Univ.-Prof.Dr. Margarete Rubik (Professor Emerita) ABSTRACT Die vorliegende Dissertation beschäftigt sich mit der Analyse von Romanen, die von australischen Aboriginal Autoren verfasst wurden, und die Darstellung von Aboriginals und deren Situation in Australien am Ende des 20ten und Anfang des 21ten Jahrhundert. Diese Analyse hofft dadurch, auf die problematische und unfaire Situation aufmerksam zu machen, in der sich die indigene Bevölkerung Australiens befindet. Die Studie betrachtet politische Linien und deren Auswirkung auf die indigene Bevölkerung Australiens im historischen Kontext, in dem sie in den Werken vorkommen. Zu diesem Zweck wurden relevante politische Geschehnisse recherchiert und mit Bezug auf die Romane interpretiert. Es wurden Werke von erfolgreichen Aboriginal Autoren ausgewählt, die in ihren Romanen deutlich auf die problematische Situation ihrer Bevölkerungsgruppe hinweisen, und gleichzeitig eine bedeutende Rolle für die positive Identifizierung von Aboriginal Lesern mit den Charakteren in diesen Romanen spielen. Die Darstellung von positiven Vorbildern für die indigene Bevölkerung ist von großer Wichtigkeit, da das öffentliche Bild von Aboriginals großteils verzerrt ist, und daher wenig fördernd für ein positives Selbstbild der indigenen Bevölkerung ist. Alle ausgewählten Aboriginal Autoren haben einen Universtätsabschluss, und sind sich ihrer Verantwortung für ihre Gemeinschaft und für die Aufrechterhaltung ihrer Kultur bewusst. Die Romane wurden thematisch gruppiert, und deren Analyse fand unter Miteinbeziehung von politischen Gegebenheiten im Kontext statt. Diese Studie zeigt deutliche Misstände auf, die das Leben von australischen indigenen Bevölkerung erschweren. Weiters weist sie darauf hin, dass aufgrund von rassistischen Einstellungen der australischen Bevölkerung gegenüber ihren indigenen Mitbürgern großer Handlungsbedarf besteht, diese von Vorurteilen geprägten Einstellungen zu revidieren, um den Weg in eine gemeinsame Zukunft, die die Gleichstellung der indigenen Bevölkerung und gleichzeitig eine Anerkennung und Wertschätzung der Kultur der Aboriginals garantiert, zu ebnen. 1 Table of Contents 1.     The Working-Class Experience in Contemporary Australian Poetry A thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Sarah Attfield BCA (Hons) University of Technology, Sydney August 2007 i Acknowledgements Before the conventional thanking of individuals who have assisted in the writing of this thesis, I want to acknowledge my class background. Completing a PhD is not the usual path for someone who has grown up in public housing and experienced childhood as a welfare dependent. The majority of my cohort from Chingford Hall Estate did not complete school beyond Year 10. As far as I am aware, I am the only one among my Estate peers to have a degree and definitely the only one to have attempted a PhD. Having a tertiary education has set me apart from my peers in many ways, and I no longer live on the Estate (although my mother and old neighbours are still there). But when I go back to visit, my old friends and neighbours are interested in my education and they congratulate me on my achievements. When I explain that I’m writing about people like them – about stories they can relate to, they are pleased. The fact that I can discuss my research with my family, old school friends and neighbours is really important. If they couldn’t understand my work there would be little reason for me to continue. My life has been shaped by my class. It has affected my education, my opportunities and my outlook on life. I don’t look back at the hardship with a fuzzy sense of nostalgia, and I will be forever angry at the class system that held so many of us back, but I am proud of my working-class family, friends and neighbourhood.

    Disputed Territories as Sites of Possibility: Kim Scott's Writing and the Wirlomin Noongar Language and Stories Project Natalie Quinlivan BA International Studies, BA Communications (Creative Writing), MA English A thesis submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences School of Literature, Art and Media University of Sydney April 2019 Abstract Kim Scott was the first Aboriginal author to win the Miles Franklin Literary Award in 2000 for Benang, an award he won again in 2011 for That Deadman Dance. Yet despite these national accolades, Scott interrogates the very categories of Australian and Indigenous literatures to which his work is subjected. His writing reimagines, incorporates and challenges colonial ways of thinking about people and place. This thesis reveals the provocative proposal running through Scott’s collected works and projects that contemporary Australian society (and literature) should be grafted onto regional Aboriginal languages and stories as a way to express a national sense of “who we are and what we might be”. Scott’s vision of a truly postcolonial Australia and literature is articulated through his collected writings which form a network of social, historical, political and personal narratives. This thesis traces how Scott’s writing and the Wirlomin Noongar Language and Stories Project (Wirlomin Project) reconfigure colonial power relationships in the disputed territories of place, language, history, identity and the globalised world of literature. Ultimately, Scott intends to create an empowered Noongar position in cross-cultural exchange and does so by disrupting the fixed categories inherent in these territories; territories constructed during the colonising and nationalising of Australia.

