Bodmin Military Project

In January a project was started which involved pupils from 3 primary schools learning to play brass instruments through First Access. The project ran alongside the Regimental Museum in . The children were taught how to play brass instruments such as the cornet, trombone and euphonium but also learnt about military music. In the second term the children continued to learn to play the instruments, but were fortunate enough to pay a visit to the museum and they had a fantastic experience. The children also got to learn to sing wartime songs and learnt to play a few simple riffs which could be added to some modern music. On Thursday 20th June the pupils form the schools all came together for a fabulous concert in St Petroc’s church, Bodmin. We invited Town Band and Training Band who were inspirational for the children and parents. The schools represented at the concert were Bugle Junior School and Lanlivery Primary School. It was thanks to Mary Godwin for bringing the whole project together, and working on behalf of the Cornwall Music Education Hub, it was a pleasure to be involved I such an inspirational project. Hopefully some of those who were inspired will one day be members of our military bands and keep the long tradition of military music alive in our country!

First Access Training Day

The Cornwall Music Education Hub teamed up with the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire to offer a free training day for instrumental teachers who deliver whole class instrumental lessons on the 10th September. The day was led by Richard Shrewsbury, Jeremy Clay and George Kirkham from the Conservatoire’s Learning and Participation programme. The training explored linking the music curriculum with instrumental teaching and how to engage a whole class. Richard and his colleagues provided practical support including schemes of work and toolkits. The day was very well received by all participants and there was certainly lots of clapping, singing, body percussion and a chance for participants to play their own instruments in an improvised ensemble.

For over 40 years, musicians from across the globe have been visiting IMS Prussia Cove, drawn to the region by some of the most inspirational musicians of their time and the beauty of the Cornish landscape. For the last three years, musicians from IMS have been working with talented young musicians from the South West who together have been per- forming very successful and popular chamber music concerts in schools. On the morning of February 3rd 2020 the Inspiring Young Musicians chamber groups will be offering free concerts to Primary schools in the Bodmin/Blisland area. Focussing on Haydn’s ‘Sunrise’ Quartet and the first of Stravinsky’s Three Pieces for string quartet, schools will be provided with specially created videos for primary schools, and a series of free teaching plans. Presented as a collaboration between IMS Prussia Cove, MusicAbility CIC, South West Music School and CMEH.

If your school is interested in hosting a 50 minute concert for students on Monday 3rd February please email [email protected] before Friday 11 October. Home Educated Project This past term I have been working with a Home Educated group of children at Wheal Martyn. The children were aged between 3yrs and 12yrs old and there were approximately 20 in the group. Each week the children got to experience general musical skills through the use of instruments and their voices.

The favourite session was where I took in a load of brass instruments for them to all try; that was certainly the noisiest session we had. In other sessions we worked with body percussion, small classroom percussion, and also our voices. The children could also bring in their own instruments so we had spots where they could talk about their instrument and perform to everyone. Teaching such a wide age of children was challenging, however it was also extremely enjoyable! The children worked together to make sure everyone was included in the activities.

I certainly look forward to working with the children again at some point in the future. - Anna Minear

FUNDING FOR WHOLE CLASS INSTRUMENTAL LESSONS

Would you like your students to try out learning an instrument for free?

The Hub is able to offer grants to schools to fund a music specialist to deliver whole class instrumental lessons. The grants are available to fund a 12 week programme called First Access which aims to introduce students (and their teacher!) in Key Stages 1-3 to learning an instrument.

What does the programme consist of?  An initial planning meeting with the classroom teacher and music leader  10 weekly 45 minute whole class lessons (students should learn the same instrument each week).  A review meeting with the classroom teacher and music leader.

 The grants are available for any classes who have not previously benefitted from the scheme (schools can access for more than one class).  Schools choose the deliverer for the sessions and also source their own instruments.  The Hub can help with this as we have a list of teachers/ organisations who are able to deliver First Access and also sets of instruments which can be hired at the subsidised rate of £70 per set per term.
