be contextually compared to the text of the trac6 as well as intertextually to other trac6s.

Likewise, Lemmy seemed too much a part of rock’s scenery to leave us so soon. As we went to press with this issue, we also learned the sad news that Eagles co-founder Glenn Frey had passed (look out for a full tribute next month), making this winter the worst in memory for losing legends. The only very slight consolation for all this is that it prompted us to listen again to the music that made them household names. In the case of Bowie, it was a reminder of the astonishing breadth and ambition of his music-making (see cover feature, p76). Rightly regarded as classic now, Bowie’s music must have been sensational when he was starting out – and I’m sure not everyone ‘got it’ at the time. Passing years have a habit of making the new and strange in music feel comfortably familiar, and finally classic. That thought has been a reminder of the importance of seeking out uncommon sounds, and not just sticking to your comfort zone of old favourites.

  • Glam MUS 22200
I, Gregory Weinstein, give permission to IASPM-US to publish the following syllabus on the IASPM-US website. However, I retain ownership of the syllabus and the intellectual property contained therein. Glam MUS 22200 Davidson College, Spring 2015 Instructor: Greg Weinstein ([email protected]) Description: The term “glam rock” has long been marginal to the standard narratives of pop music history. Most critics use this label in a very narrow way: it refers to a very short period of time and a small group of (primarily heterosexual male) performers, had little broad cultural importance, and is primarily understood as an index of the broader trend towards self-indulgence and excess that characterized post-1960s popular culture. This course will aim to interrogate and redefine the notion of “glam.” We will take as our starting point Philip Auslander’s notion that Glam Rock helped to lead a radical redefining of the way American and British society conceived of gender and sexuality. However, Auslander also considers “glam” performatively, as a way of offering broad social critiques by playing with one’s public persona. Following his lead—as well as the incisive troubling of “normativity” by Lauren Berlant and Michael Warner—we will consider “glam” as a very broad set of ideas and methods for understanding the performance of personal identity—including, but not limited to, gender and sexuality. We will push the concept of “glam” in several directions: the so-called “glam” or “hair” metal of the 1980s; the performance of an “authentic” folk persona; the sexualized and racialized personas adopted by hip hop artists; and the gender identity questions posed by the operatic voice.
