Worship Schedule Rethinking the Megillah in the Year of #Me Too Kollel, Jewish Texts, Parsha ~~~~~ Family Shabbat 2

What makes this year’s Megillah reading different than others? The Book of Camp Scholarships Esther hasn’t changed, but the way we think about it is due for a major overhaul. From Directory Correcons this year forward, our reading of the story of Purim will forever be informed by the From The President 3 painful realies of the Me Too campaign. The Miss Persia pageant, the beauty contest through which Esther becomes Temple Seder TAI on Rye queen1, has lost even more of its luster. Our Purim schpiels (skits, parodies) typically play Upcoming Meengs 4 this scene for laughs. Somehow it just doesn’t seem to be “all in good fun” or innocent joking anymore. Looking at women only for their looks is a terrible way to look at them. Preschool News It’s demeaning, degrading and dehumanizing. What these “contests” do to parcipants Religious School News 5 and observers alike is to promote noons of body image that are unhealthy, unsafe and unnecessary. As the father of a teenage daughter coming of age in the era of “size zero,” Purim Carnival I’m deeply concerned about unrealisc and unwelcome designaons that make it seem JFB News 6 as if women need to starve themselves into looking aracve. Forgive me for a personal confession as a heterosexual male, married for more than 20 years: Real men like Community Purim Celebraon Caregiver Support women with real bodies. And real bodies are inextricably linked to real thoughts, Tot Shabbat 7 feelings, needs and desires. We shouldn’t excise the beauty contest from the Book of Esther or malign its Yahrzeits 8 protagonist for parcipang. It doesn’t appear that she had much of a choice. We might ask ourselves how much choice today’s contestants have, for that maer. What we One Book Jewish Lex should do is to take this opportunity, this Me Too moment, to emphasize the courage of Max Young to Israel 9 the other heroine of the Purim story, Queen Vash. When Vash is ordered to dance before the king’s friends wearing a royal diadem2 (presumably only the royal diadem as Contribuons 10 in the pop song “You Can Leave Your Hat On3” of “Full Monty4” fame), she refuses to do Ads 11 so. She chooses deance and dignity over submission and self‐abasement. Pressured to be a “plaything” reduced to breasts and buocks, she demands to be treated as “esh 5 Informaon Back Page and blood, just like [a] man. ” Like far too many women today who have been punished for speaking out, Vash pays a terrible price for her refusal to be treated like a sex toy. Ways to Help the We can honor her courage, and the voices of the Me Too movement, by protecng those Temple Insert who speak out from retaliaon and holding the perpetrators of indecent behavior responsible for their acons.
