The Goddess: Myths of the Great Mother Description The Goddess is all around us: Her face is reflected in the burgeoning new growth of every ensuing spring; her power is evident in the miracle of conception and childbirth and in the newborn’s cry as it searches for the nurturing breast; we glimpse her in the alluring beauty of youth, in the incredible power of sexual attraction, in the affection of family gatherings, and in the gentle caring of loved ones as they leave the mortal world. The Goddess is with us in the everyday miracles of life, growth, and death which always have surrounded us and always will, and this ubiquity speaks to the enduring presence and changing masks of the universal power people have always recognized in their lives.

    JOHN LINDOW HANDBOOK OF NORSE MYTHOLOGY, 2001 Time, pp. 39-43 THE NATURE OF MYTHIC TIME Religions of the world experience and encode time in various ways: as a linear progression, as a never-ending set of cycles, as a process of degeneration, and so forth. We are most used to a linear system, since it characterizes the Judeo-Christian tradition, which sees a clear progression from the creation of the world through a long present leading to a last time, a day of judgment; an end of history. Similarly, our science gives us increasing detail concerning the origin of the entire universe. We live in the long aftermath of the big boom and the origin of our solar system, and we know that in due course our sun will die. In a cyclical system, however, such a linear progression repeats itself endlessly; each end is followed by a new beginning. Determining the time system of Scandinavian mythology presents special challenges because many of the sources were recorded by Christians, whose notion of time was linear and whose notion of history called for an essentially clear chronology. This is especially so of Snorri Sturluson, whose Edda is the clearest and most appealing account of the mythology to modem readers. It must not be forgotten that Snorrri was also a historian, the author or compiler of a history of the Norwegian kings (Heimskringla) arranged wholly chronologically. The other great overview of the mythology is the eddic poem Völuspá. Although nearly all scholars agree that it dates from the pagan period, most would assign it to late paganism, and Christian influence seems apparent.

[email protected] Prepared for: Henrik Ibsen: The Birth of “Friluftsliv” A 150 Year International Dialogue Conference Jubilee Celebration North Troendelag University College, Levanger, Norway Mountains of Norwegian/Swedish Border September 14-19, 2009 1 SACRED TREES OF NORWAY AND SWEDEN: A FRILUFTSLIV QUEST Abstract What began as a curiosity about the traditions and folklore related to trees planted in the center of many farms in Norway, „Tuntre‟, and Sweden, „Vårdträd‟, led me to a recognition of a tradition that can still be observed in the cultural landscape today. The tradition can be traced as far back as the Viking period, and directly linked to the mythology of the World Tree, Yggdrasil. I have been studying these traditions as they relate to the field of environmental education as an example of mythopoetic stories and folklore that influence moral and ethical regard for nature. Two areas that I feel are relevant to perspectives of „Friluftsliv‟ are: *How does the mythology and folklore of a culture influence their perception of place? *How does ecological knowledge of a landscape compare with „kjennskap‟, or what is sacred in a landscape? Superperception and Divine Intervention among the Old Norse Gods Declan Taggart School of English, O’Rahilly Building, University College Cork, Cork, Ireland; [email protected] Received: 11 July 2019; Accepted: 2 August 2019; Published: 6 August 2019 Abstract: In Old Norse mythology, gods like Freyja, Odin, and Thor are usually characterized as human-like creatures: they walk and ride animals, eat, grow old, and even die. Was there more to conceptions of Old Norse gods than those anthropomorphic representations? This article presents evidence that the gods of early Scandinavia were sometimes thought of as superperceiving and able to act in ways that defied the limitations of a physical body. It engages with and challenges theological correctness, a prominent theory in the Cognitive Science of Religion, to elucidate the sources of Old Norse religion and the cognitive and contextual foundations of the representations of gods encountered there. Following an examination of the mechanisms through which Old Norse gods’ superperception and disembodied action were narrativized and rationalized, the article concludes with a discussion of the consequences of non-anthropomorphic representations of the gods for understanding Scandinavian worshippers’ everyday religious life. Associated with the plow. Tricked the king of Sweden out of a tract of his land. Grimnir – Pseudonym of Odin when he visits his foster son Geirrod, King of the Goths. Gullveig – A Vanir goddess (probably Freyja) who is burned three times by the Aesir.

But if I had to declare a favorite, it would probably be for the Norse myths. My first encounter with Asgard and its inhabitants was as a small boy, no more than seven, reading the adventures of the Mighty Thor as depicted by American comics artist Jack Kirby, in stories plotted by Kirby and Stan Lee and dialogued by Stan Lee’s brother, Larry Lieber. Kirby’s Thor was powerful and good-looking, his Asgard a towering science fictional city of imposing buildings and dangerous edifices, his Odin wise and noble, his Loki a sardonic horn-helmeted creature of pure mischief.

    Fate and Cosmogony in Völuspá: Shaping History in a Moment1 Declan Taggart IN CONTRAST to, say, the Christian religion that attenuated and eventually overwhelmed it, the pre-Christian tradition in Scandinavia seems never to have offered unconditional gratitude to the deities it recognized as its makers.2 Instead, Völuspá, the most expansive poem inflected by these customs to survive, appears to consistently associate imperfections in these divine smiths and their methods with natural and social corruption, and with the approach of Ragnarök, an inevitable, world-destroying conflagration. Therefore, after necessarily first establishing the specifics of the cosmogonic methods portrayed in Völuspá, this essay will reflect upon the philosophical underpinnings of this distinctive narrative of existence, focussing in particular on the relationship between the act of world-forging and the poem’s understanding of fate. It could be argued that the ambivalence congenital to this view of creation is derived from commonplace attitudes to crafting and craftsmen, and that this context therefore provides a pre-existing model by which to judge the success of the Æsir (the group of Old Norse deities principally dealt with here). However, due to the constraints imposed by the length of this discussion, this wider circumstance will be largely overlooked, except where relevant comparative examples have been footnoted. The shaping of the beings that inhabit this cosmography will be treated in a similar way, for the same reason, although it could be argued that complementary, possibly isomorphic, principles are elemental to these creations too. 1 This article was the runner-up of the Magnus Magnusson Essay Prize (2011).

SVIPDAG AND GROA Groa's son Svipdag is mentioned by this name in two Old Norse songs: Gróugaldur and Fjölsvinnsmál, which, as Bugge has already pointed out, are mutually connected and describe episodes from the same chain of events.1 Gróugaldur‟s contents are the following: Groa is dead when the event that the song describes occurs. Svipdag is then still quite young. Before her death she has told him that he should go to her grave and call on her if he needs her help. The grave is a “cairn-cromlech,”2 a grave-chamber built of great slabs over an “earth-fast stone,” furnished with a door (str. 1, 15). Svipdag's father has married again. The stepmother commands her young stepson to go away in order to seek Menglöðum, "those fond of ornaments." From Fjölsvinnsmál we learn that one of them called thus is a maiden who becomes Svipdag's wife. Her proper name is not given. She is continually designated only as Menglöð, Menglad, one of "those fond of ornaments," whom Svipdag receives as his task to find. 1 These poems, both written in ljódaháttr, an eddic meter, are preserved in seven paper manuscripts all dated from the 17th century. In three of these, the two poems appear together in sequence. In the remaining four, the two sections are reversed with the eddic poem Hyndluljóð standing between them.
