2005 TRAVEL GUIDE TO ’S

Your Four Season Vacation Destination

Welcome to the Flathead Valley In 1898, John Muir advised readers of Atlantic Monthly. “If you are business- tangled, and so burdened with duty that only weeks can be got out of the heavy-laden year, then go to the Flathead Reserve...Get off the track at Belton Station, and in a few minutes you will fi nd yourself in the midst of what you are sure to say is the best care-killing scenery on the continent...Give a month at least to this precious reserve...the time will not be taken from the sum of your life.” Muir’s words are still true today. The Flathead Reserve is now the and Glacier National Park. But the Flathead Valley still welcomes the traveler with spectacular scenery, unspoiled wilderness and communities of friendly people. Take time to discover why this special corner of the world should be your next destination.

PARA SAILING NEAR WAYFARERS STATE PARK Sparkling Playground Photo Paul A. Spade There’s lots of room to play on Flathead Lake. The largest natural freshwater lake west of the Mississippi is 28 miles long and up to 15 miles wide. That translates to 188 square miles of pure enjoyment. Two highways traverse the lake’s shoreline. In spring, the white blooms of the cherry orchards promise luscious fruit in July and August. Six units of the Flathead Lake State Park provide sites for family picnics, swimming, boating or camping. Two golf courses offer spectacular views and challenging play. On Flathead Lake there are all types of watercraft from motorized to sail to paddle. And swimming below the surface are trophy- size trout, yellow perch and whitefi sh. Wild Horse, the lake’s largest island, is a wildlife refuge for more than 75 species of bird along with deer, bighorn sheep, coyotes and bear. Geese, osprey, herons and eagles frequent the aptly named Bird Islands. This sparkling playground has something for everyone.

BUFFALO HILL GOLF COURSE for the Course Photo Karen Nichols To be named to Golf Digest’s top 50 Golf Destinations in the world, a destination must offer more than great golf courses. The choice was also based on service, transportation, setting, quality accommodations, travel to and around the destination, and value. That’s Flathead Valley golf! With nine public courses offering challenging layouts and unique golfi ng experiences, it’s no wonder visitors often bring golf clubs along with fi shing poles and camping gear. But it’s hard to keep your eye on the ball when you are playing a round surrounded by the mountains of Glacier National Park. Or on a course perched on the shores of Flathead Lake. Three valley courses are more than 50 years old with mature, well-tended greens, tree-line fairways and impressive clubhouses. More contemporary courses offer open links-style layouts, bent grass greens and plenty of water hazards. Courses are usually open from April through October. In season fees range from $25 to $60 a round. To make these prices even more attractive, area hotels and resorts offer all-inclusive golf packages.

