RELAY TEAM CHALLENGE

Athletes now have more incentive than ever to forge together units of two or three people and challenge XTERRA as a team in either the sport or championship race. The top three teams in each relay division will get invited to race for the national team championship at Lake Tahoe (Sept. 29), GU is giving away generous heaps of swag to participants, and entry fees were slashed dramatically for teams this year. This is the best way to get started in XTERRA, and the crew will XTERRA SPORT even help pair up individuals, so if you need a teammate to complete a relay squad, simply send an Swim, Ride and Run the same course as the pros, just half the e-mail to [email protected]. distance (750m swim, 16k mountain bike, 5k trail run). The Sport race is perfect for newcomers to the sport or those just looking for a more manageable adventure on race day. It will also serve as the featured event of the Ogden Off-Road Triathlon Corporate Cup - which will be awarded to the fastest relay team. The start time is 20 minutes after the championship race start and winners of both events are expected to arrive at about the same time (11:00-11:15) making for a dramatic finish line atmosphere.

THE MAIN EVENT

At the XTERRA Mountain Championship professional athletes vie for thousands in cash while amateurs race for points towards regional standings and spots into the XTERRA USA and World Championship races. Read on for information on how the series works, a course description, pro purse distribution, last year’s winners and more...

Championship Start: 9:00 a.m. on Saturday 11 THE COURSE AT SNOWBASIN The race venue at Snowbasin has seen world-class competition before as home to the downhill and super G races of the 2002 Winter Olympic events, but this time the competitors will be in the water, on mountain bikes, and in trail running shoes. It all starts with a 1.5K swim in the calm and clean Pineview Reservoir, a 10-minute drive outside of town and situated at about 4,500 feet above sea level. Swimmers will complete a two-lap course in what should be balmy, 65-degree water. At the first transition area, racers will hop on their mountain bikes to start a 30K ride to Snowbasin Resort. The ride trav- erses dirt trails as it meanders into Wheeler Canyon, a spectacular slot canyon shrouded in oak, aspen and pine trees. From there the trail opens into a field splattered with a colorful array of wildflowers. Competitors will climb about 1,800 feet on the way to the Snowbasin lodge area where spectators will have a chance to see the bikers as they pass through on their way up the mountain for another seven mile up-and-down loop before switching gear at T2 and heading out on an idyllic 10K trail run. The single-loop singletrack run course will zigzag its way through aspen groves and fields of wildflow- ers before finishing near the bottom of the Olympic downhill ski run. Transition set-up advice for competitors: Set-up your swim-to-bike transition first, then drive to Snowbasin, park and pre- pare your bike-to-run transition (a shuttle bus will transport you back to the start).

Saturday, Aug. 19, 2006 – A pair of Victoria, B.C. bred pros - Mike Vine and Melanie McQuaid - won their respect divisions in amazingly perfect weather with clear blue skies and temps in the mid-80's. It was an uphill battle for the entire field and nobody handled it better than Vine, who picked up his first win in what to this point has been an injury-and-mechanicals plagued season. His last victory was a year ago at the Mountain Champs in Keystone. "Was there any doubt?!" Vine jokingly exclaimed to a big crowd at the incredibly beautiful Snowbasin Resort as he received his $2,500 first place check and trophy. With her back against the wall in a must-win situation two-time XTERRA World Champion Melanie McQuaid nailed it. She led from near wire-to-wire as she overtook swim leader Janae Pritchett early in the bike, built a big lead and ulti- mately finished more than four minutes in front of rival Jamie Whitmore. The win set-up a true head-to-head battle for the XTERRA U.S. Pro Series title in Nevada (which McQuaid won).

Three races into the season; and while Conrad “the Caveman” Stoltz seems unbeatable, the women's race is anything but certain. The Pro Series counts the best 3 of the first 4 events + the finals at Lake Tahoe, NV. With Jamie Whitmore at 290 (two firsts and a second) and Melanie McQuaid at 280 (two seconds and a first) the 4th race has huge implications. If Jamie wins (and let’s assume Melanie comes in 2d) then she’ll be up 300 to 280 and could win the Series with a 3rd place finish in Tahoe even if Melanie wins there. Now, if Melanie wins then the two would be tied at 290 and go into Tahoe even. MELANIE McQUAID Either way, one of these two gals is going to gain some momentum going into the finals.

The next tier keeps the same tension. Candy Angle counts two thirds and a fourth and Jen Smith two fourths and a third - but Jen is coming off beating Candy at Richmond and Melanie at Crested Butte. There is something here that demands us to watch this women's race carefully.

Throw in Dara Marks Marino coming back after a nice 4th in Temecula in her very first XTERRA and we know she can ride as she posted the 2nd quickest bike. Sara Tarkington, a former U-23 triathlon US Champ, is making her first appearance in a major pro race after winning XTERRA Buffalo Creek and finishing 3rd behind Smith and McQuaid at the Crested Butte Bank point series race this year. She'll be playing at longer distances and against a strong pro field in Utah so we'll see if her solid JAMIE WHITMORE performances can continue. Shonny Vanlandingham makes her return to XTERRA earlier than ever and we all have seen what she can do at the World Champs (Best bike split in ‘05 and third-best last year) and wonder if she has been in the pool. She simply cannot afford to give up 7-8 minutes on the swim and win.

