The undefeated son of Scat Daddy has dominated two consecutive fields, but the waters get deeper in his first try against graded stakes competition. With not much early speed signed on in this compact group of seven, it is likely that jockey Mike Smith will use Justify’s speed to gain an early advantage over his main rivals. If he does not take too much pressure early on, he will be very tough to catch late. #3 Bolt d’Oro has done very little wrong over his first five races for trainer Mick Ruis. The son of Medaglia d’Oro ran huge off the bench when placed first via disqualification in the Grade 2 San Felipe. I am slightly concerned that he will regress off of the arduous battle with McKinzie last month, but if not he should give Justify all he can handle in the lane. #1 Instilled Regard is the only Santa Anita Derby probable that has a legitimate chance of challenging the top two on the morning line. He proved he can compete with the top colts on the West Coast posting a 100 BRIS speed rating in the Grade 1 Los Alamitos Cash Call Futurity and backed that effort up with a win two-back in the Grade 3 Lecomte at Fair Grounds. I can forgive Instilled Regard’s fourth place effort as the 9-5-favorite in the Grade 2 Risen Star since he did quite a bit of traveling between California and New Orleans over a five-week span. He comes into the Santa Anita Derby fresh and should run a big one for trainer Jerry Hollendorfer. It is likely that Bolt d’Oro or Justify win on Saturday, but I do not think they have to run 1-2 to the wire. I will base my wagers around Instilled Regard running back a big one and splitting the top two with a solid late run.
