Fitzgerald, SSND Approved by Mentor: __________________________________________________________ Name, Institution First Reader: _______________________________________________________ Name, Institution Second Reader: _____________________________________________________ Name, Institution Abstract The study was designed with a goal of generating a template for Lay Ecclesial Ministry Formation for Catholic School Administrators, which would have flexibility to adapt to cultural differences in various Catholic dioceses in the United States. The focus of the data gathering was the Baltimore Province, inclusive of the dioceses of: Arlington, Virginia; Baltimore, Maryland; Richmond, Virginia; Wheeling-Charleston, West Virginia; and Wilmington, Delaware. The need for such a template can be documented based on several recent studies by the Center for Applied Research in the Apostolate. These studies indicate that the personal perception of what it means to be Catholic is shifting. In many cases, people applying for administrative positions in Catholic schools today are less prepared in terms of knowledge of the faith, practice of the faith, and Catholic spirituality than those who came before them. To ascertain what the template for a formation program should look like, data was gathered to address three research questions: 1.Which statement more clearly reflects your understanding of lay ecclesial ministry? a. Lay ecclesial ministry is a privileged limited share in the ministry of the ordained. b. Lay ecclesial ministry is an intrinsic responsibility in the Church stemming from baptism. 2. How do our Lay Ecclesial Ministry Formation Programs provide a solid, on-going support for continued growth in human, intellectual, spiritual, theological, faith and moral development? How are participants properly prepared to apply this development specifically to the practicalities of leadership in Catholic education? 3. What needs to occur to ensure that our ecclesial catechesis of the baptismal commission effectively assists us in recruiting Spirit-filled enthusiastic candidates for positions in Catholic school leadership? How do we best market our programs in Lay Ecclesial Ministry Formation for Leadership in Catholic schools? What type of leadership succession plan do we put in place to pave the way for the Catholic schools of the next decade or next century? Portier, Ph.D. Yves Congar’s theology of the laity and ministries is unified on the basis of his adaptation of Christ’s triplex munera to the laity and his specification of ministry as one aspect of the laity’s participation in Christ’s triplex munera. The seminal insight of Congar’s adaptation of the triplex munera is illumined by situating his work within his historical and ecclesiological context. The U.S. reception of Congar’s work on the laity and ministries, however, evinces that Congar’s principle insight has received a mixed reception by Catholic theologians in the United States due to their own historical context as well as their specific constructive theological concerns over the laity’s secularity, or the priority given to lay ministry over the notion of a laity.

    The United States Conference of Secular Institutes The Mountaineer August 2019 Volume 12, Issue 2 Dear Friends, Heart Speaks to Heart. This is the theme of our coming annual national meeting, obviously inspired by divine providence. Just a few days after our executive committee had chosen this theme, it was announced that Pope Francis had approved the canonization of John Henry Cardinal Newman. The cardinal’s motto was: Cor ad cor loquitor, that is, “heart speaks to heart.” Now the canonization date has been set for just a month after our national meeting; it will take place in Rome on October 13, 2019. One can almost feel the breeze of the Holy Spirit as he swishes by with his wisdom. Such “coincidences” are messages from God that we want to take seriously, so let us meditate a bit on the truth that one heart speaks to another heart. This is a beautiful definition of prayer, that deep connection between God and the human heart, sometimes a unity that needs no words. Once in a while we might be graced by the prayer of just relax- ing in the presence of the loving Father, feeling a bond that expresses the reality that we belong together, Crea- tor and creature, Parent and child, Mercy and misery. The smaller cannot exist without the greater. Our consecrated life can also be described as “heart speaks to heart.” When the Lord Inside this issue: called you to be his very own in a special, exclusive way, that was his heart speaking to your heart. Usually such a calling grows slowly, almost unperceptively, just as love grows between a man and woman called to marriage.
