38 THURSDAY 17TH AUGUST: ROWING: Off Newell’s Slipway A full and wonderful day of rowing … from dinghy races to canoe & paddleboard races to the single/ mixed/randan races in the beautiful skiffs. Rowing in the latter (solo, doubles, randan) is amazing fun... but it is TOUGH. The coxes do a great job of yelling encouragement & tactics... and rowers are never quite sure if ‘NEARLY THERE’ really means ‘nearly there’ but it certainly makes us put in the extra effort, determined (desperate) to be greeted at the line with a 1st, 2nd or 3rd ‘gun’!

All day long, the tireless, cheerful, hardworking Regatta team continue their marvellous work on the sea front & behind the scenes... selling programmes/raffle tickets or on race officer duty. There is then of course the truly excellent commentating by Richard Bowtell... whose enthusiastic, informative commentary keeps us fully updated! The great selection of stalls along the High Street/sea front certainly offer something for everyone. THE RESCUE RACE: Off Newell’s Slipway SO... The final ‘race’ of the day is one NEVER to be missed – one of the most entertaining events to look forward to. Be prepared to witness clashing of oars, capsizes & general hilarity – whilst up to 30 dinghies are launched by ‘gentlemen’ aiming to ‘rescue’ their female partners who dive in from out at sea (seemingly miles away...!) & swim towards (in theory!) their team mates, clamber on board (not easy!) & row back to shore. The WINNER being the first to kiss the President!

But that’s not all... there is then the Prize Giving... and FIREWORKS!
