Elliott David Campbell Porter Ethnic and Status Identity in Qing China: The Hanjun Eight Banners Abstract This dissertation is focused on the Hanjun, the ethnically Han component of the Qing dynasty’s Eight Banner System. The liminal status of the Hanjun – part of the banner system, which was closely associated with a Manchu ruling house, and yet marked as ethnically Han – makes their history a valuable window into Qing ideas about identity. This dissertation traces how the Qing court managed the Hanjun over the course of the dynasty, finding that though Han ethnicity was central to official conceptions of Hanjun identity, it was secondary to their status identity as banner people prior to the 1750s. Though scholarship on the banners often describes them as a fundamentally Manchu organization that served to reinforce a shared Manchu ethnic identity, careful study of the Hanjun reveals that for much of the Qing the banners were an inherently multiethnic institution. Banner people, I argue, constituted a “service elite,” like the samurai of Edo Japan or dvorianstvo of imperial Russia, a common early modern technology of rule that used legal privilege to maintain the loyalty of a large hereditary class of soldiers and administrators. My advisor, Mark Elliott, has been an essential part of my research and writing. From the conceptualization of my project through to the final revisions of the dissertation, he has helped me develop my ideas and refine my arguments, identifying weaknesses, answering questions, and pointing me toward valuable source material. During my archival work in Beijing, when I encountered documents that I couldn’t quite make sense of, he was quick to respond with what he knew. Though he has disagreed with substantial portions of my argument, and I imagine that there remains much with which he disagrees, he has nonetheless encouraged me to keep pushing forward. And though this work challenges some of what he argues in The Manchu Way, without his book and his knowledge, my dissertation would never have been possible. Manchus: A Horse of a Different Color by Hannah Knight Abstract: The question of identity has been one of the biggest questions addressed to humanity. Whether in terms of a country, a group or an individual, the exact definition is almost as difficult to answer as to what constitutes a group. The Manchus, an ethnic group in China, also faced this dilemma. It was an issue that lasted throughout their entire time as rulers of the Qing Dynasty (1644- 1911) and thereafter. Though the guidelines and group characteristics changed throughout that period one aspect remained clear: they did not sinicize with the Chinese Culture. At the beginning of their rule, the Manchus implemented changes that would transform the appearance of China, bringing it closer to the identity that the world recognizes today. In the course of examining three time periods, 1644, 1911, and the 1930’s, this paper looks at the significant events of the period, the changing aspects, and the Manchus and the Qing Imperial Court’s relations with their greater Han Chinese subjects.

By the time the British crushed the Chinese navy in the so-called Opium Wars, the country and its government were in a state of shock and incapable of quickly catching-up with Western Europe. In contrast with such a narrative, this dissertation shows that the Great Qing was in fact far more aware of global trends than has been commonly assumed. Against the backdrop of the long eighteenth century, the author explores the fundamental historical notions of the Chinese maritime world as a conceptual divide between an inner and an outer sea, whereby administrators, merchants, and intellectuals paid close and intense attention to coastal seawaters. Drawing on archival sources from China, Japan, Korea, Vietnam, and the West, the author argues that the connection between the Great Qing and the maritime world was complex and sophisticated.

Xiaoli Jiang Department of History and Culture, Jilin Normal University, Siping 136000, China; [email protected] Received: 26 October 2018; Accepted: 4 December 2018; Published: 5 December 2018 Abstract: The Imperially Commissioned Manchu Rites for Sacrifices to the Spirits and to Heaven (Manzhou jishen jitian dianli), the only canon on shamanism compiled under the auspices of the Qing dynasty, has attracted considerable attention from a number of scholars. One view that is held by a vast majority of these scholars is that the promulgation of the Manchu Rites by the Qing court helped standardize shamanic rituals, which resulted in a decline of wild ritual practiced then and brought about a similarity of domestic rituals. However, an in-depth analysis of the textual context of the Manchu Rites, as well as a close inspection of its various editions reveal that the Qing court had no intention to formalize shamanism and did not enforce the Manchu Rites nationwide. In fact, the decline of the Manchu wild ritual can be traced to the preconquest period, while the domestic ritual had been formed before the Manchu Rites was prepared and were not unified even at the end of the Qing dynasty. With regard to the ritual differences among the various Manchu clans, the Qing rulers took a more benign view and it was unnecessary to standardize them. The incorporation of the Chinese version of the Manchu Rites into Siku quanshu demonstrates the Qing court’s struggles to promote its cultural status and legitimize its rule of China.

    ]NòϥΩƕ εȖͼɠó HƧDζgͼȖζñʇ! 95 Law based on Local Customs: Law and Local Order under the Yuan Dynasty through the Example of Marriage Customs and Matrimonial Law Hung, Li-chu* Abstract Law under the Yuan dynasty is most commonly characterized as a system with legal provisions that were formulated based on local customs. Due to this view, much of the scholarship to date has focused on non-Han customs, such as levirate marriage. However, it is much less common to study what Han custom actually meant and how it developed. This study analyzes the historical background and development of Yuan marriage laws, and focuses on the competition and negotiation between Confucian norms and local customs under the said principle of formulating legal provisions based on local customs. Examining these issues help to correct the notion that Yuan law was lax and minimally restrictive. Institutionally the judicial power of Yuan local officials was quite limited, and for a long time they did not have legal codes to adhere to. Therefore they reported numerous trivial civil conflicts to government agencies for resolution, including the Central Secretariat (zhongshu sheng), Bureau of Military Affairs (shumi yuan), the Censorate (yushi tai), and the Six Ministries. The Yuan central government expected to make marriage certificates (hunshu) contractual.
