Au cours de ce séjour, qui dura un mois, Mozart fut pressenti par Pasquale Bondmi, directeur de la troupe italienne du théâtre de la ville pour écrire un opéra qui serait prêt au debut de I hiver suivant, moyennant le versement d'une somme de cent ducats de Bohême Se souvenant des succès retentissants remportés par "L'Enlèvement au Sérail" et "Les Noces de Figaro" à Prague et connaissant toujours une situation financière précaire, Mozart accepta l'offre avec empresse- ment. Rentre a Vienne, il demanda un livret à l'abbé Da Ponte, son heureux collaborateur pour "Les Noces de Figaro . Cet aventurier casanovien se mit aussitôt au travail, voyant dans la vie de Don Juan une sorte de transposition de sa propre existence de libertin. Certes, le sujet n'était pas neuf et avait ins- pire de nombreux auteurs depuis la comédie en vers de Tirso de Molina : "El Burlador de Sevilla" representee en Espagne au XVIF siècle. Mozart connaissait "Don Juan ou le festin de pierre" de Moliere et avait pu voir à Salzbourg le ballet-pantomime composé par Gluck sur le même thème bnhn, au XVIll siecle, de nombreux musiciens italiens avaient écrit un "Donjuán" • Righini Cale- garu Tritto, Gazzaniga. Mozart a probablement entendu ce dernier ouvrage représenté à Vienne en 1787. Par ailleurs, Da Ponte suit d'assez près le livret écrit par Bertati pour l'opéra de Gazzaniga Mozart entreprit sa participation dès son retour à Vienne. Le musicien fut profondément alTecté au cours de la même annee 1787 par plusieurs disparitions : celle du comte Auguste von Hatzfeld du doc- teur Barisani et de son père Léopold. Ces deuils ont vraisemblablement inspiré à Mozart les accents douloureux qu'il prête à Donna Anna. Mais le musicien chasse la tristesse par le travail. Lorsqu'il se rend a Prague avec son épouse, vers la mi-septembre, la partition est pratiquement terminée L'ouver- tjjre sera ecrite pendant la nuit, du 27 au 28 octobre, juste avant la première représentation. La création de Don Giovanni" avait été initialement prévue pour la soirée du 14 octobre en l'honneur du passage du prince Antoine de Saxe, en voyage de noces avec l'archiduchesse Marie-Thérèse de Toscane N'étant pas prête à cette date, l'œuvre fut remplacée par "Les Noces de Figaro" ce qui déclencha une petite cabale dont Mozart sortit victorieux. "Don Giovanni" fut finalement créé à Prague le 29 octobre 1787, avec un immense succès. Par contre, l'accueil de Vienne, le 7 mai 1788, fut beaucoup plus réservé Une fois de plus la cabale des médiocres se manifestait. Quatre ans plus tard, ce sera l'ultime chef- d'œuvre : "La Flûte Enchantée", puis le rendez-vous avec la mort, qui ne lui permettra pas d'achever son "Requiem", le 5 décembre 1791. "J'écrirai cette nuit pour Mozart, et je penserai à relire r"Enfer de Dante" a écrit Lorenzo Da Ponte, en parlant de la genèse de "Don Giovanni" dans ses "mémoires". Pouvait-il se douter qu'il écrivait pour l'éternité et que son nom survivrait grâce au génie de Mozart? W.A. MOZART André SEGOND ACTE I - Scène 1 Leporello attend devant la maison où son maître Don Giovanni a pénétré pour séduire Donna Anna II fait nuit. Leporello se plaint de sa condition de valet et rêve d'être gentilhomme. Don Giovanni sort précipitam- ment de la demeure poursuivi par Donna Anna qui veut le démasquer. Alerté par le bruit, le Commandeur pere de Donna Anna, surgit. Don Giovanni le tue en duel puis s'enfuit avec Leporello. Donna Anna revient avec son fiancé Don Ottavio. Tous deux jurent de venger la mort du Commandeur. Scène 2 Dans une rue. Don Giovanni confie à Leporello ses nouveaux projets amoureux. Cet entretien est inter- rompu par l'an-ivée d'une femme : Donna Elvira, qui jure de se venger de son amant infidèle. Don Giovanni ACTE I se propose galamment de la consoler. Reconnaissant alors en Donna Elvira la femme qu'il a abandonnée Don Giovanni s'échappe, tandis que Leporello récite l'impressionnant catalogue des conquêtes amoureuses de son maître. Scène 3 Dans la campagne des environs de Séville, puis du palais de Don Giovanni, Masetto et Zeriina préparent leur manage. Don Giovanni invite la noce chez lui. Il éloigne Masetto et commence à séduire Zerlina Donna Elvira s interpose et met en garde Zerlina. Toujours en quête du meurtrier du Commandeur, surviennent Donna Anna et Don Ottavio. Don Giovanni leur jure une éternelle amitié. Donna Elvira réapparaît et dénoncé Don Giovanni comme un être sans cœur et sans parole. Pour donner le change. Don Giovanni la traite de folle. Mais Donna Anna est sûre d'avoir reconnu, en entendant Don Giovanni, là voix de l'assassin de son père. Elle demande vengeance à Don