If we ignore the Caveman and his stunning dominance, we do have an excellent race behind him with Mike Vine, Josiah Middaugh, and Andrew Noble all within 26 points and a resurgent Seth Wealing coming off a brilliant 2nd at Richmond. The 2006 USA Champ may have a lot to say over the next two races. Noble has had a great season with the exception of Richmond where a mechanical dropped him from 3rd to 9th. Vine has a couple seconds and remember he won at Ogden last year, beating Stoltz. Middaugh is notorious for late season form and he lives at altitude and Ogden's 6,000+ feet won't bother him at all. And the way the points work, a mechanical for Stoltz could put any of MIKE VINE these 4 within striking distance at Tahoe. And let us not overlook Peter Reid in his first race out of retirement. He’s been practicing on the mountain bike and there’s no question about his endurance or his speed in the water or on the run.

The top 15 pros at each event are awarded points based on overall pro finish. Pros can drop one of their scores from the first four events, but must count the points they get (or don’t get) in Nevada. Thus, the final point total combines athletes best three scores in the first four races, plus the USA Championship race points. He/she with most points in the end is declared Series Champ. The U.S. Series will dish out $190,000 in prize money. $20,000 in Temecula, Pelham, Richmond, and Ogden, $40,000 in Nevada, plus $70,000 will be distributed to the top overall points scorers in the Series. TOBIN WEULE 34 XTERRA AMERICA TOUR SERIES The XTERRA America Tour is designed to provide age group athletes with a bona-fide championship to compete for within their geographic region. At the end of the regular season the top performers in each of eight regions are invited to compete against other athletes their same age - but from different regions - at the national championship in Nevada on September 30. This year there are 50 races in 32 states across the country, as well as the U.S. Territories of Guam and Saipan. It marks the 11th straight year of expansion for the sport of XTERRA.

Here's how the Series works: 1) There are eight regions, determined by a competitor's primary residence at the time of their first race:

NORTH EAST (NE) - Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Connecticut, New York. MID ATLANTIC (MA) - Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, Washington D.C. SOUTH EAST (SE) - Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Florida, Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands NORTH CENTRAL (NC) - Minnesota, Iowa, Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, Kentucky. SOUTH CENTRAL (SC) - Texas, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Kansas, Missouri, Louisiana, Mississippi, Arkansas. MOUNTAIN (MT) - Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Colorado, Utah, Wyoming. NORTH WEST (NW) - Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Alaska. SOUTH WEST (SW) - California, Nevada, Arizona, Hawaii, Guam, Northern Marianas Islands, Pacific Territories.

2) Age Group: "XTERRA Age" is based on a competitor's age on December 31, 2007. Athletes compete in the following age categories: 15-19, 20-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60+ (w), 60-64 (m), 65+ (m), and new for 2006 is the Challenged Athletes Division (which is not broken down by age group, simply gender).

3) Series competitors race for points at their choice of 50 events - including XTERRA Points Series (XPS) races & XTERRA Championship Series (XCS) races. Competitors are required to race and count points in at least one event in his/her region. Competitors can enter as many events as they'd like, however, they count just their best three finishes.

4) Points are awarded to the top 15 finishers in each age group at each race. If you race at more than one XTERRA Championship event, only the best finish counts at full points. Any other finishes earn points at the same rate as the XTERRA Points Series races. There are two points systems:

XTERRA Championship Series: 1st 2nd 3rd 4th 5th 6th 7th 8th 9th 10th 11th 12th 13th 14th 15th 100 90 82 75 69 63 58 53 49 45 41 37 34 31 28 XTERRA Points Series: 1st 2nd 3rd 4th 5th 6th 7th 8th 9th 10th 11th 12th 13th 14th 15th 75 67 61 56 51 47 43 39 36 33 30 27 25 23 21

5) The highest points scorers in each region are invited to compete for a national title at the XTERRA USA Championship in Nevada (qualifying spots based on chart below). The competitor with the most points in their age group in each XTERRA Region earns the title of XTERRA Regional Champion, and wins a custom racing jersey.

