Frequency Finder UK (www.frequencyfinder.org.uk) Classic Radio 1 Schedules (1967-2004) October 1967 In the early years, Radio 1 was very different. It was originally conceived as a general popular music network, broadcasting easy listening, jazz, folk and country as well as pop and rock music. The intention was that it would opt out of the Light Programme with music when the Light was carrying a speech programme. This was largely the pattern in the first few years, with a lot of sharing between Radios 1 and 2, though the two stations did carry separate music programmes at breakfast and late afternoon. The daytime schedules didn't fully separate until the 1970s. Another feature of the early schedule is that many programmes featured different presenters on different days or in different weeks. A lot of the presenters floated between several shows. Introduction The Performance Report uses the measurement framework published in October 2017 1 which comprises four measures: a) Availability: the nature, type, quantity, and range of content available across the BBC’s output, as well as the spend on this content; b) Consumption: the extent to which audiences consume the content provided by the BBC. This category provides an overview of what content people watch/listen to/use, as well as how much time they spend with it, by service, platform or across the BBC; c) Impact: what audiences think about the BBC’s services and output, including their satisfaction with various aspects of the BBC’s delivery of the public purposes; d) Contextual factors: aspects of each public purpose that cannot be measured solely by the measures above, such as consideration of additional information provided by the BBC, engagement with stakeholders, and additional qualitative or other third-party research. Contextual factors may vary from year to year. This enables measurement of the BBC’s performance across all its services and output and provides an overall perspective on how the BBC is delivering for audiences.

This provides an opportunity to consider the complementary roles of these services, as well as the combined impact of the entire BBC music radio portfolio and its offer to listeners 1.2 Our overall assessment is that the BBC makes a valuable contribution to music radio, but it needs to be held to account more firmly against its public service remit. Peak hours in particular are largely devoted to popular music programmes and are not providing sufficiently distinctive content for listeners. Public service content is scheduled mostly in off peak hours. 1.3 Independent consultants BDRC Continental were commissioned to assess listener perspectives on the output of Radio 1, Radio 2 and Radio 3.
