The term is deployed for work that acknowledges the interconnectedness and inseparability of humans and other life forms, and thus seeks to extend ethnography beyond the solely human realm. Multispecies investigations of social and cultural phenomena are attentive to the agency of other­than­human species, whether they are plants, animals, fungi, bacteria, or even viruses, which confound the species concept. This entails a challenge to the humanist epistemology upon which conventional ethnography is predicated, specifically its ontological distinctions between nature and culture, human and nonhuman, subject and object. Multispecies ethnography must thus be seen as a part of a larger quest in the social sciences and humanities to replace dualist ontologies by relational perspectives, to overcome anthropocentrism by pointing to the meaningful agency of nonhuman others, and to highlight the intersections between ecological relations, political economy, and cultural representations. Multispecies ethnography however, not only acknowledges that humans dwell in a world necessarily comprising other life forms but also contends that their entanglements with human lives, landscapes, and technologies must be theoretically integrated into any account of existence. The authors of this article wish to thank Eben Kirksey, Thom van Dooren, and two anonymous reviewers. General Overviews A concern with the constitutive significance of other­than­human species and with new approaches to understanding cross­species intersections characterizes a recent “multispecies turn” in anthropology and related disciplines. A number of journal special issues have emerged that are establishing this emerging subfield. Kirksey and Helmreich 2010 defines the term “multispecies ethnography,” outlines its theoretical and methodological characteristics, and assembles a selection of foundational articles. Livingston and Puar 2011 introduces a selection of scholarly reflections framed around the rubric of “interspecies,” which explores the involvement of nonhuman species in multiple aspects of human life. Latimer and Miele 2013 focuses on the affective dimension of interspecies relations in science and society, assembling articles that problematize conceptual distinctions between human and animal, nature, and culture. Lestel and Taylor 2013 reminds us that human life is constituted not in opposition to but through interdependence with other life forms, featuring articles that encourage us to think differently about life, death, and animality. Feinberg, et al. 2013 challenges human exceptionalism through new ways of thinking about human­animal relations, while in the same issue Ogden, et al. 2013 charts the formative influences upon and recent developments in multispecies ethnography. The authors note that social theory has expanded to include nonhuman beings as the anthropogenic power of humanity becomes increasingly evident. They consider the implications of challenging human exceptionalism and the consequences of exercising power over life and death. Kirksey, S. Eben, and Stefan Helmreich. 2010. The emergence of multispecies ethnography. Cultural Anthropology 25.4: 545–576. This is the first text to name an approach to ethnography seeking to epistemologically recontextualize the human in relation to other life forms. Introducing work combining posthumanist and actor­network perspectives, it reveals an emerging sensibility rather than outlining a programmatic agenda. Latimer, Joanna, and Mara Miele. 2013. Naturecultures? Science, affect and the non­human. Theory, Culture & Society 30.7: 5–31. This special issue is concerned with overcoming the constructed discontinuities between humans and other animals, focusing on the affective dimensions of interspecies relations. Articles in the collection variously track intersections through history and animal welfare science, knowledges of “nature,” and the choreographies of everyday life involving horses, meerkats, mice, and wolves. Lestel, Dominique, and Hollis Taylor. 2013. Shared life: An introduction. Social Science Information 52.2: 183–186. An issue that theoretically and empirically deals with the “shared life” of humans and other animals. Reminding us of our own animality as humans, the authors point to human convergence with animals at an existential and metabolic level, through “modes of consumption” and “interspecies hospitality.” Livingston, Julie, and Jasbir K. Puar 2011. Interspecies. Social Text 29.1: 3–14. This introduction presents “interspecies” scholarship drawing primarily on animal studies and posthumanism to analyze relationships between various forms of biosocial life and their political outcomes. The authors highlight the insights that critical race studies and postcolonial studies add to the study of human­nonhuman relations. Ogden, Laura, Billy Hall, and Kimiko Tanita. 2013. Animals, plants, people, and things: A review of multispecies ethnography. Concerned with de­centering the human, and attentive to the “asymmetrical becomings” of human­nonhuman assemblages, the authors suggest multispecies ethnography brings about “speculative wonder.” Pouliot, Alison, and John Charles Ryan. 2013. Fungi: An entangled exploration. PAN: Philosophy Activism Nature 10:1–5. This introduction to human­fungi intersections surveys articles spanning a remarkable diversity of disciplines from the arts, humanities, as well as the social and natural sciences. Articles consider the full range of fungal forms in relation to human attitudes, practices, and literary works, ecological entanglement, cohabitation and connectivity, citizen science, and more. Foundational Texts Multispecies ethnography has recently emerged as a new kind of anthropological writing and inquiry. Different scholarly traditions feed this young, interdisciplinary, and dynamic field. It thus remains an open question which publications will acquire enduring significance for multispecies research. However, a number of recent works can be considered exemplary for persuading us of the need to extend social theory and ethnographic research beyond the human. Even before the “multispecies turn,” Murdoch 1997 employs actor­ network theory to incorporate the agency of nonhumans and to achieve naturalcultural symmetry in ethnography. The author of Despret 2013 acts as an observer of ethologists in order to explore the possibilities of a more reciprocal and embodied way of producing knowledge about animals’ lives and behaviors. Kohn 2007 offers the author’s idea of “an anthropology of life” to argue that a focus on semiosis, processes inherent to all forms of life, will lead us to a more encompassing understanding of life itself. Fuentes and Kohn 2012 makes two proposals: a proposal for an “anthropology beyond the human” that investigates the embeddedness of all human life in multispecies relations, and a proposal for using the concept of ecological niche construction to understand the entangled life of humans and nonhumans. Sagan 2011 opens up multispecies and symbiogenetic perspectives on our evolution and ecological becoming. Nading 2013 brings insights from medical anthropology to multispecies inquiry and shows how humans and nonhuman species are entangled through disease. Paxson and Helmreich 2013 marks the beginning of a recent “microbial turn” in multispecies ethnography and science and technology studies (STS), showing how changes in the perception of microbes have far­reaching political, ecological, and social consequences. Ingold 2013, on the other hand, rejects the term “multispecies ethnography,” and proposes an “anthropology beyond humanity” based on a phenomenological

