THE AUTHOR

I, Charles L. Stafford, was born June 16, 1864, on a f ann owned by Brigs Kay near Springdale Station. When I was one year old my father moved to a farm owned by Charles Ellis, on Evesham and Glendale Roads. Two years later we rooved to Coffin's Comer on a farm owned by Jesse Peterson on Evesham and Haddonfield Roods. In 1874 my grandfather, Joseph Collings Stafford Sr. died. We then moved on the homestead at Horner Hill. I went to public school in the basement of the Glendale M.E. Church and the district No. 9 at Homer Hill. In 1883 and 1884 I went to Pennington Seminary, Pennington, N. J.

After my father's death in 1890 I farmed the farm for one year and then the family moved to Haddonfield in mother's house, 106 Ellis St. I studied telegraphy and worked for a short time for the Camden & Atlantic Railroad as expressman and later for the Haddonfield Electric Light and Power Co., where the Haddon Ice and Coal Co. stood later. I left the Electric Light Co. about 1893 and went to work for Walker and Kepler, 531 Chestnut St., Philo., Pa. as a trouble or repairman and while there I took a night course in Electrirol Engineering under Professor Row! and, at Drexel Institute. Because of my practical experience, I finished a four-year course in two years.

In 1896 I went to Brigantine Beach to wire the hotel, the Holand House, cmd the Pavilions at each end of the island cmd the railroad station and buildings of the Brigantine Entertainment Co. After the Brigantine work was finished I heard, through Vandergrift & Jacobs, grading contractors, of a railrood being built in West Virginia, up the Elk River; it was the Charleston,, Clendenon, & Sutton Railway. I went to Charleston and erected a pole line and installed telegraph instruments the entire length of the railroad.

In 1897 I passed a civil service examination and was sent to the batteries on the Delaware River. I had charge of all the electrical construction, excepting the main power plant, for Fort Mott, the Fort at Delaware City, and the repairing of old Fort Delaware. After the work was finished they gave me a furlough without pay.

I then went to Haddonfield to do contracting and all kinds of electrical construction. About that time I bid on the installation of a turbine Electric Light and Power Plant for the Borough _of Tuckerton, but did not land the job. About 1905 I installed all the wiring for lights and the power of the big motors for the Victor Talking Machine Co. I made a specialty of Isolated Lighting and Power Plcmts with Storage Battery, and installed seven, ranging in price from $1765.00 to $2200.00.

In 1922 I passed the required examination and was given a State Motor Vehicle Agency. I was the agent for eight years until a legion man was appointed in my place with no charges against my office. I had a heart attack and could not continue my line of business and since have been registered as retired.

EDITORS' NOTE

The information included in this volume covers five generations of the Stafford Family in America. This information has been accumulated by Charles L. Stafford over a number of years. In pre JXIring it for publication, the editors have noted "No Record Available" where Mr. Stafford's notes give no information.

Although the use of a decimal system for identification in this volume may, at a glance, appear cumbersome, it should be easily understood after the following brief explanation.

One digit indicates the first generation; two digits indicate the second g~neration; three digits the third; etc. Thus 1.3.2 would indicate the second child of the third child of John Stafford.

FIRST GENERATION

John Stafford, the first of that name that can be traced of the family in this section, came from , England, in the year 1765, with an uncle who left him (John) at Kensington, Pa., himself returning to England. From the nature and kind of tools found among his effects, he must have been a cabinetmaker at Kensington, Pa.

George R. Prowell, in his "History of Camden County." page 60, says: "Among thoes who enlisted in the service of the revolution from Haddonfield, N .J. region were John Stafford, and because of Stafford's stalwart figure and military bearing he was selected as one of Washington's body guard, but at the battle of Germantown was so badly wounded by a shot in the thigh that he was retired from active service. He was a sergeant."

It was learned that he was affiliated with the Masons' Lodge. Among his effects was a lamb-skin apron, and his name appears in Penn Jurisdiction in the year 1787.

He came to New Jersey about August 15, 1773, and settled on his wife's farm which she had from her former husband, Joseph Matlack, near Glendale, New Jersey. It was known as the Wilkins Farm, later owned by David Baird.

William Matlack came from Nottinghamshire, England and, in 1677, built the first house in Burlington, New Jersey, he being a carpenter. He married May Hancock and settled near Moores town, New Jersey. Among his children there was a son John who married Hannah Horner. One of their children was Benjcnnin, who married Jane Cheesman. Benjamin and Jane had a son, Joseph Matlack, who married Hannah Collins. They had one child, Rebecca, who married John Eastlack. Joseph Matlack, the husband of Hannah died. She then married John Stafford.

John Stafford was born in Staffordshire, England, in 1753. He died at Horner Hill, 1828 and is buried in Old Newton Yard, West Collingswood, New Jerse¥. Hannah Matlack died May 17, 1833 and also is buried in Old Newton Yard.

:-~e act under which the county of Camden was formed provided that, after one year from date of erection, the location of county buildings should be decided by a vote of qualified electors in the county, at such time and places as the Board of Freeholders should appoint. In accordance with this act, the freeholders on April 7, 1845, set apart August 12, 1845, as the day of election. Prior to that time a county meeting was held at White Horse Tavern in Gloucester township for the purpose of selecting and agreeing upon some town most suitable in which to erect the public b~ildings. Richard Stafford was chosen president of the meeting.

The Early Courts of Camden County: The courts of old Gloucester County, which of course had jurisdiction over the territory, are now included in Camden. The first court held in Camden County appears to have been the March Term of the Oyer and Terminer, 1845, and the following is the first entry upon the record: "Camden Oyer & Terminer, tv1arch Term 1845" Tuesday, March 25, Court met at 10:00 A.M. Present: The Honorable Thomas Carpenter, Isaac Cole, Joseph W. Sloan, Joseph C. Stafford Sr., Joseph Collins, Nathan Lippincott, William Brown, and Joel Wood.

John Stafford brother of Joseph C. Stafford Sr. was on the jury of the first case tried in the court.

Among the list of Lay judges: Joseph C. Stafford Sr. 1844, Richard Stafford 1848, and Joseph C. Stafford Sr. 1853 and 1854.

Joseph C. Stafford Sr. was State Senator 1845.

Joseph C. Stafford Jr. was a member of the State Assembly 1859.

Clayton Stafford was a member of the State Assembly 1882-1883.

The present brick building opposite the drug store, Main and Mechanic Streets, Haddonfield, N.J., was erected in 1777 by Edward Gibbs for a tavern and kept by him during the Revolutionary War C!'lJ later in 1821 by Joseph C. Stafford Sr.
