DISCOVERING OUR HISTORY
One Sunday in 2006, our son Kevin and his wife Kathy were navigating a trip from Lake Tahoe using an old map. Near the Sierra Foothills town of Placerville, they noticed the name “Skinner” on the map, and got curious. After checking with some local folks and getting some more information, he called us to share the discovery. After doing some digging of our own, we discovered that I am the great-great-great-grandson more about our ancestor’s thriving winery and pioneering role in the region, we were compelled to buy property, plant vines in the area and reclaim the family legacy. And so, Skinner Vineyards and Winery was born.
RESURRECTING THE LEGACY
In 2006, we bought a property a mile or so from the original Skinner Winery and started developing the site. We brought winemaker Chris Pittenger, formerly with Williams Selyem and Marcassin in Sonoma and Torbreck in Australia, on board the same year. We worked closely with Chris in planning the new Skinner Vineyards and Winery operation, creating a winemaking program that aims to honor our family history while respecting the wines of the Rhone Valley in France – the birthplace of the fruit we grow. We’ve also planted heirloom grape varietals once grown at the original winery, including rare cultivars that have been considered lost for decades. We foster their resurrection and the important place we believe they hold in the future of California wines.
