They numbered in the hundreds, collected from all across the United States, most wearing matching garb of simple black T-shirts and white-lettered slogans common to disaffected youth. Those in the movement believed the rally was a breakthrough, a sign of growing popularity and acceptance, leading perhaps to eventual victory. Others watched and feared its growth, and waited nervously for other signs of a new and unwelcome popular trend in political and historical illiteracy. But these hopes and fears proved to be groundless.
