  • Every Medium Has Got Its Game Face on for 2006
EVERY MEDIUM HAS GOT ITS GAME FACE ON FOR 2006. Even the traditional media that find themselves facing competi- tion on multiple fronts are upbeat about the new year. Whether it’s net- w o r k television—still the big daddy of delivering marke t e r s’ messages to the masses—bullishly forecasting a solid year of growth or the bat- tered radio industry pulling itself up by the bootstraps as it prepares to t a ke on a hot competitor, all major media foresee a year of gains. It’s clear that not everyone will grow, though, thanks to the return of the Internet as a viable media option and the explosion in customized, personalized, portable new-media alternatives (some of which are even being embraced by old media). Individually, these new interactive devices and concepts won’t siphon away a ton of ad dollars (OK, Google and Yahoo! might), but together they could drain significant enough ad dollars from traditional media that some of the old-school- ers (read: print) will find themselves thirsty for more revenue at the end of the year. We’ve entered the era of “me” media, where consumers exert far more control over their content diet than ever before. And all media are trying to embrace that reality in their own ways. Some, particularly the interactive segment, enjoy a clear advantage. But even magazines, by creating digital versions of themselves, and radio, with HD radio, are opening new avenues of media consumption that beckon to the growing millions of control freaks out there.

The California Historical Radio Society (CHRS), is a non-profit educational corporation chartered in the State of California. CHRS was formed in 1974 to promote the restoration and preservation of early radio and broadcasting. Our goal is to enable the exchange of ideas and information on the history of radio, particularly in the West, with emphasis on collecting, preserving, and displaying early equipment, literature, and programs. Yearly membership is $30. CHRS Museum at Historic KRE CHRS is fortunate to occupy and restore the historic KRE radio station building located at 601 Ashby Avenue in Berkeley, CA. The KRE station an important landmark in S.F. Bay Area radio history. Orig- inally constructed in 1937, the KRE station was one of the first facilities built in California specifically for broadcasting. The KRE site has been transmitting AM radio signals for over 70 years and still operates today as KVTO. In 1972, it was the location for scenes featuring “Wolfman Jack” and Richard Dreyfuss in the George Lucas film, “American Graffiti.” The restoration of the station plus creation of a museum and educational center gives us an environment to share our knowledge and love of radio. It enables us to create an appreciation and understanding for a new generation of antique radio collectors and historians. A major critique of the genre is that it simply represents an adolescent male power fantasy; and presents a world view that valorises masculinist individualism.

UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA RIVERSIDE Uncertain Satire in Modern Chinese Fiction and Drama: 1930-1949 A Dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Comparative Literature by Xi Tian August 2014 Dissertation Committee: Dr. Perry Link, Chairperson Dr. Paul Pickowicz Dr. Yenna Wu Copyright by Xi Tian 2014 The Dissertation of Xi Tian is approved: Committee Chairperson University of California, Riverside ABSTRACT OF THE DISSERTATION Uncertain Satire in Modern Chinese Fiction and Drama: 1930-1949 by Xi Tian Doctor of Philosophy, Graduate Program in Comparative Literature University of California, Riverside, August 2014 Dr. Perry Link, Chairperson My dissertation rethinks satire and redefines our understanding of it through the examination of works from the 1930s and 1940s. I argue that the fluidity of satiric writing in the 1930s and 1940s undermines the certainties of the “satiric triangle” and gives rise to what I call, variously, self-satire, self-counteractive satire, empathetic satire and ambiguous satire. It has been standard in the study of satire to assume fixed and fairly stable relations among satirist, reader, and satirized object. This “satiric triangle” highlights the opposition of satirist and satirized object and has generally assumed an alignment by the reader with the satirist and the satirist’s judgments of the satirized object. Literary critics and theorists have usually shared these assumptions about the basis of satire. I argue, however, that beginning with late-Qing exposé fiction, satire in modern Chinese literature has shown an unprecedented uncertainty and fluidity in the relations among satirist, reader and satirized object.
