GFII – L’ebook dans l’EPUR – version mars 2012 4 Contexte Le Groupement Français de l’Industrie de l’Information (GFII) regroupe les ac- teurs du marché de l’information et de la connaissance : producteurs d’information, éditeurs, serveurs, intermédiaires, diffuseurs d’information, pres- tataires, éditeurs de logiciels, bibliothèques et organismes acheteurs d’information. Le GFII anime des groupes de travail, qui permettent aux acteurs de l’industrie de l’information de se rencontrer, de confronter et d’échanger leurs points de vue sur les aspects juridiques, techniques et économiques du secteur. Du fait de sa composition, rassemblant des membres des secteurs privé et public, le GFII est un lieu privilégié pour faire progresser la connaissance mutuelle des différents acteurs de l’information, leurs métiers, objectifs et contraintes. Le GFII participe ainsi à la formation continue de ses membres. Le GFII a accompagné l’ensemble des acteurs dans le développement du marché de l’information numérique et anime un groupe de travail consacré au livre nu- mérique depuis décembre 2009. De décembre 2009 à juillet 2011, le groupe de travail, présidé par Catherine Thiolon (Editions Quae), a procédé à des auditions des principaux acteurs de la chaîne du livre numérique scientifique et profes- sionnel. Ces auditions ont donné lieu à de nombreuses discussions autour des usages, des pratiques, des modèles économiques, des difficultés techniques, etc. Pour diffuser ces travaux, le groupe de travail a décidé de mettre en pratique ses propres recommandations et de créer un livre numérique synthétisant ses ré- flexions et mettant en valeur les retours d’expériences de ses membres : auteurs- chercheurs, éditeurs, agrégateurs, responsables de bibliothèques universitaires, libraires, etc. Cet ouvrage est diffusé dans 3 formats (PDF, ePub et Kindle) et disponible sur la plupart des plates-formes. GFII – L’ebook dans l’EPUR – version mars 2012 5 Objectifs L’objectif de cet ebook sur les ebooks est de donner des clés pour comprendre la situation du livre numérique dans l’Edition Professionnelle, Universitaire et de Recherche (EPUR), et de prévoir son évolution à court terme. Ce livre blanc propose des éclairages, en simplifiant parfois des situations complexes et souvent illisibles. Ce livre blanc numérique est le fruit d’un groupe de travail du GFII composé de professionnels en exercice provenant d’horizons variés qui souhaitent partager leurs analyses et leurs expériences. De nombreux sujets sont juste esquissés dans cette première version. Vos contributions sont les bienvenues sur la plate- forme mise en place à cet effet par le GFII (http://www.gfii.fr/epur/ ) Cet ouvrage se veut une illustration en grandeur réelle des possibilités du livre numérique, avec notamment l’animation d’une communauté d’experts autour de ce projet et l’appel à de nombreuses contributions pour l’enrichir. EDUCATION LAW ASSOCIATION 61st Annual Conference, 2015 INTRODUCTION The history of social media traces back to the 1950s. However, the introduction of the first smartphone in 2007 began a revolution in how people communicate. Abruptly, the ability to distribute text and images to a worldwide audience from nearly anywhere and at nearly anytime became commonplace. Suddenly, the Tinker1 schoolhouse gate seemed to become a far less distinct landmark between “on campus” and “off campus.” Neither the courts nor public schools were prepared to handle the fallout from this new technology. In December of 2005, a western Pennsylvania high school student, Justin Layshock,2 created a MySpace profile in the name of his principal, Eric Trosch. Layshock created the profile using his grandmother’s computer at her home. The only school resource used was Mr. Trosch’s photograph that Layshock had copied from the school’s official website. Layshock’s unflattering profile (along with three other unauthorized, more vulgar profiles) upset Mr. Trosch who, the following January, suspended Layshock for “disruption of the normal school process” and “harassment of a school administrator via computer.”3 Layshock and his parents filed suit in the federal court, Western District of Pennsylvania, against the school, principal Trosch, and the superintendent claiming an abridgement of Layshock’s right to free expression. During mid-March 2007, an 8th grader identified in court records as “J.S.”4 with help from a classmate, created a fake profile of their principal, Mr.

    Viewpoint The iPad Versus Lovers of Traditional Print Gary Schnitz iPad Introduced Recently, I spent some time on Apple, Inc.’s website watching a QuickTime video of Steve Jobs as he introduced Apple’s iPad to the world (Figure 1). This keynote presentation had been recorded from the iPad unveiling event on January 27, 2010, which was held at the Moscone Center in San Francisco. The streaming video of the address is 1 hour and 32 minutes in length, and is still featured on Apple’s website.1 An edited version of the Keynote Address is also available in two parts on YouTube.2 I had similarly watched Mr. Jobs in 2007, when he introduced the now ubiquitous iPhone. The iPad, no doubt, will build on the successes and favorable experiences that users have had with the iPhone and iPod Touch. Both of these innovative Apple products are pretty amazing pieces of hardware, and they already have begun to revolutionize the way we read or view content (or at least they will do so soon). 1. That value includes children whose road to literacy begins at the library; newly employed workers who use the library to improve their skills and find jobs; every patron who learns something new or enriches their life using library resources; and the myriad ways a good public library strengthens its community as a community center and resource. Those anecdotes and uncounted benefits make up the flesh and blood of a public library’s story—but there are also the bones: countable benefits, including those reported every year. Even including only those countable benefits, public libraries offer excellent value: by my conservative calculation, most provide more than $4 in benefits for every $1 in spending. So what?
