BIO ERIKA ALEXANDER Has the Kind of Life Story That Seems Like It Could Only Happen in the Movies ERIKA ALEXANDER - BIO ERIKA ALEXANDER has the kind of life story that seems like it could only happen in the movies. The child of two orphans, Erika grew up in the mountains of Arizona. Her father was an itinerant preacher who kept the family moving. Then an amazing series of "discoveries" by a who's who of film, theater and television propelled her into a remarkable career. Famed producers Merchant and Ivory "discovered" her in a basement theater in Philadelphia and cast her as the lead in their film, My Little Girl. She was then "discovered" by theater legend Peter Brook for his epic Royal Shakespeare Company production, The Mahabharata, in which she created the role of "Madri/Hidimbi" and toured the world. Public Theater founder Joseph Papp "discovered" Erika and cast her in his last play, The Forbidden City. As if this weren't enough, TV icon Bill Cosby then "discovered" Erika, and created the role of "Cousin Pam" for her on The Cosby Show. Erika starred for five years as fan favorite "Maxine Shaw" in the hit series Living Single, winning two NAACP awards for Best Actress in a Comedy. She also won critical raves as parole officer-on-the-edge "Dee Mulhern" in Showtime's original series Street Time. Erika's recent film work has been equally distinguished. She co-starred opposite Denzel Washington in Tony Scott's Deja Vu for Touchstone Pictures and in director Steven Soderbergh's independent feature, Full Frontal with Julia Roberts and Brad Pitt. She has been an indie film standout in such Sundance favorites as 30 Years to Life and Love Liza, which starred Philip Seymour Hoffman and Kathy Bates. On stage, Erika has starred in six plays at New York's Public Theater, most recently garnering accolades in The Story opposite Tony-winner Phylicia Rashad. The New York Times called her work "a nervy, spot-on performance." Another highlight was her appearance in the Public's Shakespeare in the Park production of The Taming of the Shrew. Erika was a national surrogate for Hillary Clinton in her 2008 presidential campaign, and a 2008 William J. Clinton Foundation delegate to Africa. She is also an activist/advocate for at-risk youth and for women and girls, speaking around the country and raising money on their behalf. She is married to painter and screenwriter Tony Puryear. Erika recurs on the hit USA drama series In Plain Sight and she stars in the new film La Mission with Benjamin Bratt. La Mission premieres in LA and NYC on April 9th, 2010..

ABTRACT AFRICANA WOMEN'S STUDIES WILBURN, SHENETHA L. B.A. HAMPTON UNIVERSITY, 1997 DECONSTRUCTION OF STEREOTYPES AND MEDIATED MESSAGES IN AFRICAN-AMERICAN SITCOMS Advisor: Dr. Josephine Bradley Thesis dated May, 2002 This study examines the images of African Americans in black-themed sitcoms and mediated messages presented here. The study was based on the premise that the images of African Americans on television sitcoms are one dimensional and comedic. A content analysis approach was used to analyze various television sitcoms. Definitions were used to determine what type of image existed using the foundation provided by Donald Bogle and Stewart Hall. The researcher found that although many of the African-American-themed sitcoms investigated represented traditional stereotypical images, there were mediated messages in these sitcoms, which offered a new and different perspective on African Americans. This suggests that African-American images on black-themed sitcoms are moving forward. Additionally, the researcher found that sitcoms depicting African-American life from a comedic point-of-view seem to be more acceptable in popular culture than those which depict life from a dramatic and/or realistic point-of-view. Continuing its tradition of championing the discovery of emerging voices and celebrating new work from established talent, the 19th edition of the Festival foregrounds comedic, music-centered, political and socially-conscious films from diverse storytellers who use art to inspire positive change and community restoration. The 2020 Tribeca Film Festival will run April 15-26. The features program will include 115 films from 124 filmmakers from across 33 different countries. The line-up includes 95 world premieres, 2 international premieres, 4 North American premieres, 4 U.S. premieres, and 9 New York premieres and one sneak preview. This year's program includes 19 directors returning to Tribeca with their latest projects, and 44 of the feature films have one or more women directors. The feature program was curated from 3,385 submissions, and this year’s Festival received a record 10,397 total submissions across all categories. “First comes the story, then empathy, then comes change. When you change the narrator, you empower different voices to show audiences new worlds through their eyes,” said Paula Weinstein, Chief Content Officer of Tribeca Enterprises and program advisor. “We are privileged to have so many new and rich worlds brought to life by visionary storytellers. We hope audiences leave the Festival deeply touched, moved, and entertained.” “This year’s festival embraces the unique power of film to bring people together -- whether that’s literally the communal experience of watching a film in a packed theater, or the more intangible way a great film can make you empathize with a stranger’s struggle,” said Cara Cusumano, Festival Director.

