“Take me out to the Ball Game” I want to hear The Star Spangled Banner echoing through the park, the crack of a bat connecting with a baseball; I want to smell that fresh-cut grass, mustard on hot dogs, those warmed peanuts just out of their shell, and feel the rush of excitement when a ball sails clean out of the stadium. run!

We have here in the South Sound the . The Tacoma Rainiers are right here in our back- yard; meaning we can enjoy a night at the ballpark without having to (gasp) drive to . Of all our major league-affiliated baseball teams, our Rainiers reside to their parent organization (36 miles) than any other team. That wasn’t, however, always the case:

Other than a one-season stint between 1904 and 1905 the didn’t come here to the South Sound until 1960. Back then the Tacoma team was known as the Tacoma Giants, owned by Giants’ owner Horace Stoneham; he controlled the team until the end of the 1965 season, when the stepped in

Ownership changed hands many times since then and the team played under many monikers: the Tacoma Twins, the Tacoma Tigers, and the Tacoma Tugs (as in the nautical variety). For a very brief time in the late 1970s the team was even affiliated with the .

It wasn’t until the 1995 season that “our” team became affiliated with the and the Ta- coma Rainiers was born. (The origin of the team name is from the baseball team, a minor league team which existed in the pre-Mariners era under the ownership of the Rainier Brewing Company.)

Since that time many of Seattle’s great players have played here in Tacoma, including , , Raul Ibanez, Felix Hernandez, JJ Putz and even recent Hall of Fame inductee Ken Griffey, Jr. during some rehabilitation assignments.

For the past 12 years Cheney Stadium also has been home to Rhubarb the Reindeer, the Rainiers’ delight- fully eccentric baseball-loving . According to the team, no one quite knows the origin of Rhubarb’s name; they only know that he followed the bright lights of a Cheney fireworks display from his home in the wilds of Mount Rainier National Park and has never left the stadium. These days Rhubarb can be found hanging out with his best buddy, , jamming to his favorite song, “Jump” by Van Halen and chowing down on Cheney Mountain Dogs.

Our Cheney Stadium has undergone some changes, too; during the 210-day break between the 2010 and 2011 seasons the stadium, with the use of local materials, now boasts a greater seating capacity, more ADA accessibility, a club and restaurant, a luxury box, and double the number of concession stands.

FUN FACT: , the 1990’s pop star in boy band “98 Degrees”, was once co-owner of the Ta- coma Rainiers.

Join us on May 26th for TPCBA’s annual CLE, Social, “Bar” BQ, Game and Fireworks at our Extraordinary Cheney Stadium!
