The sources involved here are Welsh and other Celtic tradition, Latin texts, French romances and other works from the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, Malory’s and Tennyson’s representation of the Queen, and finally Guinevere in the twentieth century in Bradley’s and Miles’s novels as well as in movies. The main sources in the first three chapters are of European origins; however, there is a focus on French and British works. There is a lack of study of German sources, which could bring different insights into the character of Guinevere. The purpose of this essay is to analyze the evolution of Queen Guinevere and to point out that through the works of Malory and Tennyson, she has been misrepresented and there is more to her than her adulterous relation with Lancelot. This essay is exclusively focused on Queen Guinevere and her analysis involves other characters like Arthur, Lancelot, Merlin, Enide, and more. First the Queen is only represented as Arthur’s unfaithful wife, and her abduction is narrated. We have here the basis of her character. Chrétien de Troyes develops this basic character into a woman of important values about love and chivalry.

King Arthur remains a hero of legend in the annals of the British Isles. However, one question remains: did King Arthur actually exist? Early medieval historical sources provide clues that have identified various figures that may have been the template for King Arthur. Such candidates such as the second century Roman general Lucius Artorius Castus, the fifth century Breton leader Riothamus, and the sixth century British leader Ambrosius Aurelianus hold high esteem as possible candidates for the historical King Arthur. Through the analysis of original sources and authors such as the Easter Annals, Nennius, Bede, Gildas, and the Annales Cambriae, parallels can be established which connect these historical figures to aspects of the Arthur of literary tradition.

  • Mordred's Rebellion Against Arthur And
“Do thou thy warste, and I defyghe the!”: Mordred’s Rebellion Against Arthur and Malory in Le Morte Darthur Anna Mayersohn Haverford College English Department Advisor: Maud McInerney April 6th 2017 Mayersohn 2 When Thomas Malory undertook to write a comprehensive English account of the legend of King Arthur, the task before him was by no means simply to copy, translate, and integrate the sources available to him. His sources indeed laid out the frame of the story, but they varied so greatly in form, tone, and factual details that it was up to Malory to decide what story to tell. Helen Cooper situates Le Morte Darthur in the fifteenth century’s trend away from metrical romances, which favorted “reunion, reconciliation, the due succession of father by heir,” towards prose romances that commonly featured “[t]reachery and murder within the body politic or the kin group, the slaying of father by son, the failure to pass on good rule in a strong and righteous order of succession, and sometimes also incest” (819, 820). The new prevalence of such elements (all of which appear in Le Morte Darthur) suggests “that their authors found a new literary form in which to express a more realistic and bleaker view of the world they lived” (821). The precedent established by his sources only partly explains why Malory’s work fits this pattern so well; the rest is Malory’s own doing. Comparing Le Morte Darthur to its sources reveals that Malory’s work was not mechanical but required engaging with the legend from his own perspective and making choices about how to tell it.

  • The Mordred Resurrection
THE MORDRED RESURRECTION The Mordred Resurrection is a work of fiction. Set around the Isle of Wedmore, characters and specific houses are not intended to be real. © Michael Malaghan 2013 Chapter One “The Rising” Spring half term, 2014 ‘This place’d be all right if it didn’t rain all the time,’ Nick Latham complained to his sister as they trudged down the sodden lane. The heavy blanket of rain seemed to have been constant ever since the pair of them had arrived at their Aunt Calista’s, whom Callie was named after, two days ago. The fields on either side of them were rapidly turning into lakes, ash and hazel trees forming small islands in the watery landscape. Mallard ducks, mute swans and moorhens were swimming where apparently just a week ago cows had been grazing. Callie flicked her dark ponytail forward over her shoulder so that the rainwater would stop running down the back of her neck. Neither she nor Nick had thought to bring any serious waterproof gear to Somerset. Not so long ago they had been scorching in Egypt, while their archaeologist parents had worked on a find of ancient Egyptian ruins; now it appeared to be monsoon season in Somerset! ‘Aunt Calista reckons this is the most flooding there’s been for hundreds of years – when all those mounds round here, what do they call them, Tors, were real islands.’ ‘Probably why a lot of them are still called isle,’ commented Callie, jumping over a large puddle, ‘like the Isle of Avalon and the Isle of Wedmore.’ Nick was no longer bothering to avoid the puddles.
