The lyrics convey a request to Mr. Sandman to bring me a dream - a traditional association with a folklore figure, a sandbox. The pronoun used to refer to the desired sleep often changes depending on the sex of the singer or band, performing the song as the original edition of the note, which includes male and female versions of the texts intended. Recording of the song by became a hit in many countries in 1981. Von Von Monroe with the orchestra was the first to record a song in 1954. It was released as the B-side They Were Doin' mambo, on the RCA Victor label as the catalog number 20-5767 / 47-5767. In December 1954, the song reached No. 1 in the Cash Box Top 50, in tandem with versions of Chordettes, Four Aces, Buddy Morrow, Vaughn Monroe, Les Elgart, Lancers and Song Singers, with chords and versions of Four Aces. It also reached No. 1 on the Cash Box chart for The Nation's Ten Juke Box Tunes, in the same tandem ranking, and No.1 on the Box Cash chart for The Ten Records Disk Jockeys Played Most This Week, and only the Chordettes version was listed initially, but later in the tandem chordettes and four aces. The song also reached Number 1 on Billboard's Honor Roll of Hits, with chords and versions of Four Aces listed as bestsellers, and peaked at number 12 on the Billboard Top Tunes of 1955 by Honor Roll of Hits. The progression of chords in each choir follows the circle of fifths through a long series of secondary dominant chords (VII7, III7, VI7, II7, V7, Imaj7). The chordettes were released on Cadence Records. The founder of Cadence, Archie Bleier, was the orchestra conductor on the record and provided a rhythmic rhythm on the record using his knees. Is Bleier's voice heard in the third verse when he says the word Yes? Mo Wechsler plays the piano. The name Liberace is mentioned for his wavy hair, 11 and glissando (flourish common in his music) immediately follows. Pagliacci mentioned with a lonely heart, which is a reference to the opera by Pagliacci Ruggiero Leoncavallo. In the United States, the single Chordettes reached No. 1 on all three billboard music charts and ranked number nine in the 1955 Top Pop Records list as Voters in the Cash Box Poll. NashvilleSongwriter (s)Pat BallardProducer (s)Brian In January 1978, Emmylou Harris, and Linda Ronstadt recorded a version of the song for a planned trio album, which was eventually canceled. (Three eventually reunite and release the first of the trio's two albums nearly a decade later in 1987). Harris included a recording of the trio Mr. Sandman on her 1981 album Evangeline, though with the caveat that it would not be released as a single (given that Parton and Ronstadt were both associated with other record labels). However, when Harris later changed her mind and wanted to release the song as a single, she re-recorded it, and she sang all three parts herself, and released it in 1981 under the title Mister Sandman. The single peaked at number 10 on the Billboard Hot Country Singles and number 37 on the Billboard Hot 100, making it Harris's only single to reach the top 40 on the chart. Harris' single version did not appear on the album until after the 1984 compilation album Profile II: The Best of Emmylou Harris.
