' D. Robert(SA Yeats The Russell Ranch oil field is located in the southern Coast Rangeswest ofBakersfield, California. Detailed subsurface mapping shows that a northwest-oriented right-lateral wrench-fault system was active from possibly latest Oligocene to Pliocene time. The effects of Quaternary thrusting were superimposed on, and in- fluenced by, structures associated with the older wrench tectonic regime. The right-lateral shear system produced a complex pattern of right-stepping en echelon folds, dip-slip faults with normal separation, and strike-slip faults with both normal and reverse separation. Deformation along the wrench system began during de- position of the late Oligocene-earlv Miocene Soda Lake Shale and Painted Rock Sandstone members of the Vaqueros Formation, pro- duciu elongate en echelon submarine troughs and highs. Northerly trending growth faults of early Miocene age caused thickening of the late Saucesian-early Relizian Saltos Shale Member of the MontereyFormation and mayhave initiated growth of the Russell Ranch anticline. Northeast- to northwest-trending normal faults and northwest-trending strike-slipfaults ofthe Russell fault system were active during deposition of a sequence tentatively correlated with the Branch Canyon Sandstone and Santa Margarita Formation of middle and late Miocene age. Strike-slip faulting produced a complex interleaving of fault slices and juxtaposed slices of contrasting lithologies and orientations. Subsequent minor movement along the wrench system folded the base of the Morales Formation, of PJ.iocene-Pleistocene age, into elongate en echelon folds. -

The base of the rock feature can be discerned in the center. i ABSTRACT The region occupied by the Chumash of south-central California were divided into sub-groups who occupied different territories and spoke separate, but related languages. The Cuyama sub-group occupied the Cuyama Valley and the surrounding hills and mountains. Branch Canyon leads roughly south from Cuyama Valley and is known to contain prehistoric archaeological sites. The site chosen for this investigation was not previously recorded, but is a large, level area where many artifacts have been found. The area is covered with little other than wildflowers and grasses, but broken groundstone is visible, and an extensive looter’s hole exists, which suggests a possible prehistoric habitation site. Local residents have recovered many artifacts here, including glass beads, indicating occupation during the historic era. The base of a large, square rock feature overlays the prehistoric site. Very little archaeological exploration has been carried out in Cuyama Valley and its surrounding environs. Few site records exist for the valley, although many sites have been recorded for the southern canyons and the potreros at the top of the Sierra Madre Range. -

Central Coast Hydrologic Region California’s Groundwater Cuyama Valley Groundwater Basin Bulletin 118 Cuyama Valley Groundwater Basin • Groundwater Basin Number: 3-13 • County: Santa Barbara, San Luis Obispo, Ventura, and Kern • Surface Area: 147,200 acres (230 square miles) Basin Boundaries and Hydrology The Cuyama Valley Groundwater Basin underlies an east-trending valley bounded on the north by the Caliente Range and on the southwest by the Sierra Madre Mountains. The valley is drained by the Cuyama River. Average annual precipitation ranges from 7 inches to 15 inches per year. Hydrogeologic Information Water Bearing Formations Groundwater is found in Holocene age alluvium, and older terrestrial deposits. Groundwater in the basin is mainly unconfined, but confined water and perched water are found locally. The specific yield is estimated to range from less than 10 percent in the southwestern part of the basin, to more than 15 percent in the northern and southeastern parts of the basin (DWR 1998). Holocene Alluvium. In the western part of the basin, the alluvium consists of thick beds of sand and gravel alternating with beds of clay. In the south central part of the basin, alluvium is predominantly sand and silt with some beds of gravel and clay. In the eastern part of the basin, alluvium consists of coarse gravel and sand. Except in the western part of the basin, the alluvium is not the principal water-bearing formation. The thickness of the alluvium is inferred to be from 150 to 250 feet (Upson and Worts 1951). Older Terrestrial Deposits. Pleistocene age terrace deposits found in the valley are relatively thin and mainly above the zone of saturation.
