hybrid heritage Yoruba Heritage as Project Reauthenticating the Osun Grove in Osogbo, Nigeria Peter Probst n July 2008 I attended the birthday party of the Aus- trian artist Susanne Wenger in Osogbo, Nigeria. It all photos by the author except where was Wenger’s ninety-third birthday and, as it turned otherwise indicated out, her last. In January 2009 she passed away (Probst 2009). It was a private family event. Practically all the guests were either adopted children or members of Wenger’s New Sacred Art Group. Before the cutting of the birth- Iday cake each one of the guests stood up and gave a short speech praising the jubilee and her achievements. The style and topics of the speeches varied. While some eulogized the importance of Wenger’s deeds for their own personal life, others acclaimed her active participation in Osogbo’s ritual life and her relentless efforts to preserve the grove of Osogbo’s guardian deity Osun through the erection of new images. Still others took a more statesmanlike stance and stressed Wenger’s contribution to the reputation of Osogbo as Nigeria’s center of art and heritage. As I listened to these speeches I found myself recalling the time I first visited Osogbo, in 2000. I had come to Nigeria to look into the question of what ever happened to the “Osogbo art school.” In the 1960s the label stood for an exciting though also contested center of modern—then still contemporary—African art. In the 1970s and 1980s Osogbo’s fame faded. The name grad- ually disappeared in the art historical references. -

DOI: https://doi.org/10.33281/JTHS20129.2017.2.2 Abstract One religious tourism destination site of note in Southwestern Nigeria is the Osun Osogbo sacred grove and shrine located along the banks of the Osun River within the city of Oshogbo, Osun State, Nigeria. The sacred grove and shrine were inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2005. This paper examines the routes and trails people take to get to Osun Osogbo sacred grove and shrine to ascertain the mode of transportation to the destination site as well as the factors mitigating against the sacred grove. The study uses ethnographic methods to elicit information from respondents and data collected were analyzed descriptively. The paper argues that Osun Osogbo sacred grove and shrine can improve the living standard of the host community and create job opportunities if its access routes and trails are improved upon by the government. Like the Greeko-Roman Empire, tradtional Africa had so many gods and goddesses that they deified in sacred places (Ikoro and Ekevere 2016). These gods and goddesses had temples where altars were engraved for prayers and sacrifices, which are often referred to as shrines. -

May her gentle soul rest in peace. ii Thesis statement The Yoruba oral tradition, according to which the original ancestors of the Yoruba originated from the “East,” was popular in Yorubaland during the early 19th century. Before the period 1846 to 1901, the East was popularly perceived by the Yoruba as Arabia, Mecca or Saudi Arabia. Samuel Johnson (1846-1901) mentioned that Mohammed Belo (1781-1837) was among the first Africans to write that the East meant Arabia, Mecca or Saudi Arabia. He contested the views of associating the East with a Muslim land or a Muslim origin. In contrast to these views, Johnson believed that the East actually meant Egypt. This thesis presents research into Samuel Johnson’s contribution towards the development of the tradition of Egyptian origins of the Yoruba. -

3 Ogun in Precolonial Yorubaland A Comparative Analysis Clerical intellectuals like Samuel Johnson prided themselves on being the con- structors of a more nearly unified concept of Yoruba society and culture,1 includ- ing something that they called “Yoruba heathenism.”2 Yet they were well aware of the variety that stood in the way of this task, since their very activity as evangelists introduced them to religious practices in dozens of communities across a large swath of Yorubaland, and their detailed reports necessarily document it. In this chapter my aim is to use this evidence in a deconstructionist spirit, suggesting that the sheer extent of regional diversity in Yoruba religious practice calls into question whether we should be speaking of Yoruba religion as a single entity at all. We have to deconstruct Yoruba religion if we are to see it as an entity with a history rather than (as most of the literature presents it) as a pantheon of deities with unchanging, even eternal attributes, as first manifest in the archetypal setting of primordial Ile-Ife. Ogun, the Yoruba god of iron and war, makes an excellent subject for this purpose, since his cult is spread all over Yorubaland, placing him clearly in the quite small number of truly pan-Yoruba orisa. In this task, compari- son will play a key role, in two dimensions: between the manifestation of Ogun in different areas/locations and between the functional attributes of Ogun and other orisa. What will emerge is a view of Yoruba traditional reli- gion as less a single pantheon of deities with fixed attributes in relation to one another, spread evenly across the whole country, than a spectrum of varying cult complexes, each one the product of a unique set of local and historical circumstances.
