Welcome to Michigan Opera Theatre's 43rd fall season

elcome to "Drama in the D," a fall season in which we pair classics W with the best contemporary artists to honor the 200'h anniversary of two master composers, Richard Wagner and Giuseppe Verdi.

Our season opens with Wagners ghostly romantic opera, The Flying Dutchman. Two powerhouse singers make their debuts with the company in the role of Senta - American soprano Lori Phillips and Swedish soprano Elisabet Strid . Ms. Phillips first performed the role with the in 2010, while Ms. Strid has recently been applauded by critics and audiences in Europe for a strong festival season of Wagner roles. German bass-baritone Thomas Gazhelli debuts as the Dutchman, along with American bass-baritone Kristopher Irmiter. Both singers bring a seasoned, rich Lone to the role.

In November, we present one of the most performed operas in the world, Verdis La Traviata. American soprano Nicole Cabell returns to our stage after winning the BBC Cardiff Singer of the World Competition. Ms. Cabell alternates the role of Violetta with American soprano Corinne Winters, whos had critical success performing the role internationally Two handsome lyric tenors, American Zach Borichevsky, and Italian Leonardo Caimi, are making their company debuts as Alfredo, Violetta's true love.

As Detroit's home of dance, we bring you our 18'h season of "Dance in the D. " An exciting company debut arrives in October, when LA-based Diavolo appears for the first time on our stage. Diavolo was founded by jacques Heim, who choreographed Cirque Du Soleils "KA". The companys acrobatics and architectural set pieces, combined with thrilling movement, will likely expand your definition of dance.

Our annual holiday tradition continues Thanksgiving weekend with the return of BalletMet Columbus' The Nutcracker. The classic famil y favorite includes company dancers along with students from local dance studios performing to Tchaikovsky's timeless score, played live by our very own Michigan Opera Theatre orchestra. Too Hot To Handel , another holiday tradition, comes in December, with the orchestra and Rackham Symphony Choir. This jazz-gospel Messiah is, of course, too hot to miss.

I must take a moment to thank all of you- patrons, foundations, corporations- who continue to support us. While the world seems to be focused on Detroits bankruptcy, your generosity tells a better story one of Detroits rich cultural past, present, and future. As always, we are grateful for the continued support of our fall opera season sponsor, Ford Motor Company, along with the individual donors and volunteers whose gifts of time and investment allow us to keep the drama on the stage.

Thank you for visiting, and enjoy this dramatic fall season!
