UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA Los Angeles Staging Mysteries: Transnational Medievalist Performance in the Twentieth Century A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree Doctor of Philosophy in Theater and Performance Studies by Carla Neuss 2021 ã Copyright by Carla Neuss 2021 ABSTRACT OF THE DISSERTATION Staging Mysteries: Transnational Medievalist Performance in the Twentieth Century by Carla Neuss Doctor of Philosophy in Theatre and Performance Studies University of California, Los Angeles, 2021 Professor Sean Metzger, Chair This dissertation traces adapted forms of the medieval mystery cycle tradition within different transnational moments of social, political, and cultural crisis. In redirecting the spiritually didactic aims of medieval performance, the modern mysteries that constitute this project illuminate how medieval theatre functions as an historical imaginary for the transformative potential of performance. This project investigates three twentieth-century adaptations of the medieval mystery cycle tradition: Alexander Scriabin’s unfinished multi-genre performance, Mysterium (c. 1910); Jean Paul Sartre’s first play, Bariona (1940); and a South African production of the Chester Mystery Cycle, Yiimimangaliso (2000). Chapter 2 demonstrates how Mysterium sought to enact a distinctly medieval imaginary of spiritual unity epitomized by the Russian religious value of sobornost.’ In analyzing its Russian Symbolist aesthetics, I argue that the Mysterium was designed phenomenologically to enact social transformation on the eve of the Soviet revolution ii through "affective atmosphere.” Chapter 3 discusses Jean-Paul Sartre's relatively unknown play Bariona as an adaptation of the medieval French nativity play tradition produced during World War II. This chapter situates Bariona within the longstanding tradition of French medievalist performance as a contested political site within the national consciousness.

AHO APPROVED: Thesis Committee Major Professor__ ~.l........J~=ll£:::..i.=~~.L.L--=-"--'- -=--...::--- DEAN OF THE GRADUATE SCHOOL UNIVERSITY OF RHODE ISLAND 2008 Abstract Reweaving and reknitting techniques rebuild losses in textiles by replacing damaged yams to duplicate original structures and patterns. Traditionally viewed as restorative methods used mainly for consumer clothing and household furnishings, reweaving and reknitting have much potential for adaptation to the repair and stabilization of historic and collectible textiles. Standard textile conservation repair and stabilization techniques utilize hand sewn underlay and overlay patches and adhesive-coated underlay supports. Although these techniques can provide practical and time-saving approaches for a wide variety of situations, problems with these techniques can sometimes develop over the long term when issues of structural integrity and appearance are concerned.

Few are experienced enough in the difference between an object of scholarship and a matter thought. (…) He who thinks greatly must err greatly. We never come to thoughts. They come to us. From such companionship a few perhaps may rise to be journeymen in the craft of thinking. So that one of them, unforeseen, may become a master. (…) All our hearts courage is the echoing response to the first call of Being which gathers our thinking into the play of the world. (…) What is spoken is never and in no language, what is said. The oldest of the old follows behind us in our thinking and yet it comes to meet us. That is why thinking holds to the coming of what has been and is remembrance. (…) But poetry that thinks is in truth the topology of Being. This topology tells Being the whereabouts of its actual presence. Singing and thinking are the stems neighbour to poetry they grow out of Being and reach into its truth.” Martin Heidegger: The Thinker as Poet (Aus der Erfahrung des Denkens, 1947) Preface ‘Intangible’ and ‘tangible’ heritage – a topology of culture in contexts of faith, was researched, written, reflected upon, revised, criticised, affirmed and finally submitted as a PhD thesis to the Institute of Cultural Geography, at the Johannes Gutenberg University of Mainz, in December 2006.

  • Multiscale Approach in the Assessment of Nanocellulose-Based Materials As Consolidants for Painting Canvases
Multiscale approach in the assessment of nanocellulose-based materials as consolidants for painting canvases Alexandra Bridarolli Submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy University College London Eastman Dental Institute August 2019 1 Abstract This thesis investigates mainly the use of nanocellulose-based treatment for the consolidation of degraded cotton canvases of modern paintings and includes within this some case studies on linen canvases (sized and unsized) and 19th cent. historical samples from paintings. It. uses a multi-scale analytical approach where primarily controlled relative humidity dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA-RH) was used to evaluate the effect of the novel nanocellulose based preparations. It aims at quantifying the advantages, disadvantages, and limitations of their application. Initially, the baseline viscoelastic response to RH variations of a degraded cotton canvas was measured by DMA-RH. This technique was used further together with SEM to assess morphologically and mechanically 6 traditional consolidants including natural such as animal glue and synthetic materials. Following the same protocol, two solutions of nanocellulose-based consolidants developed in the frame of the Nanorestart project were assessed. These materials consisted of nanocellulose dispersions in water or water/ethanol and nanocomposites of nanocellulose- reinforced cellulose derivatives in polar/apolar solvents. Overall, higher consolidation at lower weight added was measured for the nanocellulose-based treatments tested when compared to the traditional consolidants. The penetration of the consolidant in the canvas also shows to greatly differ between treatments with the nanocellulose showing low penetration. Higher mechanical response to RH was also measured after treatment in particular with the water-based treatment. The results demonstrate how the adhesion, measured here at the nanoscale, and consolidant penetration into the canvas are dominant factors for the development of consolidation treatment for painting canvases.
