he principle owners of Kevin Distributing, Curt Stene and Dan Bitney, have been involved in oilfield activi- T ties since the 1970’s. Curt Stene worked summers during high school on both service and drilling rigs in the oil and gas regions of North Central Montana. He continued working many different jobs including maintenance on oil and gas wells and production facilities until 1990, when he got involved with Dan Bitney in field tank repair, sandblasting, fiberglass and epoxy work.

Dan Bitney started a spray foam insulation business in the same part of north Central Montana in 1978. Mostly field production tanks, gas shacks and flow lines were the target of the foam in- sulation applications at that time. Later there were many different applications of foam and coating performed in a radius now in- cluding most of the Western United States, including roofing and both industrial and residential insulation. Sand blasting, and tank repair became part of the scope of work, and then in 1990, Bitney and Stene became united in their efforts to promote the business throughout the area and beyond.

Because of the “vendor” status achieved with many oil compa- nies and other industrial engineering firms, companies started to send Bitney and Stene to locations around the globe. Spray foam and coating projects were completed in Hawaii, Phillipines, Rus- sia, Ukraine and all corners of the United States, including Alaska. Most of the projects entailed the application of the polyurethane foam onto large storage vessels for insulation. The vessels often needed to be sandblasted, primed, foamed and then coated with any number of types of elastomeric coatings designed to protect the foam. Other large projects included foaming and fireproofing the interiors of telescope enclosures on top of Mauna Kea (14,000 ft. elevation), insulating potato storage cellars for the Russian Government, and various roofing projects around the globe.

Travel started to become a personal obstacle for all those involved in the company, so an idea developed in the early 1990’s with Stene and Bitney of forming a regional distributing company to sell

A major push in North America presently is to become less dependent upon imported oil. There is proving to be a vast quantity of oil and gas preserves across all of North America which can now be produced due to advanced technology in the drilling industry. A huge prob- lem is getting the produced hydrocarbons to market or refineries to be processed. Pipeline construction is and will continue to be one of the answers. Just like in the new exploration and production techniques of gas and oil, there are new methods of installing and maintaining the pipelines. One of these new processes is

NEW! During a recent earn- ings conference call, NuStar an- nounced deals with Valero Energy Corp and EOG Resources regard- ing the Eagle Ford shale oil play in south Texas. The announcement included information regarding the construction of a 70,000 barrel- per-day loading facility at NuStar’s St. James, Louisiana, terminal and the construction of 360,000 barrels per day in extra tank storage. The project is anticipated to come on- line in the second quarter of 2012 with a portion of it possibly coming online by the fourth quarter of 2011. Reports indicate that production of crude oil from the vast Eagle Ford has jumped to about 160,000 bar- rels per day today from 71,000 bpd just two months ago.

NEW! Golden Valley Electric Association and Flint Hills Resources Alaska have commenced engineering on a natural gas liquefaction facility on Alaska’s North Slope. The two companies have signed a memoran- dum of understanding to exclusively negoti- ate agreements to construct and operate a facility that would enable liquefied natural gas to be trucked to the Interior by first quarter 2014. GVEA would use the gas to power its newest turbine at the North Pole Power Plant. Flint Hills would use the gas as a supply fuel for the refining process at its North Pole re- finery. The deal would deliver gas “at cost” to each company. Flint Hills would become more competitive and efficient by burning LNG in- stead of refined crude oil in its refinery. “We are excited about this bridging project,” said Brian Newton, president and CEO of GVEA. “GVEA and Flint Hills are customers of each other and this is a continuation of our ongoing relationship. Flint Hills brings the expertise and financial strength to work with us to make this project a reality. “While GVEA supports a gas pipeline to Fairbanks, trucking LNG would lessen our dependence on high-priced oil thereby bringing energy cost relief soon-

The Keystone Houston Lateral and capacity expansion are included in the original scope of the Keystone XL U.S. Presidential Per- mit application process, which is expected to conclude by the end of 2011. Subject to the receipt of the Keystone XL Presidential Permit, transportation service to Houston on the Keystone Pipeline System is expected to begin in 2014. Keystone XL is a proposed 1,700 mile pipeline that would expand the existing Keystone system and deliver crude oil to refineries in the U.S. Midwest and the Gulf Coast. Keystone would increase U.S. energy security by providing Americans with a stable, secure supply of U.S. domestic and Canadian oil versus continuing to import un- stable, higher priced crude from the Middle East and Venezuela. Keystone would create 20,000 American jobs during construction, inject $20 billion into the U.S. economy and pay over $5 billion in property taxes over the lifetime of the project.
