Danny and Richard have been musical partners for well over a decade and Danny has become a well established part of Richard’s musical DNA. After interval, Richard returns to the stage with his full band and an exciting creative sound and lighting production. After more than 40 years of treading the boards on the Australian rock scene, this year Richard will bring together a very different style of show for the State Theatre. With the fantastic response to Richard’s recent memoirs, “The Best Years of Our Lives” in 2015, it occurred to him that audiences might just would appreciate a hybrid show featuring not just the music, but all the often crazy and often emotional stories behind the music. The book covers the halcyon years from the late Sixties in London to the Seventies and Eighties on the Oz rock scene. The Market as Organizer of an Urban CommunitY Pike Place Market, Seattle The Pike Place Market, which climbs a steep hillside not far.above the Seattle waterfront (fig. 2-1), is one of America's great urban places. Some people, hearing its name without ever having been there, might think the Pike Place Market won the Rudy Bruner Award for Excellence in the Urban Environment because it is a "festival marketplace." They would be wrong, and it is worth pointing out why. The places that developers call festival markets are shopping centers that offer food and goods in an entertaining urban setting. Festival markets have wonderful aromas, public performers, and lots of small shops. They typically have interesting views. And all these things can be found at Pike Place, which is certainly festive. But the differences between Pike Place and a festival market are profound. Unlike festival markets, the Pike Place Market is a place where people live as well as shop. Some of Pike Place's inhabitants are wealthy, but a gleater number are poor or of moderate income; they occupy new or rehabilitated apartments mainly because an effort was made to obtain government subsidies. The chain merchants that operate in festival mar- kets are not allowed at Pike Place; on the contrary, Pike Place strives to rely on independent enterprises whose owners are on the premises, making their concerns and their personalities felt. Although there are plenty of restaurants and take-out food stands at Pike Place, just as in a festival market, much of the food at Pike Place comes in a basic, less expensive form-raw, forhome consumption. -

A new park, Muehlebach Field, dedicated to the great American sport, Baseball, will open Tuesday, July third, Brooklyn Avenue at 22nd. This event will be of interest to all who enjoy clean, healthful, outdoor recreation. The day has gone by when business men look upon a holiday as a lost opportunity. It is now considered an INVESTMENT, as employer and employe alike return, not only with renewed ambition, but with new thoughts and new ideas for which Old Man Success is always on the lookout. For this reason, I recommend that every employer forget the ever present serious side of life and attend the opening baseball game at Muehlebach Field. I also recommend that every employer as far as possible give the same privilege to his employes. General Admission DiMaggio’s Other Streak by S. Derby Gisclair Member, Society for American Baseball Research In 1933, Joe DiMaggio was an 18-year old rookie playing for his hometown San Francisco Seals in the Class AA Pacific Coast League (PCL). An unknown who had been playing semi-pro ball two years earlier as a newsboy, his name was often misspelled in the press of the day as De Maggio, even after he broke the PCL record for hitting safely in consecutive games set in 1915 by Jack Ness. It wasn’t until Seals owner and PCL vice-president Charley Graham was making arrangements to have DiMaggio’s name engraved on a gold watch presented to him for breaking the record that the question arose. After all, Joe’s older brother Vince, a former Seal who was then playing with the Hollywood Stars, spelled his name DiMaggio. Joe had actually played 3 games at shortstop with the Seals at the end of the 1932 season and had only been invited to spring training in 1933 after his brother Vince argued his case to manager Lefty O’Doul. It worked out well for Joe, who the team signed, but not so well for Vince, who the team released. Luckily for DiMaggio and for the fans in San Francisco, O’Doul moved him from shortstop to right field. DiMaggio was very erratic, always overthrowing the first baseman. His throwing arm was better suited to an outfielder and he was a pretty fair hitter. No one had any idea of what was to come. -
