    C a c h e V a l l e y V i s i t o r s B u r e a u Cache Valley HERITAGE DRIVING TOUR CACHE VALLEY driving tour Cache Valley extends more than 50 miles into the states of Utah and Idaho. Beautifully nestled among the steep slopes of the Bear River and Wellsville mountain ranges, the valley averages 4500 feet in elevation and is four to twelve miles in width. The surrounding high mountains, clear streams and productive soil all combine to make it a valley rich in the blessings of nature. Cache Valley was the scene of many events important in the settling of the American West. It was here that mountain Indian tribes found ample hunting ground for game, that rugged mountain men splashed through streams in search of beaver, and where Mormon pioneers built new homes in the wilderness of the American frontier. For centuries before the mountain men and the Mormons came to Cache Valley, Native Americans hunted, fished and gathered seeds from the grass that was plentiful upon the valley floor. These Native Americans, the Northwestern Shoshone, named the valley Seuhubeogoi, “Willow River,” and established both winter and summer camps along the major rivers. As nomadic hunters and gatherers they followed centuries-old migratory patterns in search of food. Famous Northwestern Shoshone leaders were Sagwitch, Bear Hunter, Pocatello, Pahvants, and Sanpitch. Mountain men in search of beaver were the first white visitors to Cache Valley.     ROCKPORT UTAH A BRIEF HISTORY AND PHOTOGRAPHS OF HOMES Edited and Compiled by Thomas E. Brown FORWARD Several years ago I was asked to speak at sacrament meeting program in the Peoa Ward. The Peoa members of the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers had planned the program and I was asked to speak about the pioneers in the valley. Since no one specifically asked me to speak about Peoa, I focused my remarks on my hometown of Rockport. Days were spent researching the subject. Books and documents in my possession provided a base, but additional information was needed. Much time was spent at the Church Historical Department reviewing documents and soon enough information had been collected to fill the assignment. After the meeting, several friends asked for copies of the talk. The information was not typed and it needed to be put together better. All this time I had a set of wonderful photographs showing the homes in Rockport taken by Florence Siddoway Walsh Hunter years before. The photos had been shown to friends who said they would like copies. Because of the interest in both the talk and the photos, I decided to get the history typed and the photos enlarged and labeled so they could be put together in some printed form. There may be misspelled names, wrong dates, incorrect information, omissions and a host of other problems with this document. Some problems may have existed in the materials I used and some may be of my own making. This is not a complete history in any sense of the word, but I hope you find some enjoyment and satisfaction in reviewing the history and the photos just as I have.

    County Commission Update: Protecting a Vital Natural Resource By Wade Mathews, Public Information Officer It’s a remnant of an ancient body of water that once covered most of our county and much of the western states region. Now the Great Salt Lake is all that remains of Lake Bonneville. Because of its unique mineral qualities, the Great Salt Lake, specifically its south arm, provides a valuable resource to our county. The lake’s minerals are utilized by several large businesses in Tooele County, it provides recreation opportunities, and the lake is a great tourist attraction to this area. But that resource that is the Great Salt Lake is being threatened. The Tooele County Commission has learned of a proposal by Great Salt Lake Minerals Corporation (GSL), located on the north side of the lake that has the potential of decreasing the level of the southern arm by six to 30 inches a year. GSL originally proposed withdrawing 360,000 acre feet of water per year from the north arm of the lake. Due to some criticism, GSL may reduce that request. The lake is already at historic low levels due to the past draught experienced in the region. Commissioner Jerry Hurst says, “GSL’s proposal could have a drastic effect on the operations of our businesses located along the southern shore. Five major companies and several small businesses rely on the lake being at a certain level and on having high salinity content.” Those major companies include Morton Salt, Cargill Salt, Broken Arrow, US Magnesium and Allegheny Technologies. They make up the Tooele County Great Salt Lake South Arm Industry Consortium.