    FROM THE INSTRUCTOR In his prize-winning essay, “Hwa-Byung: The “Han”-Blessed Illness,” Wooyoung Cho taps a global skill set to shed new light on how culture shapes definitions of mental illness. His paper is an outstanding example of student-driven inquiry. I had never heard of the Korean culture-bound mental illness called hwa-byung when Wooyoung proposed this project. But even if I had, I would’ve had no idea where to find narratives about hwa-byung written by young men, let alone be able to translate them from Korean. (Are you curious yet?) In his research, Wooyoung learned that scholarly studies of hwa-byung have focused on middle-aged women and interpreted their symptoms as reflections of Korea’s patriarchal social structure. When he discovered that today more young men are being diagnosed with hwa-byung, he wanted to understand the social causes of their distress. One way he gathered evidence was by searching a Korean online forum and reading posts by young men about their hwa-byung experiences. When students in Marisa Milanese’s “Global Documentary” class read a draft of Wooyoung’s essay in a cross-section peer review exercise, they were understandably skeptical about his methodology. They asked for “a clearer understanding of why analyzing narratives is a credible method to gain insight into this illness.” Wooyoung responded with a revision that provided the theoretical framework necessary to explain the kind of authority those anonymous online posts have in the context of his project. He was wise to listen carefully to his readers.

In addition, it is unknown whether these samplers could be used to assess microbial inhalation exposure according to the particle sampling conventions. This research analyzed collection efficiencies of MAS-100, Microflow, SMA MicroPortable, Millipore Air Tester, SAS Super 180, BioCulture, and RCS High Flow portable microbial samplers when sampling six bacterial and fungal species ranging from 0.61 to 3.14mm in aerodynamic diameter. The efficiencies with which airborne microorganisms were deposited on samplers’ collection medium were compared to the particle inhalation and lung deposition convention curves. When sampling fungi, RCS High Flow and SAS Super 180 deposited 80%–90% ofairborne spores on agar F highest among investigated samplers. Other samplers showed collection efficiencies of 10%–60%. When collecting bacteria, RCS High Flow and MAS-100 collected 20%–30%, whereas other samplers collected less than 10% ofthese bioparticles. Comparison ofsamplers’ collection efficiencies with particle inhalation convention curves showed that RCS High Flow and SAS Super 18 0 could be used to assess inhalation exposure to particles larger than 2.5 mm, such as fungal spores.

