DPS Approves New Schools

On June 18, the Public School Board voted to approve applications for ten new schools. Four of these are new Denver School of Science & Technology (DSST) middle schools and four are DSST high schools. The DSST schools include the following:

 DSST VIII Middle and High School  DSST IX Middle and High School  DSST X Middle and High School  DSST XI Middle and High School

These schools will service thousands of new students, in an effort to Winston Downs Block meet the demand for the popular DSST charter school model. By 2024 -2025 the DSST network is expected to have 22 schools operating in Denver. The locations and geographic enrollment Party Aug. 2, 6 - 8 PM boundaries have not yet been finalized.

In addition, the DPS Board approved the Downtown Denver Come join your neighbors and friends for the Winston Downs Block Expeditionary Middle School and Banneker Jameson STEM Party this August 2 in the evening from 6 to 8 PM on Virginia Ave. Academy. between S. Newport Way and S. Oneida Way. This will be our best summer party ever, with games, face painting, music, chalk art and For more information on these decisions and others, please call more. Plus, our neighborhood is changing. Lots of new families are 720-423-3210 or visit the DPS Board of Education website: moving in, and this will be a good opportunity to get to know them. http://www.boarddocs.com/co/dpsk12/board.nsf/public

The WDHOA is planning to have kosher pizza from Brooklyn Pizza available for sale, so you can skip cooking that night if you want to. We also will have ice cream and popsicles for the kids. Feel free to BYOB and enjoy responsibly at the party.

The WDHOA is planning to have a free raffle (one ticket per family) with prizes donated from local businesses. If you would like to donate something from your business for the raffle, email the WDHOA at [email protected]

The event coincides with Denver Days, which is a week set aside by the City and County of Denver for neighbors to have block parties and other celebrations. The City has waived all block party permit fees and will provide free street barricades. We will be having the City block off Virginia Ave. between S. Oneida Way and S. Newport Way for the party to help keep all party goers safe. Keep in mind that you may need to drive around this block from about 5 to 9 PM that day. Because this is across from the school, this location only affects driveway access for a very small number of residents.

We are looking into lots of other fun possibilities, including having the Denver Fire Department at the event, larger than life board games (think tic tac toe with giant x’s and o’s), and more.

WE NEED YOU!

If you would like to serve on the planning committee for the block party, or you can volunteer time for set up and break down afterwards, please contact us via email at [email protected]. Thanks for the help! WDHOA WINSTON DOWNS HOME OWNERS ASSOCIATION 4

Emerald Ash Borer

The emerald ash borer (EAB), a beetle that can infest and kill ash trees, has been detected in the Boulder. It has not yet been detected in Denver. This does not mean with certainty that it has entered Denver – it just has not been detected. There are about 1.45 million ash trees in Denver.

The Department of Agriculture is leading outreach on behalf of the Colorado EAB response team, which includes city and county governments, CSU, University of Colorado, the USDA and nonprofits, all of which are working together to track the spread of the EAB and develop and implement a response plan.

Many ash trees in Colorado are in poor condition. Pests such as lilac ash borer and the ash bark beetle are much more common than EAB. Symptoms of EAB infestation include:

 Thinning of leaves and upper branches and twigs;  Serpentine tunnels produced by larvae under the bark;  New sprouts on the lower branches or lower trunk;  Increased woodpecker activity For more information on EAB identification, reporting, management and planning visit www.eab.colorado.com or call 888-248-5535 WDHOA WINSTON DOWNS HOME OWNERS ASSOCIATION 7

criminals, but it will assure you that your neighbors are watching Good News – out for you and you will be watching out for them. I think we are all really lucky to live in such a great neighborhood. As the community around us changes, let’s not get lost in the Crime is Down shuffle. Reach out to new neighbors and introduce yourself. Say hello to fellow dog walkers on your walks. Get involved in the What can we all do next? Neighborhood Watch program, and take a pledge to look out for After a disturbing crime spree last Fall, we’re happy to report that one another. crime in our neighborhood is down dramatically! If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at 303- My name is Jerry Shustrin and I’ve been living here in Winston 321-1350. I’m here to help keep Winston Downs safe and secure! Downs for 23 years. Over the past year, I've watched our neighborhood begin to take on a really neat aspect to it as new families are moving in and current residents are getting out and about more. There’s a new lively aspect to life in Winston Downs where people are walking the streets, saying hello to folks whom they’ve never said hello to before. Bicycles, roller boards, skates and walking the dogs have taken on a new and exciting energy here and it’s really nice to see.

I’ve been following the crime statistics in our neighborhood for quite a few years and can say at this moment in time, there is a crime lull as when compared to the last few years. There were four home burglaries this past quarter. This is significantly lower than the crime rate last fall, but for me, it’s still four too many. Nonetheless, compared to six months ago, or one year ago, or two or more years ago, this is an improvement. Other types of crimes are also down significantly.

In February 2008, I survived an armed robbery in my house. Right after, I installed locks on my side gates and an expensive security system. In addition, I’ve made sure that my front porch, front lawn and rear patio lights are on digital timers. I also have timers on a number of lights within the house.

There are a lot of things you can do to your own home to deter crime. The HOA has sent out numerous articles on the subject, but a simple Google search will also give you great tips. The Denver Police Department recommends that, at the very least, you trim back bushes and trees so they don’t create a good place to hide. You can also install additional lighting on both the inside and outside of your house and even go so far as installing a security system.

The most important aspect to my own personal home security is paying attention to the happenings around my house and those of my neighbors. To that end, I highly encourage you to consider Sign Update getting together with your neighbors and creating a Neighborhood Our neighborhood signs have been fabricated and they look great! Watch. The Denver Police Department has a FREE ‘Neighborhood Soon they will be gracing the entranceways to our neighborhood. Watch’ program that is designed for this very purpose. All you need to do is talk to your neighbors and gather at least 60% of your block to participate. Then, contact the Denver Police Department Neighborhood Resource Officer Anthony Burkhardt by calling 720-913-1231 and let them know you would like to set up a ’Neighborhood Watch’ for your block. A DPD Community Officer will come to a block meeting that you set up and give a brief half hour presentation/question and answer session to the participants who have expressed interest in the watch program. This is a great opportunity for you to get together with your neighbors, exchange phone numbers and agree to watch out for one another. After that, the DPD will erect ‘Neighborhood Watch’ signs along your block and stickers for your windows. All of this will not only deter Many thanks to Andrea Haupert and everyone else who managed to get this done! WDHOA WINSTON DOWNS HOME OWNERS ASSOCIATION 8
