ADMINISTRATION

About the Institution

Established: is a public institution that was founded in 1913 in , GA. Initially an outgrowth of the Georgia Institute of Technology called The Evening School of Commerce and later incorporated into the University of Georgia as The Atlanta Division of the University of Georgia, GSU encapsulates the expansion, cooperative efforts, and spirit of civic engagement unique to downtown Atlanta. From its acquisition of a unique mission in 1961 as Georgia State College (and Georgia State University in 1969), GSU continues to grow and evolve while retaining the university’s core commitments to teaching, research, and public service.

Academics: Eight schools and colleges constitute the university: The Andrew Young School of Policy Studies, the Byrdine F. Lewis School of Nursing and Health Professions, the College of Arts and Sciences, the College of Education, the College of Law, the Honors College, the School of Public Health, and the J. Mack Robinson College of Business. GSU offers nearly 300 degree and certificate programs in over 100 fields of study. In FY 2014, GSU conferred 7,404 degrees, contributing to a total of 222,593 degrees conferred since 1913. Georgia State University is accredited by the Southern Association of

Colleges and Schools.

Students: Approximately 32,500 undergraduate and graduate students were enrolled as of fall 2014. Full-time undergraduate, graduate, and professional students totaled 24,195 and part-time undergraduate, graduate, and professional students totaled 8,346. Out of the total students enrolled, 19,201 were female and 13,340 were male. Students who identified as American Indian totaled 63, as Asian totaled 3,394, as Black/African-American totaled 11,873, as Hawaiian/Pacific Islander totaled 27, as Hispanic totaled 2,664, as Multiracial totaled 1,334, as White totaled 10,865, as Non-resident alien totaled 1,490, and students who chose not to report their race totaled 933. The total undergraduate enrollment was 25,314 students, the total graduate enrollment was 6,338 students, and the total professional enrollment was 641 students. In-state residence status was claimed by 29,078 students and 3,463 students claimed out-of-state status.

Faculty: The total full time faculty for fall 2014 was 1,294. Out of the total full time faculty employed, 1,206 were full time instructional faculty. PhDs and professional degrees were held by 87.8% of the total full time instruction faculty, and Masters and Specialists degrees were held by 11.9%. Full time instructional faculty with tenure comprised 47.2% of the total instructional faculty and 20.4% were on tenure track.

Facilities: GSU’s main campus occupies downtown Atlanta, spanning 71.79 acres with 61 buildings. Established in 1913, the main campus of GSU has 206 classrooms, 297 teaching laboratories, 190 open laboratories, 643 research laboratories, and 5,127 offices. Additional campuses include the Panthersville, Language Research and Indian Creek Lodge locations in Decatur, the Hard Labor Creek location in Social Circle, the North Metro at Alpharetta location in Alpharetta, and two Robinson College of Business MBA Centers in Dunwoody and Atlanta (Lenox). Outside of Georgia, GSU also occupies CHARA at Mt. Wilson in California for astronomical research. In 2014, ten renovation and improvement projects were completed, all together totaling an approximate cost of $33.2 million.

Costs: Tuition and fees for fall 2015 new resident undergraduates totals $5,343 and for new non- resident undergraduates totals $14,518 per semester. For new resident graduates, tuition totals $5,648, and for non-resident graduates tuition totals $15,975 per semester. For new resident graduates in nursing, tuition totals $5,720, and tuition totals $16,563 for non-resident graduates in nursing per semester. Tuition for new resident graduates in business totals $6,860, and non-residents totals $16,563 per semester. And for new residents in law, tuition totals $8,429; for non-residents tuition totals $18,288 per semester.

Finances: GSU’s total revenue for FY 2014 was approximately $661.9 million, and approximately $187.3 million (28.31% of total revenue) came from the state of Georgia. Expenditures for instruction were approximately $200.8 million (32.62% of total expenditures) and expenditures for research were approximately $115.1 million (18.7% of total expenditures).

