Scenic drives through the dales - Yorkshire Dales National Park Forum - Tripadvisor

I'm planning to visit the beautiful Yorkshire Dales next weekend. Unfortunately I only have one day to spend in the dales, but I do have a car. Suggestions of scenic drives would be greatly appreciated. I am also hoping to do some hour long walks at some of the must see spots. I really like to get a sense of the dales, with the stone walls, the valleys and rivers. I'm leaving from . Difficult to go wrong. is a lovely vilage, Up Beat and Down Dale: Life and Crimes in the Yorkshire Countryside so are many others. I'd try to see the Ribblehead viaduct if you haven't seen it before. Nearby Clapham is another beautiful village with a superb pub, and good walks to caves and waterfalls. Or, you could head further north to places like Hawes. Almost every Up Beat and Down Dale: Life and Crimes in the Yorkshire Countryside to it is scenic. Malham Coveis another great attraction. Have fun. An alternative would be go from Kettlewell via to Leyburn then Aysgarth Falls then Hawes but a fair bit longer. This would work well coming from Leedsas I am sure you know the Dales cover a very large area. A walk to the cove and Gordale Scar at Malham could easily be incorporated. As I suggested in my previous post I'd recommend stopping off at Saltaire for a short time on the way back too rather than returning directly to Leeds. The food at the cafe in Salts Mill Saltaire is very good too! I'm assuming you have GPS so get the co-ordinates for the Tan Hill Inn - approach northwards via the Buttertubs Pass and I guarantee you it'll be one of the best drives you'll ever do. Thanks to everyone for their wonderful suggestions. My friend and I followed the route Morgana had posted via the weblink and it was fantastic, great detailed instructions satnav was there for backup. We had a stopover at Grassington which was quaint but I feel it's very much a tourist trap as there were numerous other small villages just as nice. The scenery was gorgeous, up and down, driving next to the pastures on these narrow lanes. Our final stop was in Austwick which was the beginning of this 2. It included some steep mountains in order to see the Erratics except we Up Beat and Down Dale: Life and Crimes in the Yorkshire Countryside lost but still saw some spectacular scenery through numerous pastures by crossing the stiles awesome experience to be up, close and personal to the sheep and the little lambsover some streams on the clapper Up Beat and Down Dale: Life and Crimes in the Yorkshire Countryside. The hike really gave me a sense of what Yorkshire Dales is all about. We had a lovely resting stop at the Game Cock Inn in Austwick just to hear the locals banter at the bar the bartender's sister was quite a hit that night and tried some lovely ales. All in all, I give the Dales two big thumbs up and would visit it again with no hesitation. Gorgeous country and gorgeous people. Well, they do say that Yorkshire is God's Own Country!! Peter Robinson has bumped off quite a few people in the Yorkshire Dales. Not literally, you understand, only in print. As the best-selling author of the Inspector Banks novels — his award-winning Yorkshire-set crime series — he makes sure a dead body turns up sooner rather than later. To date, 23 Banks novels and a couple of volumes of short stories have been published across the world, winning both acclaim from critics and numerous crime fiction awards. So how has the character changed since his debut in ? No-one ever though that would happen. In fact, he likes all his main characters. That was for politeness. But that was more because he said so than because I said so! Having said that, Left Bank Pictures the production company that makes the show has been very good to me. When he completed his first Banks book — A Dedicated Man — he sent a couple of sample chapters and a plot summary to a crime fiction publisher. So I sent them that, too. Yorkshire has always informed his writing. He used to take me into the Yorkshire Dales and wait for the right light. So my love of Yorkshire goes back to my childhood and teenage years. I decided that I wanted to set my books there as it was the place I felt most strongly about. He operates out of the made-up town of Eastvale, which is a blend of Richmond and Ripon. The surrounding countryside is based on several dales, particularly Wensleydale and Up Beat and Down Dale: Life and Crimes in the Yorkshire Countryside while, for example, the fictional towns of Helmthorpe and Gratly are based on Hawes and Gayle. I can mess around with the geography and distances. It makes life a bit easier. Coming back from Canada, he is frequently amazed at the changes to his hometown of Leeds. Now it has really come into its own — and really trendy. And I like the pace of life in Richmond. I can walk to the supermarket, pub and restaurants. We look out over Richmond Castle and the hills beyond — and I never get tired of that. Toggle navigation. Search Term Search Advanced search. Home My Profile Profile gallery.