    A Sociology of the Chick Lit of Anita Heiss By Fiannuala Morgan Submitted in total fulfillment of the requirements of Master of Arts (Thesis only) School of Culture and Communication, University of Melbourne 1 Abstract Wiradjuri woman, Anita Heiss, is arguably one of the first Australian authors of popular fiction. Since 2007, she has published across a diversity of genres including chick lit, contemporary women’s fiction, romance, memoir and children’s literature. A focus on the political characterises her work; and her identity as an author is both supplemented and complemented by her roles as an academic, activist and public intellectual. Heiss has discussed genre as a means of targeting specific audiences that may be less engaged with Indigenous affairs, and positions her novels as educative but not didactic. There remains, however, some ambivalence about the significance of the role that genre plays in her literature as well as for the diverse and differentiated audience that she attracts. The aims of this thesis then are two-fold: firstly, to present a complication of academic conceptions of genre, then to use this discussion to explore the social significance of Heiss’ literature. My focus is Heiss’ first four chick lit novels: Not Meeting Mr Right (2007), Avoiding Mr Right (2008), Manhattan Dreaming (2010) and Paris Dreaming (2011). Scholarship in the field leans toward an understanding that the racial politics of non-white articulations of the chick lit genre are invariably incompatible with the basic formula of chick lit texts. My thesis proposes a methodological shift from the dominant mode of ideological analysis to one that is largely focused on reader response.

    humanities Article Dry Country, Wet City: A World-Ecological Reading of Drought in Thea Astley’s Drylands Ashley Cahillane Discipline of English, National University of Ireland, Galway, Ireland; [email protected] Received: 6 January 2020; Accepted: 16 July 2020; Published: 11 August 2020 Abstract: Using a postcolonial and world-ecological framework, this article analyses the representation of water as an energy source in Thea Astley’s last and most critically acclaimed novel Drylands (1999). As environmental historians have argued, the colonial, and later capitalist, settlement of Australia, particularly the arid interior, was dependent on securing freshwater sources—a historical process that showed little regard for ecological impact or water justice until recent times. Drylands’ engagement with this history will be considered in relation to Michael Cathcart’s concept of ‘water dreaming’ (2010): the way in which water became reimagined after colonization to signify the prospect of economic growth and the consolidation of settler belonging. Drylands self-consciously incorporates predominant modes of ‘water dreaming’ into its narrative, yet resists reducing water to a passive resource. This happens on the level of both content and form: while its theme of drought-induced migration is critical of the past, present, and future social and ecological effects of the reckless extraction of freshwater, its nonlinear plot and hybrid form as a montage of short stories work to undermine the dominant anthropocentric colonial narratives that underline technocratic water cultivation. The fantasy of whiteness refers to the habitually enacted and environmentally entrenched assumption that white people can and should superintend the cultural representation of Otherness. This argument is presented in three parts. Part One examines the complex ways in which white anxieties and concerns were expressed through discourses of blackness in nineteenth-century American blackface entertainment. Part Two examines the various transnational discursive connections enabled by American and Australian blackface entertainments in Australia during the nineteenth century. Part Three examines the legacy of nineteenth-century blackface entertainment in twentieth-century Australian culture. Overall, this dissertation investigates some of the fragmentary histories and stories about Otherness that coalesce within Australian culture. This examination suggests that representations of Aboriginality in Australian culture are influenced and manipulated by whiteness in ways that seek to entrench and protect white cultural authority. Even today, a phantasmal whiteness is often present within cultural representations of Aboriginality.

    Ethics of Representation and Self-Reflexivity: Nicolas Rothwell’s Narrative Essays STEPHANE CORDIER UNIVERSITY OF WOLLONGONG Australian literature has been preoccupied, perhaps even obsessed, with representations of place and space. What started as a nationalising enterprise, an attempt to artificially cement place-making by substituting landscape for unknown space (Bennett 21), slowly gave rise to texts that interrogate settler colonial culture through spatial contestations. Yet, as Laurie Clancy argued in 1993, literary forms have proven resistant to decolonisation: ‘in the last two decades the self-conscious preoccupation with landscape among Australian fiction writers has become . debilitating and even self-destructive’ (49). The 1988 Bicentenary could be seen as a turning point in Australian history and culture. The array of festivities around the event may be interpreted as an orchestration of reified forms of settler-belonging to counter a rising intellectual opposition to a monolithic conceptualisation of history, art and culture; a last- ditch political effort from centric forms of power to re-assert traditional forms of belonging in the settler imaginary. But the Bicentenary also coincided with non-Indigenous Australian writers beginning to inscribe unbelonging at the heart of their fictions and non-fictions.1 Spatial crises, non-belonging and unbelonging are, increasingly, features of contemporary Australian literature, as demonstrated in the works of Michele de Kretser, Richard Flanagan, Ross Gibson, Christos Tsiolkas or Tim Winton (Cordier, ‘Intimate Immensities’). Non- Indigenous authors who grapple with settler identity in the twenty-first century are also in search of ethical literary forms that reflect a necessary erosion of settler dominance, privilege or class.