Ottavio, tandis que Don Giovanni ordonne à Leporello de pré- parer une fête. Scène 4 Dans les jardins de Don Giovanni, Masetto accuse Zeriina de trahison et refuse de lui pardonner Elle l'im- plore SI bien qu'il finit par faire la paix avec elle. Don Giovanni les invite dans son palais. Donna Elvira Don ACTE I Ottavio et Donna Anna arnvent masqués. Ils sont conviés à la lete. Scène 5 Au cours de la lete. Don Giovanni entraîne Zerlina qui appelle à l'aide. Don Giovanni accuse Leporello de ce rapt mais personne ne le croit. Donna Anna, Donna Elvira et Don Ottavio se démasquent et accusent Don Giovanni qui prend la fuite. ACTE II - Scène 1 Don Giovanni et Leporello échangent leurs vêtements car Don Giovanni a l'intention de séduire la servante de Donna Elvira. Cette dernière, qui aime toujours Don Giovanni, apparaît à son balcon. Leporello déguisé luijure lidelite et l'emmène. Resté seul. Don Giovanni chante sa sérénade pour la servante. Il est interrompu par Masetto et des paysans amiés qui sont à sa recherche pour faire justice. Don Giovanni quia l'apparence de Leporello, les envoie dans toutes les directions, puis rosse Masetto resté avec lui. Zeriina accourt et récon- ACTE I forte Masetto. Scène 2 Les gravures sont de Johann Heinrich Ramberg Don Ottavio, Donna Anna, Masetto et Zeriina surprennent Donna Elvira et le faux Don Giovanni. Donna Leipzig 1825 hlvira implore leur clemence, Leporello révèle son identité et parvient à s'échapper. Scène 4 Donna Anna refuse d'épouser Don Ottavio tant que la mort de son père ne sera pas vengée et sa douleur apaisée. Scène 5 Servi par Leporello, Don Giovanni dîne joyeusement dans son palais. Un petit orchestre joue les airs à la mode. Donna Elvira survient et le supplie de se repentir.     VI. THE STEREO ERA In 1954, a timid and uncertain record industry took the plunge to begin investing heav- ily in stereophonic sound. They were not timid and uncertain because they didn’t know if their system would work – as we have seen, they had already been experimenting with and working the kinks out of stereo sound since 1932 – but because they still weren’t sure how to make a home entertainment system that could play a stereo record. Nevertheless, they all had their various equipment in place, and so that year they began tentatively to make recordings using the new medium. RCA started, gingerly, with “alternate” stereo tapes of monophonic recording sessions. Unfortunately, since they were still uncertain how the results would sound on home audio, they often didn’t mark and/or didn’t file the alternate stereo takes properly. As a result, the stereo versions of Charles Munch’s first stereo recordings – Berlioz’ “Roméo et Juliette” and “Symphonie Fanastique” – disappeared while others, such as Fritz Reiner’s first stereo re- cordings (Strauss’ “Also Sprach Zarathustra” and the Brahms Piano Concerto No. 1 with Ar- thur Rubinstein) disappeared for 20 years. Oddly enough, their prize possession, Toscanini, was not recorded in stereo until his very last NBC Symphony performance, at which he suf- fered a mental lapse while conducting. None of the performances captured on that date were even worth preserving, let alone issuing, and so posterity lost an opportunity to hear his last half-season with NBC in the excellent sound his artistry deserved. Columbia was even less willing to pursue stereo.

DLOG was founded in 1965 to help support the Denver Lyric Opera Company. The opera company was forced to close in 1968, but the Guild pursued other programs in keeping with its purpose to encourage and support young singers and provide continuing education to the members in the appreciation and knowledge of opera. Competition for Colorado Singers In 1984, the Guild inaugurated its signature event, the Competition for Colorado Singers, to support singers ages 23-32 in pursuing their operatic careers. Since then, the Guild has awarded over $850,000 to Competition winners. Hundreds of young singers have successfully launched their operatic and musical careers since winning the Competition. Grants The Guild provides grants to Colorado’s colleges and universities for vocal scholarships, and to apprentice opera programs. Over the years, these grants have totaled over $812,000 from the earnings on our endowment. Grants are given to the voice performance programs at Colorado State University, Metro State University of Denver, University of Colorado, University of Denver, University of Northern Colorado, and young artist apprentice programs of Central City Opera, Opera Colorado, Opera Fort Collins, and Opera Theatre of the Rockies in Colorado Springs.