Athletics: GSU is a part of the Sun Belt Conference and has 15 NCAA Division I intercollegiate athletic teams. The mascot, Pounce, represents the Panthers, and sports the university colors blue and white.

Georgia State University’s Strategic Plan

Georgia State University adopted its Strategic Plan 2011-2016/21 in January 2011. A University- Community endeavor, the Plan took nearly a year to develop with input from faculty and staff across the university. The Plan’s Goals and Initiatives were framed by the overarching goal of Georgia State University “to be recognized as a dynamic academic community where teaching and research combine to produce leaders and create solutions to conquer the challenges of the 21st century.” Five Goals, each with its own set of Initiatives, are outlined in the Strategic Plan.

Goal 1: Become a national model for undergraduate education by demonstrating that students from all backgrounds can achieve academic and career success at high rates. Initiative 1: Increase the level of scholarship support for undergraduate students. Initiative 2: Establish a Student Success Center. Initiative 3: Implement an Undergraduate Signature Experience. Initiative 4: Establish an Honors College.

Goal 2: Significantly strengthen and grow the base of distinctive graduate and professional programs that assure development of the next generation of researchers and societal leaders. Initiative 1: Expand support for doctoral programs. Initiative 2: Leverage our national reputation in professional degree programs for the development of societal leaders.

Goal 3: Become a leading public research university addressing the most challenging issues of the 21st century. Initiative 1: Enhance a research culture. Initiative 2: Establish University-Level Research Centers. Initiative 3: Create a Georgia State Faculty Fellowship Program. Initiative 4: Enhance supporting infrastructure for the conduct of research. Initiative 5: Enhance Georgia State's contributions to the sciences, and health and medical research and education

 America Reads: A federal reading program.  American Red Cross of Fulton County  Community Foundation for Greater Atlanta: The primary goal of The Community Foundation for Greater Atlanta is to improve the quality of life in the Atlanta area.  Foundation Center: The Foundation Center is the nation's leading authority in philanthropy.  Habitat for Humanity: This organization builds homes for those in need.  Hands On Atlanta: Hands On Atlanta is Atlanta's foremost volunteer organization.  JumpStart : JumpStart provides college students with the opportunity to impact the lives of preschool students.  Junior Achievement: Join Junior Achievement in its effort to equip young people to succeed in the global economy.  Operation PEACE  Project Healthy Grandparents  Teach for America: An organization dedicated to building future leaders through education in need.  The Study Hall : Empowering the Peoplestown community to become more competitive and productive contributors to society. Student Health Promotion

 WestCare Foundation: The Department of Student Health Promotion works closely with WestCare Foundation to provide regular HIV testing and prevention services on campus. They are also involved in our health fairs each semester.  Georgia Department of Public Health: The Department of Student Health Promotion works closely with GA DPH to provide information and referrals for STD testing and treatment for our campus community. They are also involved in our health fairs each semester.  Magnolia Creek: The Department of Student Health Promotion has an ongoing collaborative relationship with Magnolia Creek to promote health and wellness. Our partnership focuses on the prevention and treatment of eating disorders and body image issues. Magnolia Creek participates in our health fairs each semester as well as various healthy body image promotion events throughout the year. Byrdine F. Lewis School of Nursing and Health Professions

 Project Healthy Grandparents (PHG) is a service/research project whose mission is to improve the quality of life for families where grandparents are raising grandchildren in parent-absent households. PHG works to strengthen these families by providing social work and nursing services, support groups and improved access to community resources. Through these interventions, the program seeks a reduction in the stress level of grandparents and stabilization or improvement in the family’s overall physical, emotional and economic well-being. Involved in the program are faculty and students from nursing and social work as well as various other disciplines at GSU.  The Health and Wellness Collaborative provides primary and preventative healthcare to medically underserved communities. Staffed by the School of Nursing faculty, the program also provides opportunities for undergraduate and graduate nursing students to work with vulnerable urban populations.  The Laboratory for Elite Athlete Performance gives students the opportunity to collaborate with faculty using the latest high-tech equipment to evaluate performance of elite athletes, including members of various U.S. national teams.