    U20145 CULTURE AND CARE INTRODUCTION This module examines care as one of the most fundamental adaptive strategies for human survival and social flourishing, providing a counterpoint to anthropological accounts that focus on conflict, friction, and violence. The central claim that we will investigate and question over the course is that care has been fundamental to the enhancement of human biosocial evolution and continues to be central as we consider ways to enhance our future. Though fundamental (or because it is fundamental) care has taken on a variety of cultural meanings, structuring social relations from the intimate to the global. Who is deserving of care? When does care of another supersede self-care? Do I have a right to care? Does this right include a right to sex or death? Some of the most important questions about human wellbeing revolve around care. Ethical debates about how to treat socially marginal, non-productive, and vulnerable groups (the sick and disabled, the elderly, children, orphans, immigrants and displaced persons, etc.), for example, depend on deeply invested cultural norms and assumptions surrounding care; if we are to join these debates, we need to be able to critically examine the idea, practice, and felt experience of care. This course begins by examining the evolution of our uniquely human capacity for care, including the neurobiological, emotional, and social adaptations that support empathy and cooperation. Next, we look at moral and ethical dimensions of care as expressed rituals of religious devotion and healing. Third, we look at modern caring institutions and how care has become linked to citizenship, education and welfare.

In this regard, context-oriented approach is one of the most common view points in architecture that assumes context as a historical and cultural event. In contextual architecture, purely physical dimensions were taken into primary accounts. Gradually, however, the focus was expanded to include human aspects like culture and socio-cultural dimensions of the society. In this article, we attempt to evaluate the manner of bio- culture recreation progress with approach of contextual architecture, by referring to its concepts and dimensions of concepts and thus it can provide a context that lead to promotion of the popular rich cultures interactions. This is believed that it can make preparations for a context where peoples’ cultural interactions.

But for more than 30 years, as Theory has established itself as “the new hegemony in literary studies” (to echo the title of Tony Hil- fer’Ws cogent critique), university literature departments in the English-speak- ing world have often done their best to stifle this thoroughly human emotion. Every year, heavy hitters in the academic literary world sum up the state of the discipline in the Modern Language Association of America’s annual, Profession. In Profession 2005, Louis Menand, Harvard English professor, Pulitzer Prize-winning author, and New Yorker essayist, writes that university literature departments “could use some younger people who think that the grownups got it all wrong.” He has no hunch about what they should say his generation got wrong, but he deplores the absence of a challenge to the reign- ing ideas in the discipline. He laments the “culture of conformity” in pro- fessors and graduate students alike. He notes with regret that the profession “is not reproducing itself so much as cloning itself.” But then, curiously, he insists that what humanities departments should definitely not seek is “consilience, which is a bargain with the devil.” Con- silience, in biologist E. The enrolment of farm animals as actors in political agendas for environmental sustainability, and farm animal welfare suggests that there are new ways of seeing and being with farm animals that permit their relational presence and recognise their subjectivity. Indeed geographers have in recent years acknowledged animals and their relations with humans, and they have begun to recognise the nature of animal subjectivies. However, within the fundamental rethinking of animals that has been provoked by these discussions, I suggest that farm animals have remained relatively invisible. Occupying ethically confusing terrain, farm animals have nonetheless been visible in a set of philosophical positions regarding their moral status, yet these debates present a rather confusing picture in which the farm animal as an individual is conspicuous by its absence. In seeking to redress the invisibility of farm animals within these debates, and recast them in relation to humans and the broader farm ecology, this thesis attempts to set out an epistemological and methodological framework through which farm animals might become visible as individual fleshy beings.
