Some Comments on the Ascidians of New Caledonia Franroise MONNIOT Museum National D'histoire Naturelle Lab Plates 14/1 & 14/2 Some comments on the Ascidians of New Caledonia Franroise MONNIOT Museum national d'histoire naturelle Lab. Biologie des illvertebres marins et malacologie, 57, Rue Cl/vier 75005 PARIS monniot@mnhnJr The large exploration program focussed on the littoral marine fauna of New Caledonia (SNOM SMIB - LAGON) demonstrated the great diversity of ascidians and considerably increased the num ber of identified species. In addition to this program, conducted in cooperation with the MNHN, sev eral other oceanographic programs have, in turn, examined the fauna of the continental slope sur rounding New Caledonia. The results from the examination of the samples collected by divers and from dredges have been published in several papers dating from 1987 onwards by Claude and Fran~oise Monniot. These authors have described 229 littoral species and 88 deep water species from more than lOOm depth, of which numerous were new species. The collections are catalogued at the MNHN. Only two publications dating from before 1987 are known for New Caledonian ascidians: 1'. Tokioka (1961) who examined 14 species collected from the Aquarium in Noumea and from the hull of a boat; and from P. Vasseur (1967) who cites 12 species from the area surrounding Noumea. Adding one species described by Pruvot-Fol in 1929 and the deep water species noted by Millar in 1975, this gives a total of 22 species. The list of species attached shows the great diversity of genera, with all the important families being represented. The order Aplousobranchia (colonial ascidians) dominates in the littoral forms. similar to that observed in other tropical environments. Within this order, the Didemnidae are particularly difficult to identify and consequently, many rest unidentified. The order Stolidobranchia, which are majorly solitary, the Styelidea is the dominant in terms of number of species. as is the case in other paIts of the world. The knowledge to date of the fauna of Ascidicolia in the Tropical west Pacific is insufficient enough to determine if there are endemic species in New Caledonia, this is even more complicated considering the facility with which these species can be transported on boats. Around 50% of the species presently identified are found on the East Australian coast. A few of the species are found in New Zealand, for which there is little information. At present, species collection by divers is on the increase however, the lack of specialists in the field slows the identification process. The ascidians of New Caledonia are far from totally inventoried. At present. most of the collections come from the south and none from the coral walls. Many of the samples collected were either not mature or were too contracted to permit identification. Moreover, many species are too small or too cryptic and as a consequence have been ignored. The affinities of the deeper water ascidians vary as a function of their family and their types of adap tation. They are gencrally similar to the fauna from thc deep water species from temperatc systems. There is no relation between the surface water species and the deep water species, even though some of the deep watcr species can be found in depths of Icss than 100 m. Photographs of Invertebrate Megafauna from Abyssal Depths of the North-Eastern Equatorial Pacific Ocean" ERIC J. FOELL, Marine Science Department, Deepsea Ventures Inc., Gloucester Point, VA 23062 DAVID L. PAWSON, Department of Invertebrate Zoology, National Museum of Natural History, Smithsonian Institution, Washington, DC 20560 ABSTRACT. A series of RV PROSPECTOR cruises to survey ferromanganese nodule deposits at depths of 4000-5200 meters in the Clarion-Clipperton Fracture Zone of the north-eastern equatorial Pacific Ocean resulted in the acquisition of over 70,000 seafloor images. Real-time television, coupled with 35-mm remote- controlled still photography, revealed a conspicuous epibenthic invertebrate megafauna of more than 70 species. Approximately 38 species are echinoderms. Porifera and Cnidaria are each represented by approxi- mately 12 species. Several molluscs and arthropods, a bryozoan, a hemichordate, and an ascidian urochordate constitute the remainder. Although there has been increasing international commercial interest in developing the economic potential of the region, knowledge of the faunal elements present remains very limited. Many of the non-echinoderm megafauna from this increasingly important area are illustrated here in seafloor photographs. Several taxa are new to science; others represent new locality records or depth range extensions. Comments are given on systematic status, geographic and bathymetric distribution, and living habits of selected species. OHIO J. SCI. 86 (3) 061-068, 1986 INTRODUCTION (Andrews et al. 1983). Culeolus herdmani Sluiter, 1904 (Ascidiacea, Tunicata) from the northwestern Australian continental slope with an overview of the genus Patricia Kott Queensland Museum, PO Box 3300, South Brisbane Queensland 4101, Australia Abstract - Thirteen specimens of Culeolus herdmani Sluiter, 1904 (Ascidiacea, Tunicata) taken at 3 locations on the northwestern Australian continental slope (between 408m and 550m and 14°16.8'S and 16°09.5'S) are the first records of this genus from Australian waters. The species is one of 7 Culeolus spp. recorded at depths of 1800m or less. The newly recorded specimens generally resemble the type specimen and others from the Philippines, Japan and New Caledonia, although there are some differences in the number of branchial folds, length of stalk, presence of a long ventral branchial tentacle and. mid-ventral papillary crest and interruption of the postero-Iateral paplllary. crest over the dorsal mid-line. Included in this account is a key to the speCIes of the genus and a table summarising their distribution and characters INTRODUCTION on species relationships can be obtained from the The genus Culeolus (Pyuridae, Stolidobranchia) gonads, although in some cases these have not been was erected by Herdman (1881) for 5 species taken described; and because relatively few specimens are by HMS Challenger from depths of 4000 to 5798 m available in most of the known taxa, variations in in the Pacific (off Japan, in the tropics and the South the number and arrangement of the gonads and Pacific) and the Atlantic Oceans.

