THUNDERBIRD FOOTBALL 2010s ALL-DECADE TEAM The decade of the 2010’s can best be described as one of national recognition and resurgence, as the Thunderbirds returned to both Hardy Cup and championship glory. With 34-victories and 3 consecutive Hardy Cup finals, the talented T-birds dominated Canada west in post season awards including 53-Academic all-Canadians, 45-players invited to the CFL combine, 34-conference all-Stars, 27-players invited to the East-West bowl, 24-CIS/USport all-Canadians, and 6-major player of the year awards.

2015 Vanier Cup Champions: With a strong returning roster led by all-Canadians Quinn vanGylswyk (P/K), Alec Pennell (OT), Marcus Davis (KR/REC), Terrell Davis an Arizona State transfer (RB/LB), the T-Birds were primed for a great season. Coach Nill quickly added a talented crop of blue-chip prospects including Penn State transfer Michael O’Connor (QB), Trivel Pinto (REC/KR), Boise State transfer Taylor Loffler (FS), Connor Griffiths (DT), Stavros Katsantonis (HB) Nevada transfer Malcom Lee (REC/DB), SFU transfer Mitch Barnett (LB), CJFL all-Canadian Dylan Chapdelaine (LB) and Ben Cummings (REC/RB).

The first look at the new talent came during an exhibition game against the , in Quebec city. UBC came out with an impressive 41-16 win led by QB- Michael O’Connor, combined with the power running of Brendon Deschamps and a relentless defensive unit. After a season opening loss against the Dino's, the T-Birds return to Thunderbird Stadium to over 7,000 homecoming fans. It was a very close game in all three phases, as they defeated the 27-20. Following the home opener, the T-Birds beat the Manitoba Bison's on the road before dropping to a veteran Husky team. Coach Nill made some strategic positional moves to bolster the line of scrimmage that led to a four game winning streak. They finished with a 6-2 final season conference record and placed second in the competitive Canada West.

After four straight wins, the motivated T-Birds crushed the Manitoba Bison's 52-10 in the CW semi-final with another outstanding defensive performance and advanced to the Hardy Cup final. Next was a trip to Calgary to face the number one ranked football team in the country. The Dino’s had all the advantages; a veteran team, home stadium, most all-Stars, and playoff experience. But, it was not enough as UBC exploded for 475-yards on offence and came out with an incredible 34-26 victory to stun the entire nation. The Thunderbirds went on to defeat the AUS champion St. Francis Xavier X-Men 33-9 in the to earn their ticket to the Vanier Cup. There, they would face the defending national champion Carabins. This proved to be one of the best games in championship history coming down to the final minutes of play. With 1.19 seconds left in the game defensive backs Kevin Wiens and A.J Blackwell combined to deflect, then intercept the ball to set up a final offensive drive. With 1-second left on the clock vanGylswyk kicked a 20- yard field goal to win the CUP. The 26-23 victory successfully returned UBC to championship status. The playoff run was one to remember as coach Steve Buratto’s offence dominated each opponent with 477-yards vs. Manitoba, 465-yards vs. the X-men, and 506-yards vs. Montreal. The defence was aggressive stopping the country’s most explosive teams. Goal-line stands, swarming coverages and a blitzing front creating four turnovers per game. The final playoff numbers included 11-tackles for loss, 10-interceptions, 9-forced fumbles and 9-QB sacks.

The playoff run was a total team effort, the cast of players who made key plays on coach Paul Orazietti’s special teams included; Tanner Friesen, Kevin Wiens, Chris Adams, Kyle Miller, Warren Reece and Evan Horton. Kicker Quinn vanGylswyk was 17 of 19 on field goals and averaged over 44-yards per punt with a game high 49.2 average vs. Manitoba. The return game consistently changed field position for the T-Birds as Trivel Pinto and Marcus Davis combined for over 350-yards in the 4-games.

The following years showed how talented this team was with an incredible: 18-future CFL players, 16-conference all-Stars, 9-Usport all- Canadians, 7-NFL rookie camp try-outs, 5-CFL free-agents and 2-NFL free-agents.
