Ruabon WI News The September meeting of the WI was held last Wednesday and it was a very happy and pleasant evening. The speaker, Sarah Hill, told us how she came to be an artist and designer in coloured glass and I think it fair to say that members were enchanted to see the wonderful colours and the play of light on the samples she brought to the meeting.

During August, many members competed in the Flint and Denbigh Agricultural Show and we were pleased to be told that Denbigh (of which Ruabon is a part) won the Cup for most entries. A lot of us enjoyed an outing by coach to Ludlow and then to Charlie's in Welshpool.

In October, the AGM will be held when perhaps new members will join the Committee, and so begins another year of warm and friendly gatherings. Anyone who would like to join with us in our activities would be warmly welcomed.

The MacMillan Coffee Morning held at St Michael’s Close on the 5th September was a special event with a wonderful load of raffle prizes; beautiful food and (as always) a friendly atmosphere. The amount raised was £230 for this charity, which affects so many people’s lives. Margaret Williams, President of Ruabon WI, wishes to congratulate all those members who worked so hard to bring about this event and to thank the residents of St Michael’s Close including Dave and Claire, who manage the facility, for all the support given to WI members on these occasions. 4

The first Partnership meeting of 2019 took place at the Guildhall in Wrexham 12

on 19th February when funding partners and stakeholders came together.

We are currently working on updating our Terms of Reference and Constitution to reflect the new working partnership with Transport for Wales Rail Services and Network Rail both joining the Partnership Steering Group.

We are guided by the new Community Rail Strategy from the Department for Transport which was revised in late 2018 and the Partnerships 2019/2021 Line Activity Plan reflects the outputs we aim to work as a Partnership to achieve.

New Rail Service to Liverpool Lime Street and Liverpool South Parkway for Liverpool Airport

In May this year Transport for Wales Rail Services introduced a new rail service following the reopening of the Halton Curve. It’s over 40 years since a direct service ran from Wrexham to Liverpool but over the past 15 years Liverpool has been consistently in the top two destinations passengers visit from this area. This new service also stops at Liverpool South Parkway – the airport station.

Whilst initially only two direct services operate from Wrexham General more will follow.

From Chester there is an hourly service with the Transport for Wales trains stopping at Liverpool South Parkway, the railway station for Liverpool John Lennon Airport before continuing on to Liverpool Lime Street. Passengers wishing to go on to the airport can find bus services running every few minutes from the station forecourt. The bus journey into the airport takes around 10-15 minutes.