Glacier National Park is even more spectacular when toured on cross-country skis or snowshoes. There are hundreds of trails in the Flathead National Forest and throughout the valley. Frozen lakes and ponds are perfect for skating and ice fi shing. Of course there’s skiing. The Big Mountain and Blacktail Mountain Ski Area promise great powder, acres of groomed trails, fantastic views, great rates and no lines! For a peak experience, tour the valley on a snowmobile. There are mountain top rides through snow ghosts and hundreds of miles of groomed trails winding through pristine alpine forests. But not all activities take place outdoors. The concert and theater seasons are in full swing. Winter festivals dot the calendar. Galleries and museums feature changing exhibitions. Today, much of the area remains as wilderness or national forest, but there are also friendly communities rich in hospitality and tradition. The Great Northern Railroad followed the Native American and fur trading routes to build their line. Amtrak’s Empire Builder now brings visitors from east and west, stopping at historic railroad hotels and stations along the way. Originally built for railroad workers, the beautifully restored Belton Chalet in West Glacier and the Izaak Walton Inn at Essex remind us of those early railroading days. NORTHWEST MONTANA FAIR Hub of the Valley Photo Carl Wells Modern buildings blend with historic in Kalispell, the valley’s retail and fi nancial center. Art is everywhere. Huckleberry, a 2000 pound carved bear, greets visitors at the corner of Main and Center Streets. Murals grace historic buildings. And bright red and yellow Art Spot banners signal the locations of art galleries and studios. The city has more than 20 parks. Some surround historic structures while others were created for today’s active sports. Woodland Park is a year-round family favorite with rose garden, rustic log , log pavilion, picnic areas, water park, skate board park and a large pond that freezes for winter skating. Where buffalo once grazed, golfers now play the challenging layout of Buffalo Hill Golf Course. Two newer courses, Northern Pines and Village Greens, provide additional golfi ng challenges. The historic railroad depot welcomes visitors as the home of the Kalispell Chamber of Commerce and Flathead Convention & Visitor Bureau. Across the way, the Kalispell Center Mall offers a modern combination of lodging, shopping and dining. The city is also home to an ever-growing community college, three art foundries, high-speed telecommunications, and a state-of-the-art regional medical center. DRIFT BOAT ON SWAN RIVER Photo Carol Edgar Jewel on the Bay Nestled on the shores of Flathead Lake, with forest and mountains forming the perfect backdrop, Bigfork knows how to put on a show. Every holiday season, the village is decked out in colored lights, fresh-cut greenery and trees and hundreds of bright red bows. Add the Art Walk, concerts, parade, children’s party, sleigh rides, and shops crammed with holiday gifts and it’s enough to make Scrooge smile. Come spring, the waters of the Swan River rush into Flathead Lake, bringing kaykers from around the world to compete in the annual Whitewater Festival. The Swan River Nature Trail becomes a perfect viewing area to spot daring competitors trying to tame the class V rapids. Then there’s theater. With community and children’s theater, concerts and special events, the stage lights shine bright year round in the Bigfork Center for the Performing Arts. And for more than 40 years, summer in Bigfork has meant theater. Now in its 44th year, the Bigfork Summer Playhouse brings some of America’s best young talent to perform nightly in its musicals and comedies. Fall begins with the food and fellowship of Tamarack Time. This is a time to slow down, enjoy the changing colors, take a hike in the Jewel Basin or play a round of golf on the shores of Flathead Lake. Pick a season. Or visit often. DEER ON WILD HORSE ISLAND Lakeside Treasures Photo Carl Purcell Highway 93 from Missoula travels north through the Mission Valley, past the National Bison Range, historic St. Ignatius, Pablo and Ronan. Over the hill, Flathead Lake appears, its crystal clear water stretching to the horizon. Before roads were built along the lake, Port Polson was the transportation hub for travelers from the south. The steamers are gone, but Polson is still a perfect starting point for a Flathead Lake tour. Start with some history at the Polson-Flathead Historical Museum. Play a round of lakeside golf at the Polson Country Club. Cruise the lake, try whitewater rafting or take in the view of Kerr Dam. Enjoy an evening with the Port Polson Players. In Dayton, consistent winds mean great sailing. Rent a boat, take a lesson or watch the races. Drive a few miles west to Lake Mary Ronan, known for great fi shing year-round. In Lakeside, Blacktail Mountain Ski Area offers great skiing and great views. It’s just a few miles more to Somers where the Far West takes on passengers for its daily cruises. Keep your camera handy. This is a wildlife protection area, so keep an eye out for eagles, osprey and migrating waterfowl. 35 Lake Mary Ronan Lodge & Resort Port Polson Inn 888-845-7702 Polson 800-654-0682 Ten rustic cabins and a lodge with bar and restaurant Outstanding Flathead Lake & Mission Mountain views. nestled on the shore of beautiful, quiet Lake Mary Glacier National Park, 70 miles. 36 Museums, Missions and Wildlife The Flathead Indian Reservation stretches south from the middle of Flathead Lake almost to Missoula. To the east, are the Mission Mountains while national forest hugs its western border. Spend at least a day exploring all that this land has to offer. Start with a visit to the People’s Center in Pablo to learn more about the history and culture of the Salish, Kootenai and Pend d’Oreille. The People’s Center also offers Native Ed-Ventures such as a traditional encampment, powwow or reservation tour with a Native American escort. The Ninepipe and Pablo National Wildlife Refuges are a birder’s delight. Together they offer more than 5000 acres of water, marsh and upland grasses. During the fall migrations, there may be up to 80,000 waterfowl. Tundra Swans and shorebirds use the refuge as a stopover and bald eagles can be spotted year-round. The Ninepipes Museum of Early Montana tells the story of the area’s early peoples as well as the trappers, miners, loggers and settlers who settled here. Established in 1908, the National Bison Range is one of the oldest big game refuges in the . Up to 500 bison roam its more than 18,000 acres along with antelope, deer, elk, bighorn sheep, bear and some mountain goats. Hiking is limited on the range, but two self-guided drives allow visitors to explore the range and view the wildlife. Jesuit missionaries established the St. Ignatius Mission in 1854. Once a thriving community with its own church, fl our mill, school, printing shop and hospital, only the church, rectory and the original residences of the priests and Sisters of Providence remain today. The simple brick church was built with local materials. Now a National ANTLERS AT NATIONAL BISON RANGE Historic Site, it contains 58 murals painted by Brother Joseph Carignano, a Photo Maxine Cass self-taught artist who served the mission as cook and handyman. The paintings depict scenes from the Old and New Testaments and paintings of various saints and Biblical scenes.
