Objectives of the Chair

The Chair was approved and established vide UGC letter No: 29-5 (3)/2012 (CU) dated 30/08/2013 under XII Plan Period. However, the Chair started functioning after the appointment of Chair Professor, Dr Satish Kr Ganjoo, on 11/05/2017, with the purpose of:

1. To identify and study social, cultural, economic, political, demographic, ecological and environmental related problems, needs of the people and emerging tribal community issues in inter-disciplinary perspective.

2. To offer a forum for presenting original research articles written on the tribal culture and expressive behaviour to present and share research on tribal languages of , many of which are threatened and are on the verge of extinction.

3. To hold seminars, conferences, symposia and public lectures for the dissemination and sharing of knowledge accrued through research projects.

4. To bring out publications in the form of reports, monographs, news bulletins and journals.

5. To act as a nodal agency to provide consultative services in research and development activities to the various stakeholders.

6. To develop partnership with national and international funding agencies for carrying out joint research projects for the development and growth of the tribal areas.

7. To explore in to the emerging issues like tribal rights over land, forests and their management; educational and health infra-structure development with the participation of the State as well as people for the promotion of social harmony, development with sustainability.

8. To identify the existing employment avenues and human resources potentials in the tribal areas for the formulation of employment generating policies and programmes for the optimum utilisation of existing skills and promotion of new skills and talents through training programmes.

2. The Chair is coordinating with other teaching and research departments / centres of the University to encourage inter-disciplinary and multi-lingual studies, especially with Dr Ambedkar Chair, P G Dept of Political Science, P G Dept of History, Culture and Archaeology.

9. Departmental Library : The Chair has purchased the 233 books for about ​ Rs 1.5 lac so far and created a departmental library. Efforts are being made to establish a rich library and documentation centre.

10. Contribution in Administrative Work: The Chair is actively ​ involved in the administrative and academic affairs of the University. Besides participating in different CVC and various Committee meetings of the University , the Chair Professor, Dr Satish Ganjoo, is also the member of: i) Board of Studies in the Dept of History, Culture and Archaeology, Central University of Himachal Pradesh. ii) Board of Studies in the Dept of Sanskrit and Pali, Central University of Himachal Pradesh.

11. Seminars and Extension Lectures: ​ ​ 1. The Chair organised a Seminar on 02 Sept 2017. The theme of the Seminar was: “The National Movement: Some New Trends and Approaches”. Prof Kapil Kumar from IGNOU, New Delhi, was invited as resource person.

2. Chair Professor, Dr Satish Kr Ganjoo, chaired the Seminar conducted by the P. G. Dept of History, CUHP, on 25 Oct 2017. The theme of the seminar was “SOCIETY and CULTURE of ANCIENT INDIA”. Prof Usha Rani Bhargava from CSJM University, Kanpur, was the Resource Person.

3. Chair Professor, Dr Satish Kr Ganjoo, chaired the Seminar conducted by the P G Dept of History, CUHP, on 15 Nov 2017. The theme of the seminar was Dharma in Ancient India. Dr Krishen Mohan Pandey was the resource person. 4. Chair Professor, Dr Satish Kr Ganjoo, chaired the Seminar conducted by the P G Dept of History, CUHP, on 15 Oct 2018. The theme f the seminar was Sanskrit Literature as the source of Ancient Indian Histry. Dr Vivek Sharma was the Resource Person.

5. Chair Professor, Dr Satish Kr Ganjoo, delivered guest lecture to the Post Graduate Students of History, CUHP, on History and Archaeology of Ancient India on January 15, 2019.

Future Plan of Action

The Chair for Tribal Studies, Central University of Himachal Pradesh has identified the following action plan for future:

1.Coordination with other Institutions, Centres of ​ ​ ​ ​ Excellence and Government Agencies: The Chair intends to coordinate with government agencies, institutions a​nd centres of excellence at national and international level for interdisciplinary research and teaching in tribal studies. Besides going through the main objectives of research, the Chair has identified the following fields of study:

3.15-Days National Workshops: The Chair proposes to organise 15-Days National Workshops after every year for indepth study of tribal demography, society, economy and cultural heritage. Academicians, inter-disciplinary experts and resource persons will be invited in these workshops.

4. Research Projects : The Chair intends to start three more Research Projects in the near future besides earlier ones. These proposed major projects will be:

1. Life and Conditions of the Tribal Community in Western Himalayas – Socio-Economic Study (including Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab and the other area between the Indus River in the west and the Kali River in the east). 2. Society and Culture of the Tribal Community in North Eastern States of India (including ). 3. Introduction of Devnagri Script for different Tribal Languages in North Eastern States of India.

5.Field Work / Surveys: The Chair intends to send inter-disciplinary teams of researchers and experts in the different tribal regions of the country to identify and study demographic, ecological and environment related problems; social, cultural, economic and political conditions; needs, expectations and implementation of government policies / schemes in those area.

6.Teaching: Besides the prevailing P G Diplomas in Tribal Studies and Jammu & Kashmi​r Studies, the Chair intends to start:

1. Diploma / Certificate Course in the Culture and History of Gujjars 2. Diploma / Certificate Course in Sharda Script

7.Research: Besides the five enrolled research scholars, the Chair intends to register three more for exploring the indepth research in tribal studies under expert guidance and supervision.

8.Interaction with Tribal Community and Lecture Series: The Chair intends to call regular interaction sessions with the members of tribal community and arrange the series of extension lectures (Janjatye-Samodoy Vaikhyanmala) for the dissemination and sharing of ​ ​ knowledge accrued through research projects, seminars, conferences, workshops and field works / surveys.

9.Publications: The Chair intends to bring out publications in the form of: ​

1. Research Journal: STUDIES of TRIBAL COMMUNITY 2. Reports, News Bulletins, Monographs, Articles, Research Papers 3. Books (Authored and Edited)

10.Departmental Library and Documentation Centre: The Chair has created a working Departmental Library . Efforts will be made to establish a rich library and documentation centre with computer facilities. Some journals and magazines will be also subscribed. The timing of this library will be extended up to 6.00 PM for the benefit of researchers, students and community members.

11.Study Tours: Study tours will be arranged to the tribal areas to interact with the community members and secure a first hand information about their socio-economic life and cultural heritage. Western Himalayan Region and North Eastern States will be the thrust area.