  • Ascidiacea Ascidiacea
ASCIDIACEA ASCIDIACEA The Ascidiacea, the largest class of the Tunicata, are fixed, filter feeding organisms found in most marine habitats from intertidal to hadal depths. The class contains two orders, the Enterogona in which the atrial cavity (atrium) develops from paired dorsal invaginations, and the Pleurogona in which it develops from a single median invagination. These ordinal characters are not present in adult organisms. Accordingly, the subordinal groupings, Aplousobranchia and Phlebobranchia (Enterogona) and Stolidobranchia (Pleurogona), are of more practical use at the higher taxon level. In the earliest classification (Savigny 1816; Milne-Edwards 1841) ascidians-including the known salps, doliolids and later (Huxley 1851), appendicularians-were subdivided according to their social organisation, namely, solitary and colonial forms, the latter with zooids either embedded (compound) or joined by basal stolons (social). Recognising the anomalies this classification created, Lahille (1886) used the branchial sacs to divide the group (now known as Tunicata) into three orders: Aplousobranchia (pharynx lacking both internal longitudinal vessels and folds), Phlebobranchia (pharynx with internal longitudinal vessels but lacking folds), and Stolidobranchia (pharynx with both internal longitudinal vessels and folds). Subsequently, with thaliaceans and appendicularians in their own separate classes, Lahille's suborders came to refer only to the Class Ascidiacea, and his definitions were amplified by consideration of the position of the gut and gonads relative to the branchial sac (Harant 1929). Kott (1969) recognised that the position of the gut and gonads are linked with the condition and function of the epicardium. These are significant characters and are informative of phylogenetic relationships. However, although generally conforming with Lahille's orders, the new phylogeny cannot be reconciled with a too rigid adherence to his definitions based solely on the branchial sac.

  • Davidson Seamount Taxonomic Guide
Marine Sanctuaries Conservation Series ONMS-08-08 Davidson Seamount Taxonomic Guide U.S. Department of Commerce National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration National Ocean Service Office of Ocean and Coastal Resource Management Office of National Marine Sanctuaries December 2008 About the Marine Sanctuaries Conservation Series The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Office of National Marine Sanctuaries (ONMS) administers the National Marine Sanctuary Program. Its mission is to identify, designate, protect and manage the ecological, recreational, research, educational, historical, and aesthetic resources and qualities of nationally significant coastal and marine areas. The existing marine sanctuaries differ widely in their natural and historical resources and include nearshore and open ocean areas ranging in size from less than one to over 5,000 square miles. Protected habitats include rocky coasts, kelp forests, coral reefs, sea grass beds, estuarine habitats, hard and soft bottom habitats, segments of whale migration routes, and shipwrecks. Because of considerable differences in settings, resources, and threats, each marine sanctuary has a tailored management plan. Conservation, education, research, monitoring and enforcement programs vary accordingly. The integration of these programs is fundamental to marine protected area management. The Marine Sanctuaries Conservation Series reflects and supports this integration by providing a forum for publication and discussion of the complex issues currently facing the National Marine Sanctuary Program. Topics of published reports vary substantially and may include descriptions of educational programs, discussions on resource management issues, and results of scientific research and monitoring projects. The series facilitates integration of natural sciences, socioeconomic and cultural sciences, education, and policy development to accomplish the diverse needs of NOAA’s resource protection mandate.
