As such, this group of often-enigmatic arthropods offers unlimited and sometimes unparalleled opportunities to address fundamental questions in ecology, evolution, physiology, neurobiology, and behaviour (among others). Amblypygids (Order Amblypygi), for example, possess distinctly elongated walking legs covered with sensory hairs capable of detecting both airborne and substrate-borne chemical stimuli, as well as mechanoreceptive information. Simultaneously, they display an extraordinary central nervous system with distinctly large and convoluted higher order processing centres called mushroom bodies. -
First Record of Charinus Ioanniticus (Arachnida, Amblypygi: Charinidae) from Continental Europe

Amblypygids, commonly known as whip spiders, are one of the small orders of Arachnida with a global distribution in the tropical and subtropical regions. Amblypygids are essentially absent from temperate areas, with only three species known from the Western Palaearctic. Here, we expand the known distribution of Charinus ioanniticus (Kritscher, 1959) with a new record from Athens, Greece, which is the first time the species has been found in continental Europe. The new record could either be the result of accidental human transportation or the actual species distribution that is wider than previously expected. An updated map with the records of C. oanniticus is also provided. Keywords: Distribution, expansion, Greece, whip spiders Zusammenfassung. Erstnachweis von Charinus ioanniticus (Arachnida, Amblypygi: Charinidae) aus dem kontinentalen Europa. Amblypygi (Geißelspinnen) gehören zu den kleinen Ordnungen der Arachnida mit einer globalen Verbreitung in den Tropen und Sub- tropen. Geißelspinnen fehlen in den gemäßigten Regionen und sind nur mit drei Arten in der Westpaläarktis vertreten. Wie erweitern hiermit die bekannte Verbreitung der Art Charinus ioanniticus (Kritscher, 1959) durch neue Nachweise aus Athen, Griechenland, weisen die Art damit erstmals für das kontinentale Europa nach. Der Neunachweis kann entweder ein Resultat menschlicher (Waren)Transporte sein oder die Art ist weiter verbreitet als bisher erwartet. Assessing the patterns and drivers of shape complexity in the amblypygid pedipalp using elliptical Fourier analysis Callum McLean1, Russell Garwood2, and Charlotte Brassey1 1Manchester Metropolitan University 2The University of Manchester February 16, 2021 Abstract Amblypygids are an arachnid order possessing a unique pair of spined pedipalps: appendages that perform in prey capture, courtship and contest. Pedipalp length, hypothesised to be under sexual selection, varies markedly across amblypygid species, and pedipalp spination, thought to reflect selection for function in prey capture, also differs interspecifically. Differences in pedipalp shape between species may indicate that the relative strength of selection for prey capture and sexual selection vary across the group. However, interspecific differences in pedipalp shape have not been quantified, due to difficulties in identifying homologous features. For the first time, we quantify trends in amblypygid pedipalp shape complexity. We use elliptical Fourier analysis to quantify 2D complexity in pedipalp outlines across eleven species and six genera. We find that complexity significantly decreases as pedipalp length increases. This appears to be driven by relative spine length, suggesting that a trade- off exists between pedipalp length and spination. Furthermore, significant female-biased sexual dimorphism in shape complexity is present in the tibial segment of the amblypygid pedipalp. Our results provide novel insights into the drivers of amblypygid pedipalp evolution, and suggest that a functional trade-off between performance in prey capture and other functions under sexual selection exist in this enigmatic structure. E-mail: [email protected] 4Corresponding author Abstract: The genus Charinus is represented by 51 species, distributed in all tropical regions. Their small size allows them to use a wide range of micro-habitats, from caves, litter to insect nests. The new species C. sillami sp. nov. was found into termite nests of three different species: Neocapritermes taracua, Spinitermes sp. and Embiratermes neotenicus. Only Paracharon caecus (Paleoamblypygi: Paracharontidae) was previously known to be associated with Isoptera. Eleven spe- cies of Charinus were previously known from Northern South America. Charinus sillami sp. nov. is the second species of the genus occurring in French Guiana. An updated key of Northern South-American species is provided. Key words: taxonomy, whip spider, systematic, termites, Charinus sillami Introduction Whip spiders are secretive animals that feed on small animals they can capture with their spiny pedipalps. They live in dark habitats like caves, tree trunks or insect nests (termites or ants) (Weygoldt, 2000).
