The Carolingian cross pictured on the cover, sculpted by Tommaso Gismondi, hangs above the sanctuary of St. Mary’s Church in New Haven, Connecticut, the birthplace of the Knights of Columbus. The 6-foot, 400-pound cross is a signed replica of the cross commissioned by the Knights for the Chapel of Saints Benedict, Cyril and Methodius constructed with the Order’s sponsorship beneath Saint Peter’s Basilica in Rome. It is modeled after a cross presented by Charlemagne, Holy Roman Emperor, to St. Peter’s in the 9 th century and stolen from the Vatican in the 16 th century.
