Media Release For immediate release: 14:00 hours GMT, Thursday 3 March 2011 BRITTEN-PEARS FOUNDATION ANNOUNCES GRANTS OF $1,250,000 TOWARDS INTERNATIONAL EVENTS TO CELEBRATE BENJAMIN BRITTEN’S CENTENARY IN 2013. Today the Britten-Pears Foundation announced awards of grants totalling $1,250,000 (£775,000 or €915,000) towards opera productions, new commissions and other events to take place in celebration of the centenary of Benjamin Britten’s birth in 2013. Britten is now the third most performed opera composer of the 20th century (behind Puccini and Richard Strauss) and productions of his works are mounted all over the world. The Britten-Pears Foundation has made available substantial funding to support a limited number of new productions of operas in and around the centenary year. The aim has been to encourage productions of the less well-known operas or in places where Britten’s work was not so familiar. VOCAL COACHING REGULAR COACHES’ BIOGRAPHIES — SPRING 2020 Pianist NOBUKO AMEMIYA has built a reputation as a dynamic and versatile collaborator; her playing is described as “soaring with a thrilling panache, and then with great warmth and suppleness.” (Valley News, VT) Equally committed to opera, artsongs and instrumental chamber music, she traveled three continents to give recitals and concerts with numerous renowned conductors and soloists such as Seiji Ozawa, James Conlon, Brian Priestman, James Dunham, Colin Carr, Rober Spano, and Lucy Shelton. An enthusiastic advocate of new music, Ms. Amemiya has worked with today’s leading composers, including John Harbison, George Crumb, Bright Sheng, Oliver Knussen and George Benjamin. Her music festival appearances include Música da Figueira da Foz in Portugal, Britten-Pears Institute at Aldeburgh Music Festival, Festival de Musique Lausanne in Switzerland, Aspen Music Festival, and Tanglewood Music Center where she was awarded Tanglewood Hooton Prize, acknowledging the “extraordinary commitment of talent and energy.” Prizes and awards include “Vittorio Gui” in Florence, Italy, the Munich International Music Competition, Manhattan School of Music President’s Award and Aldeburgh Music Festival Grant. 800 Pupils Will Unite at Snape Maltings for This Year's Big Sing
800 pupils will unite at Snape Maltings for this year’s Big Sing Across the county (and the country!) schools have been learning this year’s collection of Friday Afternoons songs. Each year, Aldeburgh Music commissions new songs for the project, and this year American composer Nico Muhly has written a set of eight songs that can be sung year round, culminating with performances all over the world on Friday 20 November 2015. Inspired by Benjamin Britten, Friday Afternoons is a quality resource for children and young people, enabling them to explore singing as composer, performer and listener. All scores, lyrics, audio tracks and interactive resources from Charanga Music can be downloaded for free from the Friday Afternoons website. Are you singing? On Friday 20 November approximately round 800 school children will gather in Snape Maltings Concert Hall to learn and sing a collection of Friday Afternoons songs for the Big Sing event. This day will also present the premiere performance of the winning composition of this year’s Britten Young Songwriter Competition. Are any of your pupils budding composers? In June, schools across the county participated in the Suffolk County Music Service’s Whole Class Ensemble Teaching Celebration, where they worked on From A Railway Carriage with Tracey Rayner (Suffolk County Music Service), Megan Peel (Aldeburgh Music) and other County Music Service tutors. George Benjamin Born in 1960, George Benjamin began composing at the age of seven. In 1976 he entered the Paris Conservatoire to study with Messiaen, after which he worked with Alexander Goehr at George Benjamin King's College, Cambridge. When he was only 20 years old, Ringed by the Flat Horizon was played at the BBC Proms by the BBC Symphony Orchestra under Mark Elder. The London & Sinfonietta and Simon Rattle premiered At First Light two years later. Antara was commissioned Martin Crimp for the 10th anniversary of the Pompidou Centre in 1987 and Three Inventions was written for the 75th Salzburg Festival in 1995. The London Symphony Orchestra under Pierre Boulez premiered Palimpsests in 2002 to mark the opening of ‘By George’, a season-long portrait which included the first performance of Shadowlines by Pierre-Laurent Aimard. More recent celebrations of Benjamin’s work have taken place at the Southbank Centre in 2012 (as part of the UK’s Cultural Olympiad), at the Barbican in 2016 and at the Wigmore Hall in 2019. The last decade has also seen multi-concert retrospectives in San Francisco, Frankfurt, Turin, Milan, Aldeburgh, Toronto, Dortmund, New York and at the 2018 Holland Festival. Benjamin’s first operatic work Into the Little Hill, written with playwright Martin Crimp, was commissioned in 2006 by the Festival d'Automne in Paris. Their second collaboration, Written on Skin, premiered at the Aix-en-Provence festival in July 2012, has since been scheduled by over 20 international opera houses, winning as many international awards. Lessons in Love and Violence, a third collaboration with Martin Crimp, premiered at the Royal Opera House in 2018; both works were filmed by BBC television, and a related ’Imagine’ profile on Benjamin was broadcast on BBC1 in October 2018. -

David Fulmer will conduct the works by Lunsqui, Grisey, Fujikura, and Chin. Ligeti Forward will take place approximately ten years after Ligeti’s death on June 12, 2006. Many of these composers have been featured in CONTACT!, the Philharmonic’s new-music series. -