The inaugural XTERRA Winter World Championship will be held March 8-9, 2008 at Snowbasin Resort, with evening activities in downtown Ogden. The XTERRA Winter World Championship, which will be open to pro and amateur athletes, is a brand new multisport event that combines randonnee skiing, mountain biking, trail running and snowshoeing in an untraditional fashion. Other featured events for the weekend winter festival include the USSSA U.S. National Snowshoe Championships, XTERRA Randonnee race, XTERRA Dash-for-Cash snowboarding event, and activities geared towards children. "The XTERRA Winter World Championship and accompanying sports festival is destined to become a major winter attraction for Northern Utah," said Tom Kiely, CEO of TEAM Unlimited, the event's organizer. "The events are designed to be unique, fun and challenging. The locations at Snowbasin and Ogden are perfect not only because of their beauty, Olympic legacy, and great facilities, but also because the communities are so great to work with." TEAM Unlimited will produce a half-hour TV show highlighting the XTERRA Winter World Championship for distribution to ABC, NBC, CBS, FOX, major cable stations and resort networks throughout the country via national syndication as part of a marketing campaign that will generate significant exposure and economic impact for the state of Utah. "The XTERRA Winter Championship is another example of how we are using sports to help build the state's image and economy," said Jeff Robbins, president & CEO of the Utah Sports Commission. The XTERRA Winter World Championship is presented by the Utah Sports Commission, Greater Ogden Athletic Legacy Foundation, Snowbasin, Paul Mitchell, and XTERRA Gear. "The GOAL Foundation volunteers and sponsors are thrilled to support XTERRA's selection of our community for this major world winter sporting event. Weber County offers the perfect venue; from the breathtaking views and physically challenging terrain to the party in downtown Ogden, we are ready to welcome the world!" Said Kym Buttschardt, President of GOAL's Board of Directors. "The vision and partnership of the Utah Sports Commission, Team Unlimited, and Snowbasin guarantees a successful event for our community.” Snowbasin, a Sun Valley Resort, is well known as the home of the breathtaking and technically intimidating men's and women's downhill, super G and combined competitions for the 2002 Olympic Winter Games. Located in the spectacular Wasatch-Cache National Forest only 43 miles from downtown Salt Lake City and 17 miles from the adventure capital of Ogden, it is easy to access and has a wide and plentiful range of accommodations in nearby Ogden. On March 8, racers can expect plenty of snow and great temperatures. The USSSA Nationals are expected to attract several hundred qualified and recreational runners as the last stop in the 20+ race series that stretches across the nation. "We are extremely excited about this announcement as TEAM Unlimited has extensive event production experience and Snowbasin is an awesome site with amazing facilities," said Mark Elmore, the Sports Director for the USSSA. "We're look- ing forward to an outstanding National event that will bring unprecedented recognition and participation to snowshoeing." Other complementing endurance competitions include an XTERRA Snowboard Scramble (Dash for Cash), the XTERRA Randonnee open, showshoe events for all ages and experience, and a host of fun activities for kids.

FIRE & ICE ... XTERRA will give special recognition for the male and female - both pro and amateur - with the fastest combined times in the 2007 XTERRA World Championship in Maui and the 2008 XTERRA Winter World Championship in Utah. You can expect some stiff competition in both the men’s and women’s races as XTERRA racers are notorious for excelling in both hot and cold climates and under all kinds of grueling conditions.

41 THE XTERRA PLANET

At the finish line of the very first race in 1996 it was clear that XTERRA was going to be more than just a one-off event. There was passion in the eyes of the competitors and an unwavering feeling that XTERRA was destined to become a lifestyle…a movement. We believed. So much so we restructured the company to keep it growing. Look at where XTERRA is today…

- The first piece of expansion started with more races, a lot more. From one to 100+ in 16 countries in a 10-year span including a 50-stop America Tour for amateurs and a full-blown European Tour.

- We initiated a series of XTERRA Camps across the U.S. to help prepare athletes to race and get them started towards an active lifestyle. To that end, we offer up half-distance races for newcomers at our major events, plus the chance to race as part of a relay team. We also offer free XTERRA University clinics taught by our top pros.

- We dish out a half-million dollars in prize money to attract some of the world's leading multisport athletes and garner the attention of national and international media.

- We make champions. In the U.S. series alone we recognize 184 amateur regional champions and 22 amateur national champions, plus relay team national champions.

- We get kids involved wherever we go with the XTERRA Kids Zone. It's a free schedule of events with running and bike races, obstacle courses, and other fun games. The notion is to get kids outdoors and active.

- We put the lifestyle on display for millions to see with XTERRA TV. A dozen shows reaching into homes all over the world with inspiring images of fun activities in great places.

- We became consumer friendly. First with XTERRA Gear - equipment designed for rugged competition. Then, with races in more than a dozen countries and nearly every state in the U.S., we knew traveling was part of the game so we selected Travelocity to power XTERRA Travel on our website. We recently re-created XTERRAPlanet.com, which is soon to be a complete resource for any outdoor adventure.

- With the introduction of the XTERRA Foundation - we gave XTERRA heart. The XTERRA Foundation is a non-profit specifically designed to provide educational opportunities for at-risk kids.

- We've opened the doors for runners, not just multisport athletes, with the XTERRA Trail Run Series. This year there are more than 30 5k and 10k fun runs reaching into 18 major metropolitan cities in America - providing more chances to participate in the healthy, active, outdoors lifestyle.

- We took the XTERRA format into the snow with the creation of the XTERRA Winter World Championship to be held at Snowbasin Resort and Ogden, Utah on March 8-9, 2008.

- We launched the XTERRA Green Team to protect and preserve the areas we race in, and give back to the communities that host us.

- The movement is growing rapidly, and also includes events like the Nevada Passage adventure competition.
