The idea of integrating the TUM Emeriti of Excellence into the daily operation of our university increasingly impressed itself upon me over the years in which I often had to present a “retirement diploma” to hard-working, laudable faculty members. More and more, their retirement seemed to me to be a great waste of talent and a loss to our family atmosphere: Wolfgang A. The knowledge and networks of experienced professors should remain accessible, and can be used to support the interests and aims of the university. At the project's inception, 26 scientists were included in the interdisciplinary group, which now numbers 56 professors; all faculties are represented apart from the still relatively newly founded TUM School of Education and the Department of Sport and Health Sciences, which is currently in the development phase. The TUM Emeriti of Excellence receive the necessary support for their honorary work from the univer- sity (e.g., the reimbursement of travel expenses). Requests for EoEs to carry out assignments are made both by the university administration, as well as from central service centers (such as the TUM International Center) and from centers dealing with the promotion of young talent (such as the TUM Young Academy and TUM Talent Factory). These colleagues have played a significant role in the development of the TUM Codes of Conduct. In addition to their knowledge and experience, the professors are above all distinguished by their independence – their personal interests, or those of faculty play a minor role in their activities. Their judgment can, amongst other things, be usefully deployed for all processes in which candidates have to be evalu- ated in competitive procedures. Thus, each semester, in the context of support programs for guest researchers and postdocs, 13 Emeriti sift and assess more than 350 applications from all over the world, and choose the best candidates for the TUM. Further important activities are presented on pages 12-13 of this brochure. Professors and university administrators regularly meet at the TUM Institute for Advanced Study (TUM-IAS) to discuss specific topics related to the development of the university. The scientists elect one of their number to be a spokesper- son, and one to be an acting representative who functions as a contact person for the university administration. The renowned professor of engineering science, Prof. Dr.-Ing. Georg Fäber, held the office of spokesperson up until June 2015, as well as holding the highly responsible position of TUM ombudsman since 2011. Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. mult. Karl- Heinz Hoffmann, president of the Bavarian Academy for Sciences is his successor. Since June 2015, Prof. Dr.-Ing. Jörg Eberspächer, whose name is well known in relation to international research in the field of telecommunication networks, TUM Institute of Advanced Study (TUM-IAS), Campus Garching has been acting spokesperson since June 2015. Since 2007, the TUM Emeriti of Excellence project office has been represented by Erika Schropp, with the able assistance of Dr. Birgit Herbst-Gaebel since 2015. Photosynthesis is the process by which higher plants, algae, and certain species of bacteria transform and store solar energy in the form of energy-rich organic molecules. These compounds are in turn used as the energy source for all growth and reproduction in these and almost all other organisms. As such, virtually all life on the planet ultimately depends on photosynthetic energy conversion. Respiration, which occurs in mitochondrial and bacterial membranes, utilizes energy present in organic molecules to fuel a wide range of metabolic reactions critical for cell growth and development. In addition, many photosynthetic organisms engage in energetically wasteful photorespiration that begins in the chloroplast with an oxygenation reaction catalyzed by the same enzyme responsible for capturing carbon dioxide in photosynthesis.

This work specifically examined the spin relaxation of hopping spin/charge carriers through a cubic lattice in the presence of varying degrees of energy disorder when the carrier spin is treated classically and random spin rotations are suffered during the hopping process (to mimic spin–orbit coupling effects) instead of during the wait time period (which would be more appropriate for hyperfine coupling). The problem was studied under a variety of different assumptions regarding the hopping rates and the random local fields. In some cases, analytic solutions for the spin relaxation rate were obtained. In all the models, we found that exponentially distributed energy disorder led to a drastic reduction in spin polarization losses that fell nonexponentially. Use of GNSS for surveying has made it possible to obtain accuracies of the order of 1 ppm or less in relative positioning mode depending on the software used for processing the data. However, the elevation obtained from GNSS measurement is relative to an ellipsoid, for example WGS84, and this renders the heights from GNSS very little practical value to those requiring orthometric heights.

During the summer of 1837 Christian Ludwig Gerling, a for- mer student of Carl Friedrich Gauß’s, organized the world wide first de- termination of the deflection of the vertical in longitude. From a mobile observatory at the Frauenberg near Marburg (Hesse) he measured the astronomical longitude difference between C.F. Gauß’s observatory at G¨ottingenand F.G.B. Nicolai's observatory at Mannheim within an er- ror of 000: 4. To achieve this precision he first used a series of light signals for synchronizing the observatory clocks and, second, he very carefully corrected for the varying reaction time of the observers. By comparing these astronomical results with the geodetic{determined longitude dif- ferences he had recently measured for the triangulation of Kurhessen, he was able to extract a combined value of the deflection of the vertical in longitude of G¨ottingenand Mannheim. His results closely agree with modern vertical deflection data. 1 Introduction The discussion about the figure of the earth and its determination was an open ques- tion for almost two thousand years, the sciences involved were geodesy, geography and astronomy. Without precise instruments the everyday experience suggested a flat, plane world, although ideas of a spherically shaped earth were known and ac- cepted even in the ancient world. Assuming that the easily observable daily motion of the stars is due to the rotation of the earth, the rotational axis can be used to define a celestial sphere; a coordinate system, where the stars' position is given by two angles.

The paper presents author’s view on spin-rooted properties of graphene supported by numerous experimental and calculation evidences. Correlation of odd pz electrons of the honeycomb lattice meets a strict demand “different orbitals for different spins”, which leads to spin polarization of electronic states, on the one hand, and generation of an impressive pool of local spins distributed over the lattice, on the other. These features characterize graphene as a peculiar semimetal with Dirac cone spectrum at particular points of Brillouin zone. However, spin-orbit coupling (SOC), though small but available, supplemented by dynamic SOC caused by electron correlation, transforms graphene-semimetal into graphene-topological insulator (TI). The consequent topological non-triviality and local spins are proposed to discuss such peculiar properties of graphene as high temperature ferromagnetism and outstanding chemical behavior. The connection of these new findings with difficulties met at attempting to convert graphene-TI into semiconductor one is discussed. Barnes1* and Ben Greenebaum2 1Department of Electricaland Computer Engineering, University of Colorado, Boulder, Colorado 2Department of Physics, University of Wisconsin-Parkside, Kenosha,Wisconsin It is proposed that radical concentrations can be modified by combinations of weak, steady and alternating magnetic fields that modify the population distribution of the nuclear and electronic spin state, the energy levels and the alignment of the magnetic moments of the components of the radical pairs. In low external magnetic fields, the electronic and nuclear angular momentum vectors are coupled by internal forces that outweigh the external fields’ interactions and are characterized in the Hamiltonian by the total quantum number F. Radical pairs form with their unpaired electrons in singlet (S) or triplet (T) states with respect to each other. At frequencies corresponding to the energy separation between the various states in the external magnetic fields, transitions can occur that change the populations of both electron and nuclear states. In addition, the coupling between the nuclei, nuclei and electrons, and Zeeman shifts in the electron and nuclear energy levels can lead to transitions with resonances spanning frequencies from a few Hertz into the megahertz region. For nuclear energy levels with narrow absorption line widths, this can lead to amplitude and frequency windows. Changes in the pair recombination rates can change radical concentrations and modify biological processes. The overall conclusion is that the application of magnetic fields at frequencies ranging from a few Hertz to microwaves at the absorption frequencies observed in electron and nuclear resonance spectroscopy for radicals can lead to changes in free radical concentrations and have the potential to lead to biologically significant changes.