  • How the Image of the Female Hip-Hop Journalist Brought the ’Hood to Mainstream America
How the Image of the Female Hip-Hop Journalist Brought the ’Hood to Mainstream America By Kimberly Wynne “Just throw your hands in the air/ And wave ’em like you just don’t care/And if you’re ready to party/ On the count of three/ Everybody say ‘Oh yeah,’” commands the performer. “Oh yeah,” replies a screaming crowd of nameless faces. This scene is typical of any hip-hop concert—an overcrowded, smoke-filled room filled with screaming fans, a sweaty performer writhing to a pulsating beat, and members of his entourage belting out song lyrics and commands for an audience to follow. While this scene may excite the average person, for a hip-hop journalist, this is work. The life of a hip-hop journalist seems glamorous. In popular culture, it is portrayed as endless nights of club-hopping, schmoozing with rappers and big-name celebrities, and doing interviews in stretch limousines while drinking bottles of expensive champagne. But this isn’t so, especially for a female hip-hop journalist. In the TV series Living Single which aired from 1993 to 1998 and in the movie Brown Sugar which debuted in movie theaters in 2002, the image of the female hip-hop journalist is turned upside down. Her nights are spent alone, pining away for an unavailable, male best friend who only sees her as his “sister.” To gain credibility in the male-dominated industry of hip-hop, the female reporters trade in their femininity for baseball caps, baggy jeans, and sneakers. They are the constant subject of sexual The Female Hip-Hop Journalist Wynne 2 advances and male chauvinism—a chauvinism that women in hip-hop call standard in a musical genre where women are objectified and treated as shiny, new accessories to be hung like jewelry from a performer’s neck.

Erika Alexander’s Official Testimony for House Committee on the Judiciary Chairman Jerrold Nadler Hearing: Diversity in America: The Representation of People of Color in the Media Thursday, September 24, 2020 Thank you for the opportunity to address this committee about one of the most important discussions in America today, “diversity in the entertainment industry and the ways people inside and outside the industry can and have worked to address this issue.” ● I’ve been a card carrying union member and a professional in show business for 37 years, so I’m uniquely qualified to have this discussion. ● I’ll also talk about the core tenet that guides my life and progress: that “Representation Matters” and that the impact that one character can have on the lives and psychology of today’s viewers is tremendous. ● I’ll address the “big picture.” ● And, like Deep Throat, I’ll tell you to follow the money. Now, I’m a girl from Flagstaff, Arizona. My mother was a teacher. My father was an itinerant preacher. They were both orphans. They had six kids. We lived in the Starlite hotel’s two-bedroom shack, off Route 66. So of course, I expected to testify before congress. ;) But seriously folks, perhaps some of you know me from my television work on The Cosby Show as Cousin Pam or as Maxine Shaw on Living Single. Maybe you know me from Oscar-winning film Get Out, or Wutang: An American Saga. I am a two-time, NAACP Best Actress winner. I’ve traveled with The Royal Shakespeare Company and done six plays at the Public Theater in New York City.
