SUMMER ADVENTURE Troop 200 and Crew 200, chartered by Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Lafayette, performed a joint trek this summer to New Mexico and Colorado. Six youth and four adults completed a Cavalcade horseback trek and Gymkhana competition at in NM, then camped two nights at the US Air Force Academy and while in Colorado Springs toured both Headquarters AF Space Command and HQ US Northern Command, as well as summited Pikes Peak (14,110 feet elevation). The trek capstone was watching the Colorado Rockies trounce the Chicago Cubs at Coors Field before flying home.

The hike up Pikes Peak entitled several members to join the prestigious Colorado Fourteener Club, Denver Area Council, BSA. Requirements include making a round trip hike of no less than 2,500 feet elevation gain to the summit and back of any of the fifty-four (54) 14 thousand foot peaks in CO.

The Gymkhana -- the patch for which is amongst the most rare at Philmont -- came at the end of the horseback trek, and participants competed against another Cavalcade crew in such events as barrel racing, flag relay, and steer penning. The combined T200/C200 team won the latter two events and, in fact, performed the steer penning exercise PERFECTLY -- the only time this summer any of the 28 Cavalcade crews from across the country was able to do so.

The Cavalcade trek was arduous, yet most enjoyable, and included one 18-mile day on horseback from Beaubien to Clark’s Fork. Most other days were of length eight to 12 miles, and started out VERY early in order to get the horses rounded up, fed, saddled, and on the trail by 7am. The crew became quite adept at teamwork by assembling and disassembling the pack horses each day. The daily routine required them to perform the diamond hitch and other tricks of the trail in order to timely get to the next encampment and participate in the programs, such as roping, fly-tying, burro racing, shotgun shooting and shell loading, and many other new and exciting opportunities.

All-in-all it was a GREAT 12-day trip and a terrific bargain at approximately $1,000 per person. Troop and Crew 200 HIGHLY recommend the Philmont Cavalcade to any unit lucky enough to be selected!
