Nos. 6, 7, 27 and 28 have been obtained from the abstracts of the National Registers of Oitizens prepared by the enumerators. rrbese registers consist of a trfl.nscription of tbe re'plies to the more important census questions in respect of every person enumerated. FigureR of lit~rates Rccording to the tracts, deri ved form the. census slips shown in Table B. The census RJip, on which the replies to the census qnestions were recorp_ed, was the main document, the National Registers of Cit~eDs was inerely a copy. Moreover errors seem to have been committed by the enumerators while preparing the abstracts of N n.tional Registers of Oitizells. Un.-populated villages ltnd hamlets bltve 'not been gi\'en a plaoe in the n.bsliracts, their lists are given at the end. Eepeated attemptp. were made to verify the names of villages through the looal officers, ana correotions suggested have been em bodied so far it was practicable. At the bme of tbie 'Verification certain other discrepancies also came to notice namely (1) confusion in the treatment of h~mlets waR observed in Rome cases, (2) certain villages belonging to Olle tehsil were entered in auotber one, and 1rice versa, (3) the population figureR of villages having simii3Jl' or common names were wrongly entered, (4) in some ('flRes figureR of hamlets were found totalled with the villa~(' figures twice. This resulted in a slight change in total figures.. This explainc:; the. diffemnce, if any, betw('en the totals of the Primary.Oensus AbRtr!lcts. and-tposf? of tables prepn.rc'd from it before suoh verification. I DEFINITIONS AND KEY SYMBOLS. Traot:-In past censuses the census figures were tabulated by administrative units, i e., districts, tehsils, etc. rl'his time in almost all tables the figures have been represented by units which have been teehnically called "TRAC'l'S ". Tracts are of three hinas, (1) all villages of a suo-division taken together form one rural tract; (2) all towns (which are not cities) in a district tn,ken together form an "urban non-city tract" and (3)every city is an " urban city tract" or in short "city tract".